I feel like the little girls who grew up playing silly DS games made for little girls have all grown up and are making their own games and were getting a renaissance of these kind of games right now.
I want more whimsical games. It’s kind of a case that can be made for all media. I generally prefer animation and graphic novels over other media because of the departure from reality. I am consuming media to escape reality, I want the media to be as far from reality as possible.
This might as well be an ad for Sticky Business because I went from legitimately having zero interest in it prior to this episode to immediately downloading it on Steam, wallet be darned. Well played.
I feel validated cause I’ve been trying to find games that click with me for ages and I played the sticky business demo and felt like I enjoyed it more than I should for a sticker game. And when I wanted to buy some games, the first one I bought was sticky business despite feeling like I was wasting my money on a stupid game. And then it was the game I enjoyed the most out of the three I bought. It’s really simple but it’s that silly creativity and cute colors and having freedom to create but a structured business, it’s so good
I'm so happy whenever I see another person who loves those games. Ham-Hams Unite and Ham-Ham Heartbreak to this day remain some of my favorite games of all time.
Silly is so underrated. I have SO much nostalgia for the silly and unexplainable games my sister and I grew up playing. (Ham-Ham Games, Petz Cats 2, the Humongous Entertainment games, anything LEGO...) Truly iconic, joyfully silly stuff. I hope to help make something like that someday... ❤❤❤
honestly, for me, silly, low stakes, gameplay/mechanics focused [as opposed to story focused, which is still good!] games are my personal jam. 50+ hour games with huge storylines and mountains of dialogue are great, but they're a bit draining for me to play [silly brain shenanigans, sometimes treats video game dialogue like actual interaction and drains itself reading it]. i like my easy thrills and distractions i've been loving the happy home paradise dlc for acnh [..bit late to the party, i know], partly because i used to love happy home designer back in the day, and partly because of the simple fact that the low stakes, repetitive gameplay style of designing homes is very fun! no stress, no big story you have to indulge yourself in to truly enjoy it, just decorating homes, over and over and over again. when i want to seek out those kinds of experiences, i typically go for old ds [and 3ds!] games, adobe flash games [flash isnt dead! ...to me], and pico 8 games. (3)ds games like picross ds, style savvy, the previously mentioned HHD, and cooking mama are great for simple "i just need to do *something* fun!" pick up and play type stuff. flash games are an amazing trip down memory lane and again, plain fun [even the flash games you dont have any memories attached to are a blast! i love just going through internet archive and finding random .swfs]. and pico 8 games are super-cute, super-tiny, super-silly experiences [my personal favorite is mellow 2. you're literally just a tiny little bunny collecting flowers over and over again, endlessly] sorry, i've practically just been rambling at this point lol. great video!

i feel like so many games recently have tried to be evil and twisted with dark stories for people to make theory videos on, its so refreshing to play games that are just cute with silly graphics. ive always been SO obsessed with the style savvy games since i can remember, i played that shit for hours as a kid and i still do now. the amount of alternative fashion in it makes me so happy, i could sit and make lolita coords for customers with dramatic life stories until i die
My ideal whimsical game would be something that combines the customizable aspects of ACNH, the task and crafting system of my sims (wii), the exploration and foraging aspects of BOTW (dialed down because that world is massive), and the social/romance, farming/ranching, and mining aspects of harvest moon/story of seasons games. A story that is not time sensitive, but still present in some capacity. Being able to choose who moves into the world, who yo befriend, and who to date. Decorating your town and having a personal style. Making money. Exploration. I don't know I just think it'd be so fun.

'Am I dead' is the perfect, cozy, gorgeous, silly game, and I would urge everyone to play it. If you watch salem, play it!! If you are salem, play it!! It's a lovely story, and it's a nice change of pace from the grind and simarity of farming sims that the cozy game genere has been dominated by 💗😚
seeing footage of Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams reminds me of some of those Bomberman series spin offs that where just silly and filled with minigames that had _absolutely nothing_ to do with bombing things, you where just exploring, having fun and talking with the other silly characters xd

Hello Kitty Big City Dreams mentioned!!! It's one of my favorite DS games ever, I've never heard anyone talk about it before :D Silly games like Hello Kitty Big City Dreams, Xia Xia, Pinkie Pie's Party, Mr Driller, etc, always offered a safe space away from conflict that more linear and serious games just didn't for me. I'm not much of a gamer, but when I do play a game, its to have a nice little space where everything will be ok. Thank you for touching on this genre of games. :>

There's *something* that they put into the simple rhythm games and collecting systems that makes me want to do it over and over. There's sparkly joy in every aspect of those, from gameplay to art direction, honestly.

I've learned so much from this video and will have to check out some of the titles you've recommended! this is so real. it speaks to me especially as a adult-diagnosed adhder. i play longform narrative games when i want to (and have the energy to) engage with something bigger than myself. i play nintendogs when i want to relax and get some easy dopamine.
Ran into this after i found out about sticky business, I'm glad to hear there were others out there who loved those DS minigames to death. Been getting into emulation for some old games I had a lot of nostalgia for + archiving some silly shovelware from the Gamestop discount case, this video has been a great motivator to preserve and celebrate these kinda experiences. This video resonated so much. I've recently picked Stardew back up but playing it so much more lax than how my other save files. I love intense games, but my cortisol levels are too high sometimes that I literally just need a stupid game that occupies my time and brain for a little.

I vastly appreciate the call in to fo4 in this discussion because I feel as though many 20-somethings Fallout players grew up with these pattern based, cozy experiences. I myself have near 200 hours on my current save, yet logging in to do a few quests, selling the same items I grinded for over and over, building up my little house and hanging out with my settlers, and leaving to go on a collectathon is the exact same gameplay loop I derived from New Leaf on my old 3ds. Fast traveling and the 3ds/Cartridge clocks allow for this sequence breaking where you can take actions on-demand- something I've never felt pressured to do in a silly game. The routine provided by longer experiences can definitely be comforting, but in play-as-you-choose titles, the magic can easily be lost behind arbitration of the story or of demands you can cheat the clock for. Style Savvy rings a bit closer to this kind of pick-up-and-giggle experience, so maybe my adulthood is the best time to give those titles another spin. You made a well executed essay ^^
Tomodachi Life is such a great silly game I'd definitely recommend if you didn't try it out yet! I desperately yearn for a new entry in the series to see my silly Miis have their own little dramas :3
One of my favourite games when i was a kid was on my 3ds and i cant remember the name but the plot was essentially that you take over this fashion boutique from your uncle and now you have to chose clothes for customers, thats basically it from what i remember lol
There is a sort of switch version of Nintendogs:D its called little friends and you can get cats too, tbh ive never played Nintendogs but it seems like an extremely similar game based on the game play ive seen and heard of(was watching on tv but switched to phone so i could comment this lol)
Kind of surprised the Frog Detective games didn't get any mention in this game. They are very silly little games about a frog detective solving...the games call them cases I guess? But it's mainly just meeting goofy little critters and putting together the mystery. Wattam would probably also fall into the silly games category. It is the current game by the guy who make Katamari Damaci. Which is also a very silly game. An Airport For Aliens Currently Run By Dogs also comes to mind but that might actually just be weird instead of silly. Lil Gator Game was in the video so it probably doesn't need a shoutout but still. Smushi Come Home is very much in the same ballpark as Lil Gator Game. Mr. Suns Hatbox is silly but at the same time pretty hard so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a silly game in this context.
Coffee Talk almost hit this mark for me but with disabilities related to reading the dialogue was overwhelming at times and the endless mode got a little boring.
