    "I didn't always take you where you _wanted_ to go, but I always took you where you _needed_ to go."
    I don't think any line has so successfully retconned the entire history of a piece of media like this one did.
    It completely recontextualises the relationship between the Doctor and the TARDIS, and why we always seem to go to the "wrong" place, because the TARDIS is time and knows where the Doctor is most needed in the universe.

      I’d highly recommend watching the Fourth Doctor season arc from Classic Who for The Key of Time if you haven’t already, particularly the ending. The Doctor does something that pertains to the continuity of this.

      This episode made me think of an old Twilight Zone episode called "What You Need" in which a peddler always gives people what they need before they need it.
      Personally, I always liked the idea that the Doctor sort of stumbled into adventures. It's slightly less exciting if we know the TARDIS took him there to do something on purpose.

    It was perfect casting and styling of Idris-TARDIS. Old fashioned looking but a bit mad and trying to keep past present & future in her mind all at the same time. The "Hello Doctor" is always emotional at the end and always reminds me of Sarah-Jane.

    The Doctor's first love has been and always will be the TARDIS. He's married to the job, and if it wasn't for the TARDIS he wouldn't be the Doctor, that's why the title is fitting.
    She is all of time and space, he is the Lord of Time, a more perfect couple can't exist. Even when he is alone, he always has her, she was there at the beginning, she will be there until the end, he may have two hearts, but she holds both.
    The Doctor and The TARDIS. Without one, the other is empty.
    They are soulmates, lovers, husband and wife, best friends.....They are all of these and more, but more importantly, they are one complete individual.

    Why is the Tardis the Doctor’s Wife? Well because she’s been by his side since day 1. Throughout the whole show the one thing that always remains is the TARDIS.

    Story time. So tonight is my 20th high school reunion, which for many reasons I am not attending-- not the least being that it's in a faroff country from where I live now. That gives you a sense of what An Old I am compared to you two, so believe me when I say from experience that that first semester/term or two at university is a very high stress situation, even in comparison to other major life events/transitions/traumas you'll go through over the next couple of decades. You have the very overwhelming pressure of playing in the adult pool with adult consequences while adapting socially/professionally (and, if you're like the two of you (and me at the time) trying to navigate a relationship from both a new kind of distance and with a new set of pressures and personal growth). Which is just to say that I deeply appreciate you taking the precious time that you have together to gift us with entertainment and the pleasure of your virtual company.
    That relationship I was in, by the way, is still going delightfully strong-- we challenge each other and grow together in love, so believe in each other and make it through the process together. Good luck to the two of you, be as kind to each other and as respectful of this transitional time as you can. And deep gratitude, again, for taking time out of your lives to give me something that brings me a little joy, I hope you can keep it going long term but please take care of yourselves and your relationship first and foremost.

    Have to say the only thing I don't like about this one is the title as well, the relationship isn't anything as simple as 'wife' and it domesticated a very fantastical idea. But when the title is the thing you have the biggest problem with, the episode must be pretty decent!

    21:57 I'm less bothered by the title than that the (female) TARDIS is called Idris, a male name. It was the same with the mother called Ambrose (another male name) in Hungry Earth/Cold Blood.

    • @Jim_The_Fish
      @Jim_The_Fish Год назад

      I’ve seen it used for both, like Alex or Sam or Aaron/Erin

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk Год назад

      @@Jim_The_Fish Ambrose derives from the Latin "Ambrosius", which is definitely a male name. Alex, short for Alexander, is also male (unless it's short for Alexandra, which is a female name). Likewise Sam, if short for Samuel, is clearly male, but female if it's short for Samantha. Aaron (derived from the Hebrew for "strong", and definitely a male name) is unrelated to Erin (which is based on the Irish name for Ireland).
      If parents are so misinformed/ignorant as to give their boy a girl's name, or vice-versa, that's too bad ;)

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk Год назад

      @@Jim_The_Fish It's not trivial, and neither is it ambiguous nor arbitrary; it's a fact that these names actually have a gender, and that has been known _and applied_ for centuries. The fairly recent trend of mis-applying such names to children of the "wrong" sex is at best ignorant, and at worst disrespectful of the history of the name and the culture from which it comes.
