The brief flickers seen in the B-roll is from a now dead 5m DP cable, not the monitor itself, which was fine with our lab DP cable. Thought we missed them all in the edit but a few got through. We actually swapped DP cables half way through and it was fine for the second half of our shots. Make sure you use a good quality DP cable with this monitor
There has been a few times we've tried to organize review units but it's fallen through the last few attempts
DisplayPort is a special creature. Combinations of cards, cables and monitors can even hang systems.
Yep. 5 meter cables are actually out of spec, which is why we don't use them for testing
@SonnieSlim From what I understand, use short ones as much as possible
Nah not really unfortunately. Very hard to tell which cables are good and which are bad. We've cycled through a few brands and settled on Alogic 3m cables which are reliable enough
Exactly the review I was looking for, very informative. Thank you.
Omg yes. I've been waiting for this review for soooo long. Thanks!
Thanks for the detailed review! I bought a 27GL850 last year. Great monitor. I'm tempted to buy this as a second monitor.
Great video again Tim. One issue I did see is a brief flicker on the monitor when watching some moving images. 1:36, 2:14, 2:35 are the times I saw it. I don't know if this is just my monitor but this would definitely put me off this new monitor.
I've been looking forward to this
Me as well!
My powers have doubled since the last time we met, count.
Good... Twice the pride, double the fall.
@@kaznika6584 I was about to say that
Same.
Great review. I had an accident with my 34GK950F and picked up this one for the replacement. Happy to get a better product for about the same price I paid for the 34GK950F.
Yes been waiting for this review! Cheers
Realllly looking forward to the LG 27GN950 Review. 😉
Why always 27 inch though? 27 is far too tiny for 4K to get you a real benefit, you should always go for 32 inch in 16:9 at least.
@@Jousten16 Not even close. If you sit at the standard 20-24" away from your monitor, you can still easily see the pixels on a 4K screen. I wish we had 27" 5K monitors like Macs do so that we could have that razor-sharp, crystal-clear "retina" clarity where everything looks pristine like it does on your smartphone.
I was originally thinking of getting the 38wn95c, but then saw the 34gn850b (which had totally gone under my radar). But it looked like a good fit for my preferences. Still waiting on the back order, but very glad that critics like Hardware Unboxed have confirmed that the key features are as I was hoping.
only recently discovered this channel but i love your style of reviewing and you just convinced me to get this monitor. Will be arriving tomorrow if all goes well :)
Finally you do your vid on this one. I already know its gonna be a banger.
Got this one in yesterday! Really incredible monitor, nice to see it was a great buy :)
Do you have any experience with the 34GK950F screen that he discussed at the beginning of the video? I had that model until the screen got cracked :(. How do you like the performance of this monitor? Are you getting the 160Hz on any games? One game I am looking forward to trying to get 160 at is Rocket League. I am running a RTX 2080ti with an AMD 3950x on 32gb of ram. Does the HDR feature work at all on this one? I know it doesn't have dimming so it's not TRUE HDR, but the 34GK950F pulled it off decently.
Got this since day 1. Loving it.
Thank you very much for this review. After watching it, I just ordered one for myself on amazon. I am so excited I can't lie. Can't for it to arrive.
So how is it?
ty for this video, i am looking for 21:9 monitor for like 2 months and this one looks like a winner
Are you going to test the Lg 27gn950? that would be awesome.
Almost got the 38GL950 but the $1800 price tag was just too much. Went with this one instead and it’s so amazing. Had it for like a month and I love it so much. Definitely the best monitor I’ve ever owned.
I'm so glad the shop was out of stock of the gk950f when I got the gn850 3 months ago. Such a beauty!
Big thanks for this review! I was waiting for this, because I already have order this monitor for myself xD now I fully convince that it was a good idea to pick up this model ;) cheers ;)
Thank you so much for yet another excellent monitor review, you do them the best.
Would you review the AlienWare AW3420DW ?
Got this monitor after your review, absolutely loving it!
