Waaay back in episode 5 of The Game Collection I reviewed LandStalker, an awesome Action RPG for the, get this, Sega Genesis. It's been a long time since I reviewed a game for the Genesis. Maybe I should revisit that console...
But why would I talk about LandStalker in a review of Alundra? Because put simply, Alundra is LandStalker 2. Or something like that. It's complicated.

Had no idea this had anything to do with LandStalker, great video as always!
Thanks, Dr. Unksnes! :D
The most underrated and I´d almost say the best game on PSX.. Everything about this game from the OST to the story to the gameplay is amazing. Also great video, very high quality stuff!
Chillhop Music Chillhop music here? Wow!
I turned on my PSX and put in Alundra. I love the game.
The psx isn't a ps one lmfao. The psx is a ps2
@@DakinRinone no.... it isnt.
I had a lot of fun playing this game back in the late 90s its truly an underrated classic.
Thank you for the awesome review of Alundra, one of my all time favorites and a game that definitely deserves far more attention!
Great to see you again Derek! Thanks for adding another game to my list. I just picked up and complete Lunar Silver Star Story box set, along with Saiyuki: Journey West! Keep it up!!
My dad bought me this game when I was a kid. Wonderful memories with this title for me.
Loved the concept of Alundra. Going into peoples dreams, beating up the nightmares, while exploring a world in an action RPG / zelda esque way.
Oh finally. A game so dear to me. Great review as always. Glad you liked it. :)
Great video Bro! just caught up on all your reviews, keep up the good work!
Nice video! Very informative with the history section, I just finished playing Dual Hearts and wanted to learn more about Matrix.
Don't know how I've never heard of this game before, it looks amazing, will defiantly check it out. Thanks for the review!
quality review as usual! keep em coming
Hey Derek, I just stumbled upon your channel while searching for JRPGs for my new PS1 and I gotta say that you're legit as hell. Keep up the good work, seriously! Subbed.
I've been aware of Alundra in some form ever since it first cropped up in 90s game magazines.
I had absolutely ZERO idea it was basically a spiritual successor to Landstalker.
So now I have to play Alundra. Thanks :D
SAME!!!!!! What a shock to hear now!
Dude I always wanted to play this as a kid. Definitely gonna have to buy it sometime, good review!
Papa Bear if you have a smartphone download happy chick emulator on google and you can play it completely free on your phone
Or it's 5 bucks on PSN if you have a PS3 or Vita and don't mind paying a little.
@@RagnarokMic this is a reason why i hate sony/playstation to make such a game a shitty console exclusive. fuck them, consoles where always crap since sega genesis/super nintendo.
fuck outdated hardware bs
One of my favorite games of all-time! Awesome job.
The idea of diving into people's dreams is intriguing alone, but then you mention how they use silence and moving music to make you connect with the characters too. I like the way you describe games without too much detail, just giving a general idea of the most important points of it. I also enjoy how the game looks and how the character moves. Working Designs always made great games, i have yet to play a game of theirs i didn't like.
I always look forward to your reviews, Derek. Well-spoken and informative, as always! Keep up the great work! :D
alundra is awesome one of favorite games in childhood and still now
Alundra is so good, i love it. At the time, it always competed with Symphony of the Night as my favorite PS1 game. It's been a long time since i've touched SotN but Alundra still finds its way onto my TV now and then, it's just a solid game all around. I actually got into Landstalker because of Alundra, which then made me get all the other Landstalker-related games like Lady Stalker (even though I have no idea what's going on in it), Time Stalkers and Dark Savior. All because of Alundra.
I'm playing through this again right now. You said it all at the beginning; it truly is awesome. This is one of my favourite games for the Playstation. I haven't played nearly as many RPG's as you though, so I've got some catching up to do. Terranigma looks a good bet for my next game as it seems somewhat similar to Alundra (I like the action over turn-based these days, though many of my favourite games do revolve around the latter -- but a lack of patience for them these days make them more of an effort to play again).
this game was hard to complete, not because the enemies and bosses, it was because the dungeon riddles
its more along the lines that gaming of today has become too easy and obvious in most RPGs the puzzle solving is not as difficult as it used to be so when someone plays an old classic title the puzzles in RPG games are always going to tend to be much harder and more challenging. Besides the hard part isnt the puzzles its the last 3 bosses of the game xD
nah. im playing the game right now. and the depth perception is kinda fucked. still playable. but you will make alot of errors simply due to the weird depth perception.
