Gosh, my instincts would have to jump off the jet ski before landing. I have a friend whose x-ray looks almost exactly like his. He was paralyzed from waist down, in a wheelchair for almost a year, but with hard work and a super positive mind, he is walking now. My friend's injuries were much worst the this lad's, so there is much light for a good recovery. My friend says not having the head space of a victim really saw him through the recovery. Much, much powerful mana to you.

If you surf I highly recommend that you don't. I surfed my entire life and after my surgery my neck and back don't work the same and I can't bring my legs up under me to plant my feet on my board so my surfing days are done. While my back was broken I was actually able to surf still. It was incredibly painful afterwards but I could surf. Surfing was my passion and now it's all about the memories. Just my two cents. 🤙😀

Yeah, not really. That's pretty much what you expect to happen when you have humans on motorized water craft amongst giant waves, in a universe that includes gravity. . Now if the wave suddenly flattened or the jet skis floated softly back to the water, I'd agree with you.
Hope you recover fast and completely. I had that same exact injury in my lower back and a couple disc fused in my neck. Can't surf anymore. I had a good run though. 🤙😀

Those ex rays were of his neck. I’ve been on a wave runner jumping waves, but never anything like he did, and the landing was brutal. I’m surprised anyone got away without injury. Those waves looked 40 to 60 feet high. My prayers are with him for a full recovery.
Godspeed to you, Mossy. ... and to everyone else, You won't ever get hurt if you don't ever do anything. To all of the negative ones out there, enjoy your stagnant life.
That was an amazing jump. Charging a wave like that is definitely questionable, but if Ryan would have gotten away from the jet ski instead of riding it back down, he would have probably been ok. I'm sure Ryan will replay that moment for the rest of his life. It was a jaw dropping moment watching that, but at the same time it was concerning for the exact reason that one hoped the rider didn't come down on the jet ski, which it seems what happened. Hope the recovery goes well Ryan.
Should have spun around and outran the wave or decelerated at the top before going over it. Super bad decision by the driver and could have caused way more carnage if he landed on top of someone.
unfortunately, he had no time to decelerate...he was hard on the throttle to keep from getting pitched by the lip. he should have turned and ran first thing. i can imagine how it must have seemed routine to race the wave to the shoulder, and underestimate the size of that wave. once in the air, he should have sent the ski and abandoned ship. i'm sure it all happened very fast.
The Hawaiian lifeguards! Angels on the sea or land. These guys risk all for your safety. Thank you for all you do and all the lives you save! Much love and healing to you also young man, your anguish was heard and prayers follow...
So it wasn't the wave that got them, it was the acceleration and jump off the back end, with the photog falling however-many-feet-it-was off the back of the jet ski?
I think the problem was that he was still sitting on the back of the jetski when it landed, thus compressing his spine. If he had instead landed on the water he probably wouldn't have suffered that kind of injury. In a situation like that things happen very fast and probably didn't have time to react / bail out.
Boaters kinds know, you don't accellarate up a swell. You come off the throttle as you get further up so you just crest it, so that doesn't happen. Panic, I get it. Sure hope he makes a full recovery.
Help I need to know..are the jet skiers try to jump wave with photographs on board? New sport ? Have seen jet skiers taking boarders out and saving them.
