I changed out the pots on a squire strat (super cheap Chinese made)
The new full sized pots from GFS made a huge difference in my tone.
Now to install a tone cap. And a treble bleed circuit

I just had an amazing experience with tone capacitors. The usual values, we know the differences in sound. Most of the time as soon as you set the potentiometer to zero the sound is muffled, unusable. With 0.015uf it is the least worst. I experimented with much lower values, between 0.0047uf and 0.0082uf. It sounds like a wahwah pedal stuck in the middle position, when the tone pot is at zero. With some mid/treble frequencies which are preserved. By choosing the right value I reached an extremely interesting and unique sound, and above all very usable. Not a dull, uninteresting sound. I tested these values with a single p90 junior LP (50's wiring). The sound is amazing. I think that for stratocaster style pickups or humbuckers, other values could be better, but not certain.

I almost bought Seymour Duncan's for My Harley Benton fusion. Very Expensive. Then I did some research. I discovered that the tone pot makes a big difference. Humbuckers usually have 500k pots. I found the Roswell pups were harsh and toppy, compared to my Seymour Duncan's on another guitar. I put 250k on the volume pot and whey hey. The Roswell harsh pickup sounded smooth and mellow like the Seymour Duncan. saved my self a lot of money.

I want to say thanks for the information. Just FYI you should always check new capacitors no matter what brand to make sure they are close to tolerance. If the tolerance if off it may be a bit out of range. So although some brands may be hype, there are tolerance gaps to consider on low cost pots.

Tone pot in '0' position forms a low pass filter with serial resistance equal to the pots max resistance. This is why 'tone at 10' still affects your signal slightly. (dB drop, tiny high-end loss depending on cap+res values and pickup specs) You will easily see the difference when using no-load tone pots. This way you can take the LP filter out of the circuit when the pot is at 100% and compare.

incorrect. the cap is out of the circuit at that point, but the loading effect of just the pot is still there. you can remove the cap, you will still have this effect. the no load pot has a break in the resistance strip, and creates an infinite resistance, so it removes the loading effect of the pot.
With time, practice and playing comes a much deeper understanding of the sound we are aiming to produce via our feelings through the strings. Till recent times I never used my tone pots. Always on 10. Today I changed a broken potentiometer on my guitar because the feelings I am trying to replicate through playing meant I had too.

In a speaker crossover, caps difference can be heard. The most important thing.. old caps, esp oil impregnated, dry out. Values can shift with electrolytics too, after 10 yrs or so.

Interesting. As i gather more guitars of various values, i tend to take them apart, modify some parts and look for ways to make them better. Basically i tend to take everything apart, not just guitars, but in line with this vid, i might try a cap mod on one of my guitars, because many tone controls do tend to muddy the output. Also my strat bridge PUP is not wired for tone and i might like to have that feature. That might be something i will try. I also went to the suggested site and learned about the different caps. TY. Just good stuff on this channel.

I used a tone capacitor in my hollowbody guitar to brighten the sound of the muddy neck pickup. I just soldered a 0.047 cap in series with the hot pickup lead, very simple and effective.

@@user-vw1ow7mk1c the type of capacitor has no bearing on the tone, only the value. it is a passive low pass filter. the signal doesn't actually pass through the capacitor. yes, i am certain, and people can disagree and they can be wrong. just like people can disagree with the earth being an oblate spheroid. lots of people think the earth is flat. doesn't mean they are correct.

About 6 years ago I picked up a like new, one owner, 2005 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded T. At first I was thinking that it probably had a printed circuit board and that I'd have to yank it out and put in the real deal. I was wrong. The T in Faded T really is for Traditional. I opened it up to see old school wiring and with Burstbucker Pro pickups. As for my Les Paul, I've kept it the way it is. This guitar is the first guitar I've owned that I didn't have to make any modifications to. However, if I did, it would be the caps. Great video, glad I found your channel.

Thanks for the education! I’m getting ready (this year) to modify a Squire Bronco reissue Bass. They come with a Strat pickup that’s a little weak. This reproduces what was done decades ago. I want to keep the unique sound. I want it to have more punch. I’m going with a Fralin Bar Strat bridge pickup. Fralin’s representative (Jon Brown) recommended using a .047 cap. 🙂😎

In my experience, caps have a role to play IF you use your tone control. I prefer to leave them 100% open, and use the EQ on my amp. I think it is much more important to have the right pickups and the correct value pots to suit them.