still a fun game tho and its fun to see how much i actually remember
Surely was one of the hardest games I've played as a kid. My young mind was unable to comprehend the riddles of this game at the time. I'll have to come back to it to see if an older mind can make sense of it now.
lol the game is easy
Man, i love this "Crt style" (Like you do in the video to show the gameplay) and for playing 2D games (And some others Classics 3d too), if you play these games in the emulator you have a bunch of configurations to make the Full HD graphics, effects, shaders, bombs, meteors, magic, rasengans, hadoukens and something, but in my opinion, Scanlines with no shaders/Texture Filter make this game WONDERFUL to me, seems like i'm playing on real console with a Good TV. (I miss the old times)
Just my opinion, Alundra is amazing, i'll try Alundra 2 too.
Amazing video, keep it work man!
Hearing that smooth, confident voice of yours never gets dull, Derek! Alundra is a masterpiece for sure and it'll only get more and more popular thru out time!
I have never played Land Stalker(but have played the original Shining Force), but you know what I played that looks very similar to it? Equinox for SNES! The dungeon crawling, the cool world map, the ambient yet sometimes intense music that makes you feel like your almost there, and the wicked, wicked enemies and bosses! I think you would enjoy that title if you decide to play it someday!
Great Games Collection episode, keep being super, Derek!
Thanks for the review! Just doing some last minute shopping before PSN kicks the bucket this summer. I’ll give Alundra a try!
People complained about the difficulty of this game but it was one of the reasons I liked this game so much.
You failed to mention the many disc art and art insert variants. There's like 8 disc arts and 5 or 6 art insert variants!
Great review of my favourite game of all time. Thanks!
This was and still is a classic on the Playstation. I remember seeing this at a friends house back when it first came out and I bought one for myself. I still have it to this day. It's definitley challenging, thats for sure and I notcied that most of the games published by Workign Designs for the Playstation were challenging. The tone and music for this game match perfectly. It does remind me a bit of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, in that you have an overworld that has areas that are accessible only if you have certain items, you have lots of hidden treasures, and also each of these games has a central town, with other houses scattered throughout.
The dual camera production quality!
Totally forgotten this fabulous game! Thanks for the reviews u do!
Funny you mention Camalot, I thought it had a slightly Golden Sun look about it.
Theres a reason this game was considered a "Hidden Gem".The gameplay was so much fun and awesome puzzles which made it an actual awesome Zelda clone...but the story...damn...it was so dark&depressing like a really sad memory you wish to forget.I actually cried at some of the scenes in game and lost the urge to play it until I felt better. The way the NPC's were treated and then blaming Alundra for it too,and the music stuck the hearts chord during the death scenes.I could really feel the guilt. This game could soften even the stoniest hearts, but I missed playing it.
one of my favorite psx games, I love all about this game, music ,bosses, dungeons ..
I just found your channel, and I feel like your videos do great justice to the games you reviewed so far; keep up the good work!
edwingenesys Thanks! I'll do my best! :)
I need to play through Alundra again.
I got this game when it first came out and loved it. Great video.
hey man this vid is great. big alundra fan, learned some stuff i had no idea about. you've got a good thing going here, looking forward to seeing you get more comfortable/sound more natural reading your script. keep it up!
I used to love this way more than Zelda! What a game!!!
awesome review! please do alundra 2! it was one of the best games from my childhood!
Alundra 2??? Lol how was that a favorite?
Fantastic review. Always enjoy your videos! Curious, why haven't u done a review on Alundra 2? Don't recall seeing it in your channel...
Great review, love the "hi,I'm Peter Griffin" camera change! I did play alundra a long time ago and I liked it but surprisingly I really like part 2 a bit more, and I'm probably the only one. XD
5:28 I love that legend of legaia music slipping there
Actually, the song came from Alundra. The producer of the game went on to make Legaia and apparently used this song in Legaia too. Neat, huh? :)
@@SuperDerek Now that's a fun lil fact there! I've played both games on ps1 but probably forgot about that, I just had soooo much fun on Legaia that it did clicked this way.
I love this game big time. I'll make something about it one day.
I love this game and beat it many times. It's one of the few games I did a speed run in my life. I know it's an weird choice, but that's what I do when I become very familiar with a game. I like how you included the Meia dream song. It's one of my favorites from this game and games in general.
