I Bought A $500 Ford F150!!! Is It Junk?

- I bought this cheap rusty ford f150 at auction for $500! Its a 2003 with 4x4, and the v6 engine. It only has 37,000 miles on it!! Let's see if it is junk. It needs work for sure, but I think we can put it back on the road.
It may only have 37,000 miles on it but it has like 50,000 hours on the engine from the city workers taking naps in it all day.
It may be rusty but honestly that’s a pretty good truck, I would hate to see it get scrapped.
Waliluigi my friend I spelled ur name wrong😩
would love to se it scrapped

Can u upload a video of this clunker getting crushed at the scrapyard
It might be “low miles” but I would bet money it has a TON of hours judging by the condition. Those state/county trucks dont get driven that many miles, but drive slow speeds and idle a LOT
yeah i bet.
$500 is a great deal still!
@@leeham6230 Oh absolutely is! just giving him a heads up from my experience with state owned fleet vehicles. Definitely a great work/ runaround truck
But they get serviced religiously
My dads truck 2000 f150 xl supercab has under 100,000 but it has problems
What a deal! Just sold a 99 f150 for $1400 2wd with 165k miles. This generation of Ford F150 is very dependable.
I will second that, my dad has a 01 and we’ve only done one oil change, alternator, battery, and brakes. Still chugging along, just the body is falling apart lol.
Don’t the Tritons shoot plugs
@@saltycade9063 Not the 4.2 nor the 4.6, The truck in this video has a 4.2. I have a 4.6, the only main issue was the intake manifolds. Which mine were swapped to aluminum.
Frames practically mint! that's what the rockers on my truck looked like when I first got it.
That’s ironic given the snow shown.
Oh I get it!
The mileage on this truck is amazing. In Alabama, we fight over these with 150k on them and they sell for $5000.00 or more...
Sounds like California as well. Bought one of these with 139,000 miles for $2900 with a V8 and 4x4.
But the body isn't rusted to hell
As a fellow Alabamian, I can 100% vouch. Anything with 4wd is automatically $3000
Same in florda it’s unbelievable 😂
As a mainer, if you find a truck from the 90's you are looking at a bucket full of rust
What an intro! This was a great video. Fun to see the Chevy guy purchase a Ford and have fun with it. It's what its supposed to be for having fun.
Happy to see, that you and Jeb are good friends after the 3 month journey...in Germany many people are no more friends after so a long trip..😉..your new Ford is a great car, when you put the rust away🙂
I cannot believe a 30k mile truck is in that bad of shape up north. There is no way I could deal with that bs. Absolutely thankful I was born in an area that doesn’t have this problem. You guys are awesome just for trying to keep these vehicles in one piece.
I like it, can you repair the rust and mechanical issues including the sills(rockers) ? Being a council truck it should have had a decent service history Id even keep the graphics on it but that's debatable. Great vlog.
I really love how you're getting more and more confident with the content and the camera!
Thanks!

Back in Ohio my father had a 1990 F150 farm truck with the 4.9 straight six & 5 speed manual. He later sold it to my older brother who used it in construction. It topped a quarter million miles before frame rust did her in in 2009.
Man would love that for $500. Nice find.
It moves under its own power...I would say it's not junk. Great intro!!
The issue you were having is you didn’t pop it in neutral when you were trying to put it into 4WD, that makes a big difference. Hope that helps.
I'm 16 and had a tough time finding a truck for under 4k here in Illinois. my dads friend had a friend who was selling his 2000 f150 which is what i ultimately bought. it had 124k miles, was 4x4 with the 4.6 V8 triton, and has cruise control. Truck has some sun fadded paint and a lil hole in my cab corners but its the best truck i found for 4k without 200k miles.
That triton will probably come back and bite ya faster than you can say “oof”. Just my two cents... and about everyone elses.
@@junkers4567 its the 4.6 2v. It shouldn't cause the 4.6 is ok reliable. But would you mind telling me what will come up and bite me?
@@comandermcgarrett7795 the two big ones are the timing chain (its really long and the tensioners are plastic... two things you wouldn’t really want in an engine) and the intake manifold. Intake is an easy fix: Ford came out with an aluminum one, which for about five hundred dollars will probably save you a lot of grief, especially since the alternator is mounted to it. Besides that and an occasional lifter deciding to quit, its an alright engine. I would recommend checking out some forums for fixes and other reported issues, but thats good advice for any vehicle
@@junkers4567 Yeah I knew of these problems. I've had a professional look over it. All mine needs is an exhaust manifold. My intake manifold actual is ok right now. Plus my truck only has 126k on it. But thanks for your advice.