Funny coincidence, I just bought a few capacitors to try out in my guitars within the last two days and I also stumbled upon the Dylan Talks Tone channel at the same time while searching for capacitor related topics on RUclips. I also learned a few more tech tips watching that channel.
You can definitely do some tone tweaks by using different capacitor values but it's at least debateable that you will get audible difference out of paying relatively high prices for paper in oil "custom tone" capacitors. You can get a pack of 20 decent quality polypropylene film capacitors for less than two bucks these days so I would probably start experimenting with some of those before buying expensive ones. Chances are pretty good that the small tone differences your hear when changing capacitor have more to do with variations in value (or more precisely deviations from rated capacitance values) than the material it's made from. I believe you are absolutely right in saying that what matters are the pickups. Capacitors don't make tone. They actually just remove some tone from the pickups by filtering out some of the higher frequencies.
I hope that I don't come across as supercilious by adding that unless the tone potentiometers in your guitar are of the no load type (which is generally rare) the capacitor may actually have a small impact on your tone when the tone control is not in use (on zero). When using normal tone pots a little bit of signal will still reach the capacitor when you have the tone control on zero. The lower the maximum resistance of the tone potentiometer (normal type) the more the tone gets affected by the capacitor. E.g. the capacitor will affect the signal more by using normal 250K pots compared to using normal 500K pots. Perhaps you knew this but I just wanted to clarify that a bit more.

Ah! the voice of reason to cut through the snake oil filled emerson capacators.
And so true about the tone bleed on the pots. In all my guitars I always disasemble the tone pot and cut the carbon track just before the fully open position to make the capactor totally open circuit. I still have full tone control without the tone suck at 10. The difference is like night and day.
Or it could be done with a pull switch on the tone pot to switch out the cap.

The main thing is that tone comes from you. Your amp choice, your guitar and how you play is more important. I don't chase tone, I found my tone. It did take me some time to understand tone. It's from you.

clearly it's to dial in a tone you like.
capacitors can change the sound from the source of the signal just like a pickup.i believe most of these slightly subtle changes can't be felt through watching another person play..but if you owned or played a certain instrument for a while that you know exactly what it sounds like. if you switched a cap in it. you would likely notice the difference.
orange drop cap may not change the personality of the guitar like for instance changing to a different pickup but it can change how clear or muffled the tone sounds.
from my personal experience, certain capacitors give a more rounded muffled sound vs others more edgy clear open/raw sound. and interesting enough that difference was noticeable even when tone knob was at 100%.
Every guitar we play sounds like us. Good observation.

To change the natural tone of pickup configuration is one thing,but changing capacitor values and modding effect pedals is another way to help roll off tone and achieve a desired sound.equalizers, treble bleeds (which act as low pass highpass filters) can help reduce the unwanted noise and humming in your signal as well.higher value capacitors are found in bass guitar pickups use 600v capacitors which produces a significant difference in frequency than a stock guitar.i discovered this when I added a white molded 600v .47uf capicitor in parallel to my strats original green 473k tone cap.

The voltage rating on capacitors means literally nothing in guitar/bass tone circuits.. A 600v capacitor is about 100x more than needed...
The capacitor material, and the capacitance rating is what matters in regards to the sound. .022pf vs .047pf
Nothing going through the capacitor is heard.. It is dumped to ground. Only what doesn't flow through the capacitor is what you hear through your amp..
Hi, the caps alter the tone in position 0 is afected by the cap, also the volume pot o anithing that sum resistance to the load of the circuit. When you change the value of the tone cap, the low pass filter change to and the center peak frequency, when you bypass tone circuit a la "Van Halen" the pickups sound with all the frecuency free, and if you change the volume pot for one whit more value, more HIghs lets trough. The value of the capacitor not only changes the amount of treble that goes to ground in use, but also a low pass filter is always applied, this filter is more or less aggressive depending on the value. In short, depending on the sound of the pickups, you can choose the tone capacitor that makes it sound better while the tone is at 0.

I have done some experimenting with capacitors, and have found some differences in tone. The pio caps seem to smooth out tone, as where orange drops give me a little more of a "bold" tone. Though minor, I can hear the difference. Of course the value is where I can hear the bigger difference. I have both .022 and .047 in different humbucker guitars, and the .047 is definitely a darker tone. I also find a difference depending on the value of the pickups. I'm not a tone nut by any means, but it's fun to experiment. Dylan Talks Tone is a great channel. That guy knows his stuff for sure!!! Great plug. 👍 Great playing as well Jonathan. 👍👍🤘🤘🎸🎸

Capacitance, resistance and inductance of components may vary with voltage, current, temperature, etc. but all electric guitars operate with low power signals (hence the amplifiers) and room temperatures.
In these nice conditions all electronic components with same nominal values will behave the same.
Two .XYZuf capacitors will have the same (i.e. negligibly different) frequency response and sound the same, regardless of the type or the manufacturer.
You can literally buy sets of 100 capacitors in any electronics store for the price some of these snake oil companies charge for 1 magic "tone cap".