I know you haven't been doing as many reviews lately but I would love for you to take a look at the Tales of Series at some point. Considering the fact that Tales of Arise is releasing next year I think it would be a great opportunity to finally review some of the past Tales of games before that comes out.
dude finally someone reviews this masterpiece i feel like so many people dont know about alundra like everyone of my friends didn't even heard of it . for me its one of the best games to this day with mindblowing music tracks great story and overall awesome gameplay . everyone whos familiar with the zelda franchise should give it a try trust me you won't be disappointed!
and btw SuperDerek RPGs awesome review u really show ur love for this game in this video . Thumbs up.
Thanks man. By the way, have you checked out LandStalker? It's by some of the same people, I bet it'd feel pretty similar to you.
I may have an extra Alundra manual if you still need it!
Bloodborne meets Zelda! Can’t wait to play it!
Alundra was fantastic. Hell, even my Dad got into it. I'll have to hunt down a copy of LandStalker now. Excellent review!
Awww yeee, some great nostalgia of me playing this in high school. Such an incredible game. Great puzzles, amazing writing, and a sad, somber tone you just don't see that often. A+ game.
It's kinda funny cus I'm so used to hearing people call Dark Savior (personal favorite game) as a indirect sequel to Land Stalker. Never got far in this game myself due to a memory card issue I think it was at the time.
I bought Alundra (disk only) on a whim at a thrift store for 50 cents. I'd never heard of it before. Knew nothing about it.
I'm sooooo glad I did. Loving it so far.
Nice man!!! SOOOOOO many RPGS i haven't heard of :( have you played Golden Sun on the GBA... I only mention this because of Camelot and i gotta say its one of if mot my favorite RPG series on the GBA. Still need to play the DS one. Great review as always man. Stay cool!
I have heard of it, and I think I played a little bit of it when it came out a long time ago. It was a rental though, so I couldn't play it through. It's one of the few GBA games left on my want list! :)
It's really good :)
Super Derek Highly recommend Golden Sun and the sequel. You can import characters from the first game to the 2nd. I'm pretty sure you would enjoy it and I'm pretty sure I would enjoy watching you do a review of it.
Huh, so that's why Tenchi no Mon / Key of Heaven was so familiar. Never knew Climax Ent. had such a history with A-RPGs. Good stuff.
Alundra was a favorite RPG of mine. One of the first games I bought for my PS1.
Alundra! :D It is indeed awesome. ;) Another great game brought over to us by Working Designs. The entering dreams part of the game reminds me of Soul Blazer, but definitely expanded on. I like that you mention the quiet points in the game. Music can really help the emotional impact of a scene, but so can silence. Good review! Any plans of doing a review of Alundra 2 in the future? I've never actually played the second game, so I'd be interested in seeing your take on it.
i preordered this game and got it for my 14th birthday in 1998. the puzzles! thankfully official playstation mag did a 2 issue guide.
Working Designs known for quality? Say that to me when I'm trying to play Albert Odyssey. Fuck that translation. :'(
Ironically, the translation for Alundra is also unfaithful, there's many out of place jokes and innuendos that really clash with the serious tone of the game, it's so out of place and irrelevant to the game itself, they also increased all of the enemy and boss health.
Prices average around $180 for a copy of alundra (with map and manual) on eBay in 2022
Can't forget the amazing shining of the holy ark for the Saturn
one of my favorite games ever!
I bought this game way back then. It was actually one of my very first game that I bought myself. But sadly I wasn't able to afford a memory card at the same time. although I never got to enjoyed the game, it will always live with me forever
Great game just feel so difficult and everything can kill. I been playing it in the past couple of days and now am stuck in meia dream. Those platforming segments are the toughest i ever played.
Just remember about Alundra and continue to play on PSVita)
Thanks for good review
my all-time favorite
Fantastic game; I never could put my finger on why this game reminded me of Landstalker (as well as Terranigma) so much, but bow I know why. Thanks!
This game is also available on PSN for $6... a steal for such a classic!
Never finished this game but still like playing it
Hey super derek if u ever do go back to the genesis I recommend u check out a game called shadowrun it's super fun on genesis and think will make for a compelling and interesting episode and I think u will enjoy the game thoroughly
Damn Derek, this is one of the best reviews you've done IMO, despite you turning the TV off on me (again). I'll get you next time, Derek...NEXT TIIIIIIME!