My 98 f150 is stick with the 4.2 v6 and has 310k on it and still runs and drives great. Those are good engines!
I love this gen F150 SO MUCH. They drive really well and feel really solid. All the engines feel good, and the 4.2 V6 surprised the heck out of me when I drove one with that engine. Good power, and pretty peppy.
I drove one for 4 years. 2wd, 4.2 with a 5 speed. I adored that truck.
They look so ugly and cheaply made. 🤢
I'd drive one of these,
I always liked this gen F-150.
It's rusty, but that's ok, it's a 2003, 18 years old in the salt, so I expect that.
Thanks for the video.

i bought a 1994 f150 5.0 XLT for 500 bucks off marketplace. Guy said it was his "trash truck". It had issues but after 100 dollars worth in parts that have never been changed- IAC, TPS, EGR, VSS, this it runs like new with only 128k miles on it and it looks amazing. Changed all the fluids and stuff and it has been currently my work truck and tows my 20ft stingray.
I've been subscribed for a while but just started watching your vids again, keep it up brother
Nice score! I known you're gonna take care of that rust and have it looking good in no time!
I bought my 1998 f-150 4.6 v8 for $1350 back in 2018. 150,000 miles no issues. The old man kept a log of his maintenance work and dated it. Buffed it, fixed the rusted out rocker panels, and put por-15 on the frame. Got it when I was 14, I’m 17 now. Best first vehicle.

@@panthiawhelan3565 Yeah. If you get it on your skin it won’t come off for about 10 days. The shit works though.
I enjoy seeing you fix them up and I'm sure others do as well. Welding painting, etc.
GM guy myself, but have owned all brands with little to no complaints. Had an Expedition that was those years, but the 5.4, can't say anything bad about it, it was rusty in rockers but never let me down, Didn't like the cracked exhaust manifolds, heard horror stories on replacing them but had no issues. Bought it for nothing with a missing cylinder ( OH no, ford spark plug problem) once again had no issues changing the dreaded ford plugs, had a bad coil. Used it as a winter beater for 2 years and sold it for $1000 more than I bought it for. Wouldnt have a problem buying one again, not for my personal transportation, but to fix it up, sure.. Not a fan of any of the new stuff (GM or others) its all got problems, all over-engineered or tyring to squeeze too much out of too small an engine to make 1 more MPG.
I’ve had a lot of fords and I’ve dealt with those transmissions a lot. What I’ve found to work really good is the Lucas transmission fix. Don’t expect it to work a miracle but it will help improve the performance and shift of the trans.
Great content, honest, hardworker and funny. Im glad i found your channel months ago but now am commenting now - takes alot for me to say this " Great work my friend" Until then From Colorado
Well thank ya i appreciate it!
I believe the f150 hoods have that metal stick that hold it up. Thought I saw it when you opened up the hood. Nice find!
You have been born to buy and sell trucks... Thats a gift that keeps on giving... always making good money on your deals cause you always buy cheap guess thats the secret... Great job 💪💪🤘🇵🇹
5.4l 2v in that year truck was a very reliable engine. 3v were toilets.
I had a 2001 F150 Regular cab 4wd 5.4l. That was my favorite truck of all time. The trans finally went out, and wasn't worth a new trans since the cab corners were rotted out.
I've got a '98 F150 XLT, Supercab, short box 2WD...with the lovely 4.6L Triton in it, I know it's Kilometres but she's at 556,000Km on the odometer. Runs damn strong and the chassis still feels solid, doesn't have nearly the red cancer yours does though. Awesome trucks and if you take care of the 4.2 it'll run for a long time and has decent power for what it is.
I like how he picked one of the WORST fords for his first impression
This generation was ugly, but reliable
For 500$, it's a steal!!!
As for the dash lights, You may have ABS sensor issues, which is a common issue on early 2k Ford.
I'm a Ford girl, always have been, but i understand their short comings. It's great that the frame is in good shape and the rust is all in the sheet metal, thats easy fix.
So, check the wiring in and around the wheel well.
Oh and the seats, veeeeery easy to swap em out for single seats from junkyards. Four bolts!
Thing is a beast, I've had a couple and all had 4000000 km when I sold them.
Keep them undercoated and your 👍.

