  • Taking another few steps forward with my layout. All of the installed rock casting have now had the gaps filled with hydrocal plaster. Pink foam was installed under the photo backdrop to blend the backdrop into the terrain shape. Plaster cloth was added to cover any pink foam and all of the plaster cloth was painted dark brown up to the point where the rock castings end.

I know you will probably plant trees on that berm by the backdrop. However, another detail item came to mind while watching you paint the plaster cloth. A little leveling and some retaining walls and you could have that dirt access road parallel to the tracks that one often sees in photos of the SP ROW. I am talking about the two rut type that the railroad maintenance trucks use to reach signals, etc. along the ROW. It could cross the tracks just before the tunnel area and continue further to the left. Just a thought...

That's a great idea! I should have room between the tracks and the retaining wall for a truck. I'll have to take a look and see if I can figure out a way to get a truck up there, a ramp or something. I appreciate the idea!

Just a suggestion...maybe you could put the hydrocal mixture into a ziploc bag...snip off a corner and "pipe" it into the cracks. Progress looks great so far!

That's a good idea, I might have to try that. Thanks Greg, I appreciate you watching!

What is the material/thickness of the sheet you have for bldgs between the front and rear of layout (white, styrene?) I'm trying to determine foundations for my structures so removable for maintenance, moving, etc, can just lift it and go.

I have some 1/8" styrene sheet to place under the buildings. I haven't fully committed to that yet, but I have some cut for a couple buildings. It would be very handy if moving to a new house.