But you totally did justice to Alundra, one of the best action RPGs on the PS1...no, one of the best on any platform. If there was one thing I would have liked to see you do with this review, it would be to elaborate a bit more on your assessment of puzzles with an actual example of one. But whatever, great stuff man, looking really professional these days. And as soon as you stop reviewing Persona games, you're only gonna get better and better! XP
Jimmy Hapa (Import Gaming FTW!) Thanks Jimmy! Believe me, I'm about ready to be done with these Persona games for a while. A good, long while.
Hello friend, congratulations, good job, review and great grand chanel.
A query as to play or make your videos look CTR TV, which filter or using an emulator ??
+Pedro Sepúlveda It's a filter that I apply to my captured video while editing the review. All gameplay is captured from their original consoles. Thanks! :)
+SuperDerek RPGs
thanks pal !!
Really loved Alundra, never beat it though, couldn't handle the platforming in the last dungeon.
0:37 You should review the Phantasy Star series. :)
Nice to see scanlines
Hmm this makes me want to try it. It reminds me of Illusion of Gaia and other action rpgs.
I can't recommend Alundra enough. It's a huge challenge and the feeling you get when you save a villager that you love having around...out of this world :).
I had my copy stolen when I got broke into as a kid. I bought it off e-Bay again when I was like 25 to get that hardcore Zelda goodness.
Wow, are you using music from Legend of Legaia? well if so you should definitely review it. even if you aren't you should still review it. It's a underrated game that deserves more attention. Keep up the good work man.
+Brandon Hveem The entire video featured only Alundra soundtrack lol
+Ann Night Actually, apparently one of the songs I used in this review was reused from Legend of Legaia. I had no idea. But I think one of the songs, Kara's theme, made it's way into Alundra. First time I've heard of something like that happening. :)
Legend of Legaia has one of my favorite sound tracks so I was fairly confident it was from there, but I've been wrong before. Awesome review regardless. Have you ever played Legend of Legaia Derek?
+Brandon Hveem Not yet, but it's one of those game's that's on my "Buy-on-sight" list, because I've gotten quite a few requests for it. :)
I got my copy for for like 20 bucks online, after my original got to scratched up. It was the first jrpg I ever played and is one opf my favorites. Even without nostalgia it has one of my favorite soundtracks and one of my favorite battle systems in all of gaming. I highly recommend it. If I ever find an extra copy I will send it your way.
not to say your old videos are bad but this video is deff high quality and seems like u put a lot off effort and time into it bro. now i gotta scramble up money and buy this game
Rad review!
Can't believe I never played this. I've known about it for nearly 2 decades but never got my hands on it.
i did play this when it just came out, and i did loved it, funny thing is that i did play this before zelda,
Music playing in the 6:00 mark is from Legend of Legaia right!?
Someone else a while back brought this up -- it's actually in both games, believe it or not! :D
@@SuperDerek nooo wayyy!!!
I first heard it in Alundra (in North america, not sure about other regions) in '97, then I heard it again in Legaia in '99.
@@KishinZephrite never fully played alundra. I think it was a rental back in the day don’t remember much let alone the music. That is shocking they recycled the music
@@grahfkarate1799 I never could have beaten this game as a rental. I bought the game and left it unfinished for like 10 years. Glad I eventually completed it.
What is the emulator you're using? It's awesome!
definitely one of the best during the psx era, so sad its almost forgotten nowdays.
I remember seeing this game at the rental store when I was growing up, but I never tried it out. But it looks pretty interesting!
Also, Camelot... I know I've seen that logo before for something but I can't recall what. My gut wants to say something on a handheld? Possibly Fire Emblem? Maybe?
They're also famous for the Golden Sun games. ;)
That's.. actually what I meant to type when I typed Fire Emblem. Thanks~
Brad Cook Camelot also made Mario Golf Advance. Truth be told I could give a rat's ass about golf. You would never find me watching golf on TV. However, the game has RPG elements such as getting exp and leveling up your stats. Insanely addictive and deeper than even PGA tour games.
Andrew Phillips Ohhh yeah, didn't SNESDrunk do a video covering the game not too long ago? Thought it looked really interesting/ :)
Super Derek Just checked out his channel and yes he has a video about it. They also made a Mario Tennis game with the same leveling up stat concept. Mario Golf was on GBC first and had the leveling up system as well.
Another pretty crazy golf game is Pangya! Fantasy Golf. MetalJesusRocks covered it on a PSP hidden gem video. I saw it at Gamestop for like $2.69 and recognized it from the video, and I must say it was a great purchase. I put in around 31 hours and still have a ton to do in the game.
