Rescuing a flying-fox in a skip bin; this is Peregrine

  • After a drought of rescues while I have been away on holidays, then always busy with my parents whenever rescue calls came in, finally I was able to attend my first rescue in 6 weeks, followed closely by rescue 2.
I'd almost forgotten how to rescue and what I needed.
Peregrine (from Perry Street) was found in a recycling collection centre, where he had taken up involuntary residence in a large skip bin for metal recycling.
I was pretty sure I could get into it with no real dramas, but getting out was a different matter.
I probably should have brought a ladder, but I was at radiotherapy with my Dad when the call came in, and I couldn't fit a ladder and his wheelchair in the Bitchy McBitchface car, so I winged it and expected the depot to supply any rescue infrastructure I would need.
A small ladder was procured for me, and I had all the minion assistance I required to get my butt safely into and out from the skip.
Perry was just lying in the grunge on the bottom of the bin, totally unhappy about his new accommodation. He was simple to catch, and put up no actual fight. Because I had another rescue to go to, a more complex rescue requiring abseiling 2 storeys down onto a ledge, I dumped off Mr Peregrine on a carer so he could get some attention while I was involved in the other rescue.
He's been transferred to another carer and 48 hours later he is hanging with the boys.
Yay, ya gotta love the survivors.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospit...
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

Well, she started out as the Grey Thing; then Grey Blob, then I called her Leggings because she has no useful pockets. Then after going to QLD and having her try to control my steering and drive me onto the verge because the country roads were so narrow, and because of her micromanagerial behaviour she got the name Bitchy McBitchface, until I give her a visual makeover.
I think I'd call any new car Bitchy McBitchface. I like a manual car and few bells and whistles.

@@tamarrajames3590 Great comments, Tamarra, as per your usual awesomeness!
When I was a child, I was taught that ‘peregrine’ meant Pilgrim or wanderer, (sometimes not by choice!), and I always thought of a wanderer as someone who doesn’t really have a goal or mission in life, whereas, to me, a traveler is someone going to a destination…As a misfit, I’ve been a peregrine all of my life! I’ve always loved that word!
God bless you and your husband, dearly beloved!

@@carolynnunes3922 Thank you for enjoying my comments Carolyn, and for your blessings to my Huaband and I…I just got him back from hospital again last Friday, so good wishing and blessings are always welcome.
You are right, Peregrine can also mean a wanderer…which I too have been many times in my life…and it suits him as well. Sometimes a wanderer is looking for something, but doesn’t yet know what it is…hoping they will recognize it if it crosses their path along the way. It is a bit like the Hero’s journey…helping them find the people who will hold qualities they will need when the challenge is met.
Wishing you and your dear Brother much light and love. You are always so generous and thoughtful of others…a rare gift these days. I feel certain you have said the right thing, or suggested a course of action to many who needed exactly that…and will continue to be guided in doing so.🇨🇦🖤

      Hi Buffy
Are you new to my channel?
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

Hope you get another Lola, maybe a small van so you can carry everything you need for rescues and your parents.

I think Meg intends to give “Bitchy Mcbitchface” a makeover so she becomes better suited to Meg’s needs. Hopefully there is a Lola under that grey paint just waiting to be coaxed out.🖤🇨🇦

Thanks, but I don't want a small van. I want Lola back.
Bitchy McBitchface will just have to do; her main crime is that she's not Lola, and that she can never be Lola.
She's also too micromanagerial with too many bells and whistles.

Lol I'm Meg not Maggie. Maggie doesn't rescue, but Meg does.
Maggie is taking a bit of a break and is going away overseas 3 times in the next 8 months. She might do some baby season helping but it will be minimal.

For clickbait purposes, you may have titled this "Bat rescuer goes dumpster diving." You are the best, Meg. And please elaborate on why you call your new car Bitchy McBitchface. I am sorry that the car disappoints you so much!

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  Год назад +2

Basically Bitchy McBitchface is not Lola, and I just want Lola back.
I suspect all newish cars would be like this. I wanted another manual car but apparently they don't make small manual cars anymore. I don't like all the safety features (obligatory) and the incessant alarms.
I don't like her trying to drive me onto the verge in narrow country roads because she thinks I'm driving too close to the middle of the car.
I've discovered how to switch off this feature, however it has to be done every time I get into the care because it defaults back.
      I don't like being micromanaged.
And I don't like that she calls me fat and offers me a cup of coffee (I don't drink coffee) when she thinks I've been driving for too long. I know if I'm tired, and I'll stop. I don't need her advice.
She puts up 4 icons when I get into the car - 4 seatbelt icons, and the drivers seat icon is bigger than the others. If that's not calling me fat, I don't know what is.

A very handsome guy! In the usual unfortunate situation. Maybe consider a chain link ladder with hooks? Never mind, having a minion to assist is much better. Did your mom and dad get up to tricks while you were gone? Or save up for you? Glad to have you back!

I usually have a stepladder in the car but I need the space for my Dad's wheelchair at the moment.

I did think about that but I think Perry/Peregrine was a bit more dignified.
I had another one in a skip bin who was called Skipper; and another in a building works skip who was called Mudbucket; he was in wet clay-ey soil at the bottom of the skip and so loaded with mud that he was too heavy to fly even if he could have gotten himself out.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  Год назад

I've called one batty in a skip, Skipper. Another, I called Mudbucket. He was covered in mud and could barely crawl, he was so clogged with mud. He also lead a breakout from the carer's bat room, pushing out a screen in the window and taking about 6 batties with him, one of whom was very young and very vocally annoyed with the entire rescue and care scenario.