Do you find 34 inch to be too narrow ? Or is it perfect ? Mine is in the mail now ! :D
Phenorius Nice! And personally I find it perfect, great for both gaming and a bit of productivity
@@replicant_2049 that's what I find too! I absolutely love it
Thanks for the review!
you guys have the best monitor reviews, i keep up the great work!
Love the breakdown Tim. Monitors are such a jungle with all the BS marketing out there and claims on response times. I am really happy there is at least one reputable reviewer doing very thorough breakdown of the real performance we are getting!
You're not wrong there the monitor im currently using (BenqEX3501r) got rave reviews all round and personally I'm not to happy with it so much so that im thinking of upgrading it after spending £600 on it only last year.
I've had the Asus pg279q for 5 years and never had an issue. It has been the best IPS monitor I have owned until now. I wanted to get into ultrawide gaming and per Hardware Unboxed review of the AOC CU34G2X as a great budget buy for ultra wide monitors I picked one up. It is a very good monitor. I was amazed as it was my first Ultra wide monitor and first VA, as the deeper blacks and nice contrast were new to me. But coming from IPS I could not un see the smearing and slight, slight ghosting. I really wanted to love it and keep it as again , it is a very good monitor at a $500 price point at 144hz.
I spent 10 hours or so throughout last week adjusting every setting to try to clear up the smearing. All my research pointed to the fact you just can't with VA panels . 2 days ago I exchanged the AOC for this monitor. I am extremely happy with it. Nanocell ips is miles above my Asus Pg279q. The clarity and colors left me in awe. Yes, there is some ips glow on some darker scenes in games but nothing i can't ignore because the trade off is worth it. Buttery smooth gameplay and high FPS with all settings on ultra paired with my 3070 in all my games i tested. (Ac Valhalla, RDR2, Gta 5, many others). I didn't really want to buck up an extra $500, but as PC gaming being my main source of home entertainment I wanted the best most Immersive experience. I can tell already the $500 extra was absolutely worth it. Again, i'm only 2 days in, no issues yet so time will tell but so far iIm extremely happy. Thanks for pointing me to this monitor Hardware Unboxed!
update on monitor? Looking at this monitor, the one you mentioned and the Huawei Mateview GT.
@@willday8880 It's still absolutely amazing. I love everything about this monitor. In my opinion its a perfect sized ultrawide and exactly what I needed. I switched jobs and didn't have time to play for a few weeks. I played again for the first night and I was blown away again at the picture and smoothness. I still think its considered one of the best ultrawides to date. Get one!!! You won't be disappointed.
@@vpRiggsdo you know if the monitor has flicker free technology and any kind of blue light filter?
I have the pg279q still, brilliant montior but looking to upgrade, kept looking at the Samsung g8 oled but I'm worried about the burn in. Very happy with the ips panel of the pg279q so started looking at this model. Any regrets? Definitely an upgrade to the Asus?
Excellent review. No gimmicks or super annoying overreactions like some other channels who just beg few view. Thank you for this comprehensive test and results, based on this i will buy this monitor.
Thank you for mentioning the curve R rate. and Great Review (all things considered) Well done!
I'd been waiting for reviews of the GN series for a while, but went ahead and bought the 38GN850 when it dropped by £200 (for a short while). It was between this and the G9, but the curve on it was just too aggressive for my liking. No regrets with my purchase, but still looking forward to your review if it's coming.
Where did you buy it from it’s out of stock in so many places
finally, have been waiting for the test for a long time ...now i just need another one with the 38GN950 in comparison to the 38WN95C - which is almost the same Monitor on paper (except for the TB3 Port)
Yesss I'd love to upgrade my AW3418DW to one of those and the 38WN95C seems more appealing due to TB3.
Awesome. Detailed. Helpful. Thank you.
One of the best technical reviews. Well done!
I have had this monitor for about 5 months and to be honest it's the best monitor I've ever own til now. Thanks Hardware for the deep review and recommendation. Two thumbs up 👍👍 ( Halo infinite, Microsoft Flight simulator, Rainbow six siege, Star Citizen, Apex ) games i play.
