Scale Trains Rivet Counter 48' Thrall Steel Coil Car. First Impressions and Run-By's.
I purchased 2 Scale Trains Rivet Counter 48' Thrall Steel Coil Cars during Scale Trains Winter sale. The regular price for these cars is $52.99 each, I paid $39.99 each. I was impressed by the high level of detail these cars have; they certainly deserve the Rivet Counter name. Although I did not weight the cars with the coils installed, they seemed to have substantial heft. The biggest negative was the squealing wheels in the trucks that could be fixed with some lubrication.

In this video I demonstrate how to design your custom LED circuits for long life. Using Ohms Law all parameters of an LED circuit can be determined so there is no guesswork. You will know exactly how your planned LED circuit will perform. A demonstration circuit is designed and built for 5 VDC and 12VDC. A digital multimeter is used to measure resistance and voltage values.

My Scale Trains Rio Grande SD45 has returned from warranty repair. When first receiving the model there was a problem with the front truck. I sent the SD45 back to Scale Trains and they took care of the problem at no cost to me other than mailing cost to return the model. Scale Trains also paid for return shipping. The model now runs great, and I've speed matched it to my other 6 axle locomotives.

    You can really fill cushion cars on a train. They come in and out. You either run with air set on the cars (stretched) so the train slack is all out, or (bunched) full dynamics where all the slack is pushed in (This is a lot easier if you're DP'ed). There's a lot going on then most people think!

    • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve День назад

      I imagine so. I have no real railroad experience so I wouldn't know. But I can see how there could be a lot of movement over the length of a long train.

    Hi Steve, I'm impressed on your modeling skills. Is there anything you can't do? You even have a great taste in muscle cars. I Love both Pontiac Firebirds. The 1971Formula Firebird 400 and let's not forget The 1974Trans Am. Back in the late 70's in fact I think I got lucky when I went to Pontiac Dealership near my house and when I went in the showroom floor the salesman rubbed me the wrong way. He did almost everything possible to discourage me about purchasing the ultimate Muscle Car A 1979 Black-on-Black Pontiac Trans Am 49th State Model with a 4-speed 400cid Motor. As I said the salesman was so rude. Now all this happened back in February of 1976 a year before The Smokey and the Bandit Craze but when I fell in Love with the 1969 model with the huge 455cid. I was two young when that car made it's debut. Anyway the salesman said that it was impossible for me to purchase the car because it was already sold out and we're talking 1976. I told him that's not possible that far back and it's even rare in finding a 49 state model because California was the only state to sell the Automatic Transmission Model 403cid Engine. So after a great deal of research towards the end of March of 1977 I traveled to Las Vegas and I met with a Pontiac Dealership there and I put a large deposit for about $10k and I purchased a Brand New Car that won't be ready until October of 1978. I purchased the Car for $15k and they shipped it to me at my house in California. As I said the car is a Black-on-Black Special Edition Model 4-speed 400cid The Motor was Balanced and the Blueprinteda full size Gold Screaming Eagle covered the entire hood. Gold Special Edition Rims Gold Dashboard the entire car was avery Rare Automobile because of the size of the Motor 400cid and the 4-speed Transmission too Boot. Then I made the biggest mistake of them all. I had to sell my car in January of 1989 because I was going to move to to get married in April of 1989. My parents said that since I was moving to St. Louis I had to take everything with me. So I had no choice but to sell my car and ended up with a 1979 4 Door Ford LTD Grand Marquee Family Car. In a way I'm glad I didn't keep it because after I arrived in St. Louis 3wks later we got hit with over 7 inches of snow and living in a Apartment the snow plows while clearing the streets buried my car while I was outside trying to dig myself out and the plows threw over a additional 4 inches on top of what I've dug the car out of. Lastly I'm still living in St. Louis going on 36 yrs. later and I still haven't seen not one Trans Am from 1969-1979 on the road anywhere. I've even gone to a lot of Car Shows and still no luck. Well I'm sorry I've talked your ear off. Do you still have both Trans Am? If you don't Please take very good care of them and send me a few photos and I'll try not to cry. My phone number is (314) 537-4733 if you like to send me a text with some photos of your muscle cars. Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan Martinez

    Hello Sir, I understand why you placed the shrink tubing on the single wire, but what I don't understand is why did you add a 2nd tubing to shrink wrap the 3 wires together? Is there a shrink tubing that is big enough to cover all 3 wires at once? and is it a good idea to do it that way one tubing for all 3 wires.

    • @SPSteve

Doing HVAC when hooking up Heat Pumps we use 8ct T-stat....18/8 Necessary for extra hooking ups like reversing valve and thermostat for communication....low voltage we say....24v Thanks for sharing as this is a refresher. Awesome layout too!!!!

      Thanks! My oldest son is an HVAC tech. Great career field. Yes, I could have mentioned the color bands, but I didn't want to put out too much information and overwhelm people. I didn't recommend more than 12V for a power supply because it will generate too much circuit power and requires much higher wattage resistors to limit the current. I appreciate you watching and good luck in your career!