I loved this game when I played it when I was a 14 year old boy in the 90's
Another game to put on the to play list. I downloaded the PSN version but haven't gotten to it yet. Your review of Innocent Sin inspired me to finally play through it and I just finished it yesterday. I started playing Arc the Lad. I finished it a long long time ago so since it is only 10 hours long and Arc the Lad 2 is a direct sequel I decided to play thru it again and then do Arc the Lad 2. Maybe I'll throw in Alundra soon.
Andrew Phillips How did you feel about the ending to Innocent Sin? :)
Super Derek Dissatisfied. Thing is I played Eternal Punishment a few years back. I rarely replay JRPGs especailly long ones. But, I'm thinking of playing EP again.
I do however understand that if you do 2 playthrus and choose each of the 2 Persona 1 characters you open up the "EX Dungeon" or something like that.
Might do that at some point, but would be quite a commitment.
Andrew Phillips I agree. Loved the characters, but that ending nearly ruined it for me. Glad I wasn't the only one. :)
Super Derek Aye, I enjoyed the characters as well, but I think my favorite is Baofu from EP. As you can see by my Citan avatar perhaps I have a leaning towards intelligent, long haired, glasses, and greenish yellow jacket wearing characters.
The part in the beginning where you have to speak to every npc in the town to progress drives me crazy
I loved this game!
Portland? Are you from Oregon, or did you mean Portland Maine?
Another great video as always, Derek!
P.S. Get rekt, Jimmy.
Alundra and Alundra 2 are brilliant games! The kind of games I like!
just bought a vita and in the store i saw this in the ps store psone classic section i had to hold in the tears
If this got a re-release on Xbox with it's sequel, I'd buy it.
I've got the sequel hard copy but the original is way better. And Alundra is the best Zelda style RPG I've played. Ever.
Alundra is The Legend of Zelda meets A Nightmare On Elm Street which was very well done.
do you ever going to make review on game series like: Disgaea, the legend of dragoon,Grandia, suikoden, skies of arcadia ?
DrRESHES I definitely intend to! I own most of those games you listed, but I won't start the Suikoden series until I've got a copy of Suikoden 1, so far I only own III and IV. :)
Super Derek that's alright =) I try not get the hype get to me, after all many people say that Suikoden is the greatest JRPG (of all time's (or one of), too bad i didnt played much any Suikoden games or FF6/7 so i dont have any strong attachment's to them only Jagged Alliance 2 -)
but i REALLY want to try them, if i have any time. right now i need to finish "Oreshika Tainted Bloodlines". BTW do you have any recent new JRPG's you liked ?
DrRESHES Sadly, I haven't. I mean, I played Pokemon X, which was in my opinion, exactly like every other Pokemon game I've ever played which at this point is neither a bad, nor a good thing really, but I'd have a hard time saying that I really liked it. Beyond that though, I haven't played any modern JRPGs, unless you paint "JRPG" (and "new") with a really wide brush -- in which case I really liked my time with Dark Souls 1 and 2.
On the other hand, I've been interested in playing Bravely Default, since I've been hearing some really good things about that. And Persona 4 Golden for PS Vita, which I don't own...
Actually I just remembered that I DID get a new JRPG in the mail the other day for an upcoming review. Here's a hint: I'll be playing it on the Sega Genesis! ;)
Super Derek that was mouthfull =) So far i didn't played a lot of pokemon, many of my friend's had played it and i played it when i got the chance to meet them,it was good. i didnt play much of it but i can go without pokemon.
if only i've got the DS instead of vita i would love to play Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakening,Fantasy Life,Persona Q and many, many more. but i stil love my vita alot.
i've actually started playing FF3 cuz the remake look's a lot like Bravely Default in character Design,
and about the Persona4Golden, its great.
I'll be glad to see you make a review on that game, i dont really know what would it be but its good to have an intrigue. Good luck!
Just a quick question for anyone that may know. Are the graphics 2d sprites? How about the backgrounds? If that's the case then wow!!
Yep! It's all 2D sprite-work! :)
Dayum talk about beautiful pixel art
I've just got a playstation classic and a true blue stick for this game and castlevania solely. As I've never played them
Dude I did the same but try legacy of kain both games
Your hand gestures are hilarious. You move like sailor moon or a power ranger. Still inciteful review though
