This was a change for her. She'd been royalty for several years playing strong, often unlikeable roles. She took this role when fans begged her to play a "nice" girl. She and George Brent had been lovers. (he wanted to marry her) He was also one helluva professional actor and knew how to work with, and, react with his scene partner. He was actually tickling her several times during scenes like this to get a natural reaction.
I read that Bette gave the director of this film nothing but grief as she would come in every morning with a yellow pad and she and Mary Astor proceeded to rewrite practically every scene.
The Brothers Warner went nearly insane trying to tame La Davis; she took no shit, and she took no prisoners. There wasn't too much they could do to her though, other than suspend her every other week during the 30s. A woman of class, spirit and discipline!
Just saw this film I’ve never seen it before it was quite good and I love Mary Esther in it think she deserved the supporting actress role. And of course I love Betty Davis. She’s one of my favorites of course.
*** The story of The Great Lie remember another movie off Bette Davis, called The Old Maid, 1939, in which two women vying for the love of the same man, and married assumes the creation of the child generated by a single mother. As in The Old Maid, the character of Bette Davis (Maggie) exercises his maternal side, and also suffered and sentimental wife, but without missing the services of servants, formed by black actors, led by Oscar-winning (Gone the Wind) Hattie McDaniel. Bette in career peak, after a series of successes, found the silly story, unrealistic and demanded that the role of Mary Astor (Sandra) were strengthened in order to give more substance to the plot Mary Astor was not the first option. They were tested Anna Sten, Sylvia Sidney, Muriel Angelus and Katherine Locke. Whith short hair, daring for the time, Mary Astor was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The actress convinces as cold and sarcastic pianist antagonist Maggie socialite (Bette Davis). In the same year, Astor gain enormous visibility to the classic The Maltese Falcon, alongside Humphrey Borgard.
From imdb, Soundtrack info: Piano Concerto No.1 in B flat minor, Op. 23 Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Excerpts played over opening credits Variations played often as background music
Why do I love the delivery of “do you? I do. Kiss the bride, have some cake”
