    Thank you for revealing this toxic academic culture at Oxford. Very helpful for those of us who are considering even applying to Oxford

    Hey, I just clicked onto this video. I got rejected from Keble for medicine in January, and I was really gutted for a few days. However, since doing some more thinking about Oxford and how intense the study atmosphere seems to be, I am more and more convinced that it wasn't the right place for me.
    I don't think cramming such intense work into shorter terms is any good for anyone's mental health. I have a friend who is a doctor now, she went to Oxford and said that at one point 3 of her closest friends were on anti-depressants because of how burnt out they were feeling. I think lots of people end up applying because we are all fed this narrative of Oxbridge being these 'elite' universities, but I think they're massively overhyped. You can get such good quality education at other Unis around the world, and you know what... you might actually have a good time, and end up liking your subject MORE after you finish!
    Thank you for this video, obviously I never actually got in so can't speculate on how my experience would have been. However, I can say that I want to enjoy my uni experience and cramming ridiculous amounts of work into shortened terms just to take insta pictures on the pretty college lawns doesn't sound like what it's cracked up to be...

      I do have to say, if someone gets through oxbridge with a good degree then you know they can withstand anything - those graduates have gone through a tough process and undoubtedly would pick up so many skills to do a lot of hard work in a short amount of time - which is obviously an aspect employers care about. But I agree with you on so much, people have to do what's best for them and sometimes that's not Oxford and the gruelling environment it has. If you know that's not worth it for you then you can get a good degree at so many other universities :)
      I wish you the best when you start university and I hope you enjoy it !

    Hi Sana, I know this is like a year late haha but I've received an offer for medicine at Worcester and I'm not sure whether to take it (kind of for the reasons you said in this video mainly kind of stress and also the choices on the course). The one thing that's kind of stopping me is the tutorial system. Would you say it makes a significant difference to how you learn (and is worth everything else)?

    • @tis_i_sana
      @tis_i_sana  4 месяца назад +1

      I know some medics in the uni and they find that the tutorial system helps them to actually understand what they are learning. It's a chance to talk to someone who's an expert and can tell you the right things. However one thing to note is that there is a lot of variety on how good tutorials are, depending on the tutors at your college. The tutors at my college for physics are quite bad right now but the medicine ones are great.
      Also, they can be quite stressful as you do have to prepare an essay for each one, however many of the medics say they find that this helps them retain knowledge that might be relevant to their clinical practice in the future!
      The fact that you have an offer means that you are capable enough for the style of teaching here. Your life would probably be easier at a different university however, there's a reason why people would choose to study here. The course at oxford is definitely more detailed than at other universities. You spend a lot more time on the theory and science behind the medicine in the first few years than in clinics compared to other unis. There is also an extra year where you undertake medical research. Of course by the end, you'll also have the relevant clinical knowledge.
      I think the difference is that you have a higher potential of great learning here and if you can utilise that then it will definitely help you in the future. But ultimately I think it depends on the type of person you are and what you're striving for.
      I hope that helps? Well done on your offer!

    HI Sana, did you have to rely on government money to fund your studies and accommodation?

    • @tis_i_sana
      @tis_i_sana  Год назад +3

      Hi! In the UK it's common for everybody to get a student loan for tuition fees from the student loans company (SLC) which is a government owned organisation. Then depending on your household income you can get an extra loan called a maintenance loan which is used to cover your accommodation and living costs! This is what I've done to fund everything :)

    Terrible teaching is common to many, if not most, of the world’s elite institutions for the reasons identified in the video: academics are selected for their research and research potential, not their pedagogical skills.
    Related to that, the reason terms aren’t longer is to give staff more time to do research.
    As for the pressure, it’s as nothing compared to peer institutions in the US such as MIT, CalTech and Stanford where 120-hour weeks are common and 72 hours without sleep because of studying is not unusual.
    And, yes, I graduated from Oxford albeit many years ago.