I ordered a Russian NOS PIO I found that was about 3rd cost of the usual ones and a mojotone current production. I am going to install these with CTS pots on one of my LP's and see what it does first hand.

Having put together or rewired many guitars, the electronic components are indeed a bit overlooked but they do make a difference. Even with the tone control at 100%, the circuit is still loaded and you can hear a difference between ceramic and orange drop/paper oil capacitors. You can try this by installing a blower switch (pickup bypasses the controls and go direct to the output jack). The difference between orange drop and a high quality paper/oil capacitor is more subtle, with the latter being a tad warmer sounding. Experimenting with different values is also good. I prefer 0.015 as it gives more control and I dont need extreme treble cut. I use it a lot on a single coil bridge pickup which is why i mod all strats to have a separate tone for bridge and neck and none for middle with 2 separate capacitors. Another interesting mod is to use a much smaller capacitor for the bridge pickup. it kinda gives the effect of a mid-boost (or use a toggle switch to choose between that and the regular tone control).

Have you ever thought of putting a treble bleed modification in your guitars?
I did that with most guitars and I love it as my volume doesn't affect my tone anymore which also has a better effect on the overdrive and distortion pedals and certain modulation pedals as you don't lose your high frequencies.
Yes most of my guitars have treble bleed. But I left some alone because I wanted the affected tone when I dial the volume down a bit :)

To me, capacitors are basically fine tuning the tone. I think trying a range of values of one type (paper in oil, ceramic, etc.) to see what you like best from each of those types.Then compare your favorite from each is the best way to determine what sounds best in your particular guitar. If course this costs you extra unless you have access to the capacitors for free before selecting.

i liked the playing. regarding the capacitor for the tone knob your sending that signal to ground. your not hearing that. so you can take the cheapest cap you can find. i assume the differences you hear is because of the tolerances of the caps.

Regarding caps and tone, from youtube video I find that adding a tone pots and caps can change the guitar sound. Even when tone knob is set to 10, it still change guitar sound. Guitar without tone knob sounds brighter.

You can actually bypass on every guitar the tone knob with a mod, going directly to output jack from selector and vol. pot , with an on-on mini switch. So you can choose: sound thru pots or unchanged. Even bypassing all pots is this way possible. The full, unaltered signal from the pickups right out

The type of capacitor does make a difference. Just not in this use case. The type really comes into play when caps get hot, in high voltage circuits, RF coupling etc.
None of those apply to guitar circuits so just pay attention to the values

One of the advantages of Orange Drop capacitors is that if you or someone solders snd accidentally burns it from sloppy soldering, it still works fine even if it gets burned and damaged. Sometimes durability and build quality is the reason an item is preferable
i have more than a year using emerson 0.047 on my telecaster, the tone that guitar drive me to play some smooth tone (jazzy kind a like). and to day i try to put the cheap capacitor (mkm capacitor/mylar type i think). and tone my guitar drive me to play more vintage tone like the real blues and country music type. i am using pure vintage 64 pickup from fender. i believe need more time to feel the capacitor change your tone. IMHO

I am thinking of putting an Orange drop 0.47uf for my telecaster since I feel it is very bright, do you recommend it? I must also look at the voltage of the capacitor since I have seen 600v and 400v... which one do I choose? greetings

But as far as type?; disc, orange drop, paper-in-oil, the little green thing, etc,... that’s all basically “paper-in-Snake oil”..

I'm thinking of removing my tone pot on my telecaster and replacing it with a tandem set of potentiometers. Soldering in some caps and creating a simple band pass filter. But I'm not sure what value of caps I should be aiming for that will allow me to have a complete sweep both ways from 14khz all the way down to 60hz.
Any suggestions on what will work or where I can find the solution ?

Look at the frequency range of the guitar. Your guitar doesn't even go down to 60hz. Maybe 40 hz and it definately doesn't go up to 1khz. I would start with a .015uf, .022uf. .o47uf, ect.... Good luck with your mod and I like your idea.
I usually leave my tone at around 7 on my LP and Tele and crank it up for prominent single picking, sometimes rolling down to smooth over the cleans. What I'm learning is that a lot of the older players I like were constantly adjusting tone and volume but with the older wiring/caps/pots. They got more range and subtlety from these older parts.