Dude....you got a SMOKING deal!!
Man in wisconsin for $500 i got a clapped out 93 ranger supercab 2WD with 500,000 miles , front end hit a deer and "new" headlights are from a 2010, mounted w black tape & plumbers strap, with 3" deck screws, grill is gutter guard, gas tank held in w ratchet straps, and blew every hose on the way home.
MINT.
Funny thing is, it can sit since lets say October till now when its -15 , and start right up, but its a ranger so the brakes get stuck if it sits more than a few weeks.
I would LOVE to have a full size...auto ( just had knee surgery) and 4X4!!
Thanks for the vid always interesting, you could pop rivet the new rockers then weld them as the weather warms, great find and worth a lot parted out than you paid for it, upwards and onwards. Great find and keep well.
I 100% agree with your Ford statements. The GM gas and diesel trucks of the same generation are a lot more reliable.
The 5.4s weren’t a problem until about 04
Dude the 4.2 was one of the more reliable engines in that gen f150. My mom has an 02 with the 4.2 and it runs flawless. Personally i like the NA v6s for their simplicity. If you arent towing often theyre great engines. The 3.3 in the newer f150 and the 3.6 in Dodge are very reliable base engines.
In Northwest Florida, this truck would sell for $5000 at auction.... and then be posted for sale again for $8000.
I honestly believe that every truck has their positives and negatives, Im a die hard Ford fan, but I’ve still bought, and driven a Chevy, and currently drive a Toyota Tacoma. The 5.4 gets a bad name because people run the oil for 10,000 miles without changing it, and run it like they stole it, the 6.0 diesel is actually a great engine if you do the oil cooler upgrade, my girlfriends father is still running a 6.0 completely stock, with only the oil cooler upgrade at 250,000 miles. He hasn’t done head gaskets, or any major repairs to it. Still gets in and it fires up for him. I think dodge definitely has some rust problems, and trans problems, but you’ll still
Find die hard fans.
Yes I did like the donuts, and sliding on the ice. That's what $500 truck is best for. *Fun stuff.* 👍😎
Nice doing donuts. Good looking truck. Had this body style of Ford with the 4.6 V8. Really
Enjoyed it too.😊
So I worked for the State of PA from 2013-2017. My assigned state vehicle for my first 3 years on the job was a 2003 F150 that appears to be the same fleet vehicle specs as what you bought. I started driving it with around 85K miles and it went to auction around 135K. Not high miles by any means but the rust became an issue for PA safety inspection. I was not kind to that 4.2 and automatic transmission with 4x4 (as I recall that engine/trans plus 4x4 was only available to fleet buyers - the 4.2 and 4x4 only went to civilians with a stick shift) but it got the job done. For a while I had to crawl under the front end to manually disengage the front axle as the vacuum front end engagement wasn't working right. Absolutely slow as hell but could get up to 80mph but gas mileage for a V6 was worse than the V8 F150s (newer vintage) in the office. Regardless I never had a mechanical failure that stranded me and in my job for PA I was offroad all the time on mine sites and wilderness areas. I recall that when the vehicle went to auction it only fetched about $1200 but there was rust and many dents in the body. It didn't make sense to me to have any of that fixed with state money when the cab corners were rusted - but I had that vehicle on some very steep slopes - I'm amazed the frame didn't crack but it held and from your video the frame looks to be in good condition. And yes, that bench seat (in the PA vehicle it was vinyl) was the most uncomfortable I have experienced outside of a DoD HMMVW. I enjoyed seeing another fleet spec F150 from that vintage though thank you!
Glad to see Fords getting attention
Youll love that 4.2! Ive owned 2 and hated myself both times i sold em! Both were cluster swapped before i got them: my 97 showed 118k and found service records for 386k with no issues! The second showed 267 and ran flawless.
I have a truck like this at work, same engine and all and I really like it! Really wish I could have one of my own! Though I do like the V8 better!

Those 4.2s are actually pretty good engines. They can last a pretty dang long time. Still doubt they're as good as the 4.6s though
This is a miracle truck. We need an investigation (just kidding, there won't be one) into how a truck can go 18 years in salty VT winters (is it from VT?) and still drive. Was it repaired several times over the years? What a homerun design the 97-04 F150s were, a breakthrough in modern design, still looks contemporary today, incredible rust proofing from factory.
I had the 2003 5.4, (same body/era as your truck) you got an amazing deal. My truck was at 150k at purchase, I sold it with 220k miles and was still strong. Didn’t know they made a v6!!!!
Yeah it's not worth it tho. It's only 200 hp and 250 lb ft. And it's not fuel efficient either

With how clean the frame is, definitely worth it to do those rockers in my opinion.
Trucks of that year with 200K-300K are going for going for 7K-12K in Florida. I do not know how much a cab and bed would cost but a new cab and bed would really make that truck a sweet deal.