I have been waiting for this one, thanks so much! I bought a 34gk950f in the meantime, secondhand for $625. I doubt it's worth upgrading, but it's an amazing monitor nonetheless!!
Ah nice! I bought that a month ago. Over the moon with it
I just ordered it at my local online and retail store(the biggest in my country and city ). Tomorrow evening time it will arrive OMG so quick , can't' wait for it !
Got this 34GN850 right when it was available in the US. After owning several other 34" both VA and IPS, this LG Nano IPS is INCREDIBLE! By far my favorite model yet.
how is it the ips glow? expecially compared to the other VA panel you owned. I have just got a 34GN750 today and it sucks on blacks and the resolution is very shitty...even fonts are almost unreadable from a close angle of view. Thanks in advance for the answer.
@@spectre.x - on par with the newest Alienware 34". So really pretty good. Very minimal ips glow which I am usually very sensitive to. Its case by case though. I may have gotten incredibly lucky or they could all be like mine I couldn't tell you that
Would you say this is better than the Alienware monitor
@@Kasadev I prefer the extra brightness from the LG but build quality on the Alienware is far superior. Toss up really.
How does it compare to the VA's you've had? Looking at getting a new monitor but dont do any super color sensitive work. Is the contrast worth it on the VA or do you still prefer IPS?
Thank you for excellent review! Had this monitor since spring. Most of the criticism is true, I would also add that the port position makes it extremely uncomfortable to plug-unplug cables. But I don't think that you can get an ultrawide IPS monitor which is better than this one. Sure you can get older LG models at cheaper prices and Predators are comparable, but all of them have trade-offs, so it is up to you to pick which ones you can live with.
I have one of these monitors coming this week. It's going top replace my 34GK950F screen that is now showing those pretty rainbow lines through it after a screen gets cracked (me heart sank when it happened lol). How do you like the performance of this monitor? Are you getting the 160Hz on any games? One game I am looking forward to trying to get 160 at is Rocket League. I am running a RTX 2080ti with an AMD 3950x on 32gb of ram.
@@johnlockwood6006 I just picked up the LG Ultragear 34GP83A-B, which is basically the same monitor. According to HWinfo, the monitor was produced in week 1 0f 2022.
The one issue I have is that 160 hz uses 8 bit color with dithering. At 144 hz you maintain 10 bit. I decided to keep it there as I don't see the OC a major difference at just 16 extra hz.
Edit: I am coming from an Acer XR341CK. Major difference.
You helped me alot thanks for your video!!!
I have this monitor and it’s been nothing short from amazing both for work and gaming.
Had this monitor for about a month now, yet I've been waiting for hardware unboxed to confirm that I have made the right decision 😁
Hahah me too! Well i first got the AW 34 but the guy from microcenter told that I was going to regret it lol and i Did. I came back to return it and get this one instead without knowing how good it was. When i see the color on COD I was amazed!
Lol
@@renealbertoreyesgonzalez9604 good decision, I had the Asus pg348q(basically the same panel as the Alienware) before this one and I'm actually surprised at how quick this display is. I'm a heap of garbage on COD so i didnt notice a huge difference but on Apex and Tarkov, flawless!
That makes two of us 😂. Well ive had mine since release.
Are you having those flickers like 1:35 ?
I've ordered this monitor and there was barely any reviews about it. I was watching like pls say it's good 😅
I have bought one based on this review and i am loving it. Keep up the good work Tim.
Awesome - thanks for the review - just ordered my unit - gotta wait a little while for it though!
Did you get your unit yet? If so, how do you like? I have mine coming this week after my 34GK950F met a cracked screen fate :(
@@johnlockwood6006 Not yet, keep getting backorder messages even after more than a month :(
@@hj-redravenheng3822 Sorry man. I ordered mine from BestBuy.com and got in a couple days. It's a solid screen for sure!
youtube subtitles got it correctly? thats can only be a dream!
can u do a review of the alienware aw3420dw? theres a rumor that this monitor has a minor problem with moving content.
should be the same panel as the 950´s nano ips panels
Thank you for the info!