      @SPSteve You did a terrific job explaining! You're right about overwhelming people who are just learning. Keep videos coming...I'm up early every morning...Ha. Serious though after 20yrs and raised 2 boys getting back into HO scale trains. I owned the Grand Valley from woodland scenics but ready for bigger and more elaborate layout. Again, thanks for sharing.

      @@KSee618 Awesome! I'm 68, I've been retired for 7 years. The model railroad and other projects keep me as busy as I want to be. I'm sure the Grand Valley introduced you to some of the techniques needed in model railroading if you were new to the hobby. My layout is my first one. I'd change some things if I were to do it over but I'm too old to start over with a new layout, so I'll finish what I have, and it'll be good enough. I'd like to finish it eventually. I've found the hobby to be rewarding, and it lets me use various different skills that keep it fresh and keeps the gray matter from turning to sludge. ;) Good luck with your new layout and most important, have fun!

    Just bought a '71 Formula 400 with the Rally Gauges and A/C. A/C is not complete. Has some exterior rust, but floors appear to be solid, so hoping I can take each area of dilemma and resolve it in one or two weekend. Interior is mint original, only has 88K miles, but the chrome is tired. Your '74 TA detailing was on my mind when I bought this...I also have a '74 Formula 400 that needs floors and trunk replaced, so I've been aware of your channel for a while...but, I never knew you had a '71!!! Yay! I've got lots of great videos from you to look forward to!!! Sorry you sold yours, but hope you bought something else really cool!!!

I still have the 74 Trans Am, I have a 70 Olds Rallye 350, a 2024 Bronco Heritage and 2 motorcycles. I am considering selling some of these since I'm getting old. Maybe get down to just one classic car and the Bronco?

    I recall these were offered in 2022 but Tangent still has 10 or the 12 Rio Grande road numbers in stock as of the present. The SP version with the yellow door has been sold out for about a year now. I picked up 3 D&RGW and 2 SP back when these were first offered. I generally try to keep my rolling stock limited to no later than 1980 so the Cotton Belt with the 3 panel stencil are a bit new for me and I haven't bought any so far. The slippery slope is to buy models outside a time frame or scope or because it's shiny, and as the years go by you will find yourself with more models that you an use - lately I've been having a hard time finding shelf space for them all!. I started out buying models ranging from early 1960's to about 1994 in the early 1990's and because I feel trains look best with cabooses, decided to move my cut-off back to mid-1985 which is about when Rio Grande mainline trains began running without cabooses. So I sold almost everything past 1985. Nevertheless, there have been so many nice models from Tangent, Moloco and the per-diem cars from Atlas, and others, that collecting over the past decade has me almost choked with rolling stock. So I've been going through my shelves and thinning things down as my layout, which is sizable and has 11 long staging tracks, just can't come close to handling all the trains. I'm also trying to slow down or minimize purchases of more rolling stock. Of course with the recent Moloco ACF hi-cubes, I have 3 of those on the way. I expect to be downsizing house in 5 or 6 years, which means moving so I'm also trying to thin things down to minimize what I have to move. The good thing is as I sell trains, it helps to keep the collection from getting bigger and it funds the purchase of some of the nicer, newer items coming out.

    • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve 18 дней назад

      I agree with all that you said. I would have liked to get a few of the Tangent SP high cubes, but I was late getting to the Tangent site. I've been guilty of going past my 1980 cut off a lot lately and I do it again in an upcoming video. And you're right you can't run them all. As I buy new high-end models, I sell off models I will never use. I'm spoiled now; I have a small group of manufacturers I buy from and most other manufacturers I don't even look at. I've sold off almost all of my mid-range models and I'm to the point where my 50-car collection of Kadee models is now the lower end of my rolling stock. I will probably keep about 20 Kadee models to run with my MT-4 and the rest I'll start selling off this summer. I'm trying to keep the number of cars I have reasonable and as I sell off the lower end models, the quality of my remaining collection is getting higher and higher. I can see where after this summer my Athearn Genesis cars will be the lower end of my quality scale. I will also downsize my house at some point when I'm too old to take care of what I have now. (assuming I live long enough) My next house will be a condo, and my layout will have to fit in a small room. But I'm not there yet and there's no guarantee I'll be alive tomorrow so I'm not shortchanging myself today. But that's me and everyone has their own rules on how to live life.

    I think the lights on the inside are a little too bright, but that might just be from the video. If you say it is good, it must be. How many hours did you actually spend making this beauty ?

    • @SPSteve
      @SPSteve 19 дней назад

      I don't know how many hours are in it. As a guess, maybe 20-25? But I don't really know. The lights are bright, especially when all of the room lights are off. I will probably just have the layout lights off when running "at night" and leave some of the room lights on. That might make the interior light look less bright. I appreciate you watching!