New England weather is either shitty and cold or shitty wet and cold
That's why it's called "New England" because our weather is shitty too.
Nice deal on that truck overall! Crazy it doesn't even have a tac. Def seems like a poverty spec model. Wild it actually has a bench seat like that too. Not sure if that's the same engine and transmission combo the legendary 2002-2005 Ford Exploder had, but those transmissions were the main issue. Engine only a problem if it's the dual timing chain type with high miles. Hopefully the trans doesn't give up!
Insane something can rust that bad in less than 40K miles. Always makes me laugh when people say Subarus rust bad. Takes 15+ years and 150K+ miles for them to get anywhere near this bad in my extensive experience. Meanwhile seems like all trucks like to try to return to the Earth in 5 years up here, hahaha. The truth is, everything up here rusts. Some worse than others, but people also have biases.
I say give it some quick rockers and use it as an excuse to buy a better welder and gas that gets paid for by the profits. :D
Thanks! Yea trucks rust big time, all brands. I gave the trans a service and she feels like new again. Quick rockers and flip asap is the plan lol

Correct me if i'm wrong, But isn't 1 gear up to 15 mph, 2 gear 30 mph, and D drive is your regular driving gear. So if he was driving in 2 gear doing 75 mph, you may have some damage
Frame looking good. Just put some rockers and cheap fender flares and it's a great plow truck.
My theory is The F Ceres, might be on the more popular Trucks but they are the most traded in Trucks on the road.
Since most people only keep them for a year or so, or until the warranty runs out.
Case in point or my neighbours gets a brand new F150 every year, only keeps it for a year then trades it in.
Not bad. Take those decals off, give it a good cleaning (use some acid on those wheels) and try to do a little rust repair and you could make a a decent profit.
Also...just because it has low miles, the fluids can actually become bad from age, so the trans fluid may be bad or dirty from sitting...but crazy to think its 20 years old, makes me feel old.

Id check wiring for corrosion on transfer case actuator selector also there is 4wd module behind radio atleast on ford ranger model known act up need replaced also
Clean the transfer case shift bushing they get filled with dirt and when the low range light comes on it won't shift right it's just the sensor or connection nothing to do with transmission.
I had a 2002 f150 with the 4.2.L v6 . Loved the truck but it had a lean code and it was the crossover pipe which at the time I thought it was expensive.
I think the sensor that detects what range you are in is what’s causing the 4 low light on. Also all fords from this era like going up to 55 and will drink like an alcoholic above 65.
Fords (at least ones I've owned.... 1998, 2000, 2003, etc) like to be in neutral before shifting t case.
?
I think if you invest in fixing the rot properly, you could turn a very good profit.
i had a 2001 expedition with the 5.4 v8, it was great, gas mileage suck, but like it
Impressive find. That rust though. Nice profit for the channel
The 4.2 Essex v6 is a really good engine. The only thing they lack is power lol I've had a few. There a little more torky when there hitched to a manual.
I’ve never heard of the 5.4L being a bad engine. The 5.4L 3valve where some of the most sought after gas engines for a while. Also the 6.0’s are very good engines if you have the money to fix there two major problems.
How is an engine with 2 major issues a good engine? I expect at least 200k out of an engine before needing any internal repair.
@@dannykelly3617 chevy has the same problem with the 6.2
The 3 valve had an issue with cam phaser oiling filters and the 2 valve spit spark plugs. Both issues can be addressed.
Based on the fun you were having at 0:00 I would say it was worth the purchase and not junk. I don't even need to finish the video even though I will
Bought a 99 with the 4.6 for $400 a couple years ago. Still driving it
Bought a former Indianapolis DPW truck once, 72000 miles. Most exspensive truck I ever owner but all the repairs were the result of the poor work DPWs mechanics had done for some reason. Like removing the brace on the starter which caused the mounting bolts to break of in the block. Stupid stuff they did.
Late 90s early 2000s werent good years for ford trucks after the 7.3 diesels were retired. They got a lot better once they ditched the 5.4 tritons.
I had one and I abused it daily. It didn’t quit til 225k. Same exact truck just no 4x4.
another great video. still curious on the low range. thank you for posting
*Lots of older trucks have locking hubs*
I'm surprised a 4x4 existed on the 4.2L V6 engines. My '06 F150 XL LB did not have 4x4 and Ford didn't make them with it then I don't think. 4.2L V6 are VERY underrated engines.