Great review.. hopefully we see a review for the 38gn950 or 38wn95c
Great video. Can you also do the 27GN950 4K display? Thx
Seconded. Upgrading my PC soon and want to go 4K. The 27GN950 looks real nice on paper.
3840x2160@144 is still a bad choice, even a 2080TI can only drive 80hz/fps in the more demanding games at something close to ultra settings. You are effectively trading too much resolution for performance, hence the smart money still goes on "balanced" 1440P formats. Maybe with the next generations of GPU later this year the situation will change and native "4K" will finally become worth doing, but I would still choose 21:9 1440P formats all day.
Battleneter I am planning to keep this monitor for the next 7-10 years. I am sure 4K will make sense for most of that period
Went from an Acer X34 to this one and wow, the brighness and refreshrate are really nice. Didn't really think it would be such a difference
I am still using the X34 and have contemplated replacing it but also now looking at the Alienware OLED
Awesome review, as always Tim :P
Love these reviews!
Great video! Are you going to review the LG 38WN95C as well? That seems to be the ideal monitor for working at home by day and gaming by night.
It’s out of stock everywhere still. Do you think it’s that much better ?
@@lukewilliams7020 I definitely think so, from an esthetic as well as complete package perspective (ports, capabilities) it seems to be the perfect monitor for me. And as compared to the 34GN850, height does make a difference!
I'm looking forward to this as well. Always liked the idea of the 38GL950 but thought it had too much of a "halo product" and RGB tax to it. The WN seems more in line with the performance bump of the panel without that gamer fluff, and with the added bonus of an ambient light sensor.
@@Nickersont88 Totally agree!
@@Nickersont88 what do you mean halo product
since when does the automatic caption actually say hardware unboxed this is scaring me
It usually does so with Tim only because he says it slower and clearer than Steve does

Waiting for a RE-SUPPLY now to get mine...
I really want a cool '20%' patch for my jacket. 😉

Very nice review! 👏 thanks!
Great stuff !!!
Please review the Legion Y27q-20 !
I just got this in 2023.... lol. To be fair, @ $700, this is still a VERY good with pixel response IPS display. Next step in ultrawide is Oled and spending 1200+ on AW UW is hard to justify for me, and is just over my limit.
Anyways, the contrast on nano IPS panels are horrible! I had a dell S2721DGF that I returned because I could not get over the contrast. The HDR setting actually made the monitor worse because the unit just could not get bright enough, even though they both have the same 400 certification! No remedy to the really poor details in those darker scenes, at least for me. Ended up getting the M27Q at the time, sacrificed raw IPS speed, for OK speed and better contrast. It was worth it at the time, prior to getting my Ultrawide.
Moving on to the 34GN850, the contrast and pixel response is a little better than the dell, but the monitor can seemingly get WAY brighter in HDR mode, and that is a game changer. You combine the higher HDR brightness of this nano IPS panel vs dell, then combine it with AMD Software tweaks such as: VIVID Gaming - Enabled (Most important), then tune Contrast, Brightness, and saturation sliders to your liking, and all of the sudden, you are in a different tier of monitor, seemingly. All those hard to see areas are gone, and on top of that, everything else is popping off like crazy. You can set system defaults and have games look good across the same setting, or take a step further and tune all those sliders to specific games. You can get this thing looking closer to a HDR 600 display than you think.
Does anyone know if Nvidia has a similar setting to the Vivid gaming option in AMD? Basically, HDR combined with vivid gaming is the best for me, so if Nvidia doesn't have an option like that, its just not going to be as good. Simply moving the previously mentioned sliders does not seem to achieve the same result.
BTW, immersion level vs a good 1440p is next level and worth it. I had a 24 inch TN and mained a 27 inch IPS, but this is better. All the screen split options windows supports is pretty amazing and easy to use and my desk is way better looking with only 1 nice display. I am currently powered by an RX 6800 (not XT) and its honestly "enough", but I'm going to stick a 6950 into it and call it a day.
Me: I want this Monitor
My Wallet: Think again fool 😂
My LG27GL850 is on the way and now i want this one
gettin mine on friday, freakin stoked :D
GN? GN Steve cameo missed opportunity. Cheers m8. Great reviews.
I watched this review and almost bought this monitor.. then i found the LG UltraGear 34GP83A.. it's essentially the same exact panel, same specs, same featureset.. for $200 less. The only differences appears to be a new LG Logo on the back and it only comes with one cable. Saved $200 and still got the same amazing gaming experience as the GN850.
Why the hell are they same price now lol. The GP is actually more expensive
@@ispikemike and now the gp is 669 on amazon prime day, just picked it up
ive just read on ebuyerthe gp can be "overclocked" to 180hz as apposed to 160hz on the gn
@@MankySwift My GP model only supports 160hz overclock.. native is 144hz. You may be able to manually OC it more tho but I never tried.
Upgraded from a 100hz msi ultrawide and I have been very pleased with this one!
I just ordered myself an LG 34GP83A-B which is just a rebrand of this monitor for only $799 USD. They're literally the same thing lol, only difference is you don't get the same amount of cables in the box. I'm gonna calibrate to the settings you suggested and see how it looks. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for this great review! I'm looking for a new monitor because my lg 34gk950f died last week. The panel on that model is very fragile. The screen had a crack in it after I carefully wiped it clean with a special cloth. I have done this for years with other monitors and never had a problem. I was wondering if it's the same with this model, does it have the same panel? Or did they improve the overall build quality?
Great question. Did you get any responses or info on this? I have this model coming this week after my 34GK950F met a crack screen. I am not even sure how it happened to be honest, but I know it didn't take much to cause the issue. Been waiting 3 days now to see what LG says the repair is going to cost. Most of the time it costs almost as much as a new monitor. It's unreal there are no accident protection plans worth a shit for these things.
@@johnlockwood6006 haven't got a response yet, but decided to buy the gn850. It's an awesome monitor, and so far no problems with it. The overall build quality is excellent! I recommend cleaning it with a special cloth without applying too much pressure. The stand of the gn850 causes the display to come a bit more forward on your desk. But that can be fixed by swapping it with the one of the gk950f, it has the same fit. I also noticed that the monitor "joystick" menu is even more advanced than the one on the gk950f.
I own this monitor. It's the first ultrawide I ever purchased, and man am I glad I did!
just odered my first gaming rig so im also on the look out for an ultrawide no regrets then?
i love mine so much. best monitor i have ever used by a long run.
This is a beautiful review. No words.
It's insane how well Hardware Unboxed puts together these reviews.
its literally their job if you got 40 hours a week to do this then it better be done right
Damn Nano IPS and it's nano contrast ratio! This would be practically the perfect gaming display with >1200:1...
Agree. You either get black smearing and often buggy VAs or you get IPS with gray blacks. So stupid. Phone screens and especially tvs are better than these monitors.
Thanks for the content...can you please create a video on all the best LG ultrawide 1440p gaming monitors...
I've got this monitor and recent versions (34GN850-B) are freesync and gsync compatible, its what made me upgrade from my asus pg348q that I had for over 4 years. Only spent $500 to upgrade which was nice.
is it still a good buy in 2022?
This needs to be compared to the 34gp83a which is over 200$ cheaper and uses the same panel, at least according the the label on the panel inside these monitors. It seems to be the perfect mid range ultrawide in 2021 and competes with the mpg341cqr
Great work as usual.
Great video as usual. Y don't u guys ever review benq zowie monitors. Xl2546 seems to be a good option
Nice! When is the review for LG 38GN950 coming out?
may 2020..
I got the 38 and apart from the (obvious) resolution and size differences, there is HDR 600 support but with only 8 dimming zones, so nice for trying HDR, but not the best for HDR consumption.
I do like the extra pixels in height, the extra physical space is quite nice for productivity. But I wonder if the "odd" resolution may result in poorer support in games (Death Stranding does have 3440x1440, but no 3840x1600), which is already not so great for ultra wides.
I just ordered one of these to pair with my 3080, both should be coming this week. I'm about to bust
Tj W got a 3090 on the way. Tempted to order the 38gl950g version of this to upgrade from my X34P
Omar Beydoun agree with you for the most part man, I do. I just love screen real estate. Plus having some higher FPS would be nice. Pixel density doesn’t really increase, I know. But the improved colours etc is a big appeal to me aswell and overall panel quality.
Omar Beydoun not to mention the 38 panel is only a tiny bit taller/higher than the 34. Most of the size gained is horizontally
Alyx Vance my whole PC is expensive AF. May aswell get another monitor to match

This is my first UW and i love it!
This will be my 3rd. I had an LG 60 Hz a couple years ago. Sold it to upgrade to the 34GK950F which just this past week had an accident and got it's screen cracked. It was either buy another ones of those, or pay a simple $100 more for this one. I do production work like video editing and audio recording for bands, as well as game in my free time. Once you got UW, you just can't go back. Especially for production stuff. I went from seeing 12 audio tracks in my audio software to seeing 32. It's a blessing ha.

@@DavidC1 Yes, probably this one is better to test. I wanna buy a 38 inch one and i am looking at the two LG models (38GN950-B and 38WN95C-W) and the Alienware one. It would be great if they can test them.
1:37 Screen Flicker at 160Hz
1:39 "My unit had no issues"
Edit: Also occurs at 2:14 to 2:15 as pointed out by FullSpeedToKiiliMaar
Probably a one off but thought is worth pointing out as the 34gk950f had alot of users with similar problems, though the problem can often boil down to the cable and I found using a Club3D Vesa certified cable resolved this for me over 2 previous supposedly 1.4 capable cabes.
Would like to see you review the 38GN950-B that looks awesome and would like your thoughts on it's HDR ablity since its 600 instead. And the 4K 27 144Hz looks interesting :)

Great screen ive had it about 2 Months now. Runs iRacing and f12020 just 👌
Even today, one year later, in terms of IPS and ultra-wide screen, this seems like the best value monitor with these specs, not even the G7/G9s don't come close IMO, mostly because those are VA and cost tons more! If I didn't the money for a G9/G9 Neo, I'd certainly save up and go for this one asap, which is what I plan to do.
Just ordered for under 800 on amazon. I had went with the dell S3422DWG, but it already has vertical dead pixels after less than 30 days.
just picked one up for 500 on ebay with less than 900 hours on it ebay is the place to be.
I just returned my neo g9.. if you do go for it know that hdr doesn’t work well, you’ll see horizontal lines across screen, it has pretty bad blooming still even with its mini led tech.. and for me it had multiple dead pixels and stuck pixels. It is big so it’s hard to notice but it is there and I see a lot of reviews from other people with the same problems. So packaging is big obviously so it’s a pain to return.. if you really want the super ultra wide be ready to play panel lottery with this one you should probably get the regular g9 i hear it’s a bit better in quality control but still.
The newer version is out now, the 34GP950G-B. I've been waiting for HU to review it for a long time, I hope they do.
@@TheUnkindness Seems like the HDR is a bit better, and has higher refresh. The contrast isn't really improved, due to the nature of IPS tech, and the price is comparatively high due to it being new.
Any chance for a review of the 34" Xiaomi Mi Surface Display
my thought also
They already reviewed a Nixeus monitor which uses the exact same panel

Hello Hardware Unboxed Crew. This is a great monitor but I have to ask. When are y'all planning on reviewing the new OMEN 27I? Because I have a feeling it will be a big competition against the old LG 27GL850.
Sitting here with my nice newish Pixio Prime 27" yet still will happily sit and watch Tims monitor reviews.
With all due respect, I as a person who uses IPS would rather skimp on resolution - Aspect Ratio - Refresh rate and not use a VA.
