I'm late to the party, but better late than never.
I have been riding for nearly 3 years now.
From a Yamaha YBR-125 to a Suzuki GSX600F to my current Harley Iron 883.
Not once in my 3 years have *any* of my insurers every asked to see my restriction certificate.
I've been with Rampdale, Hastings Direct, Devitt, Performance Direct and The Post Office.
They have all asked to see my license, entitlements, proof of no claims and all the usual crap; but not once have they asked to see proof my bike was restricted.
Now that's not to say all insurers do it, but I guess the real problem is they will never be able to prove or disprove it without seeing it for themselves. I think the only real opportunity they will ever get to do that is when you crash and make a claim; most insurers will want to inspect the bike... You know... To find a reason not to pay out. They don't say it but that is what they are doing. And if they don't find your throttle restrictor, your throttle body restrictor, your air inlet restrictor or your ECG restrictor then you're screwed.
Of course as you state early in the video there is no law stating you must have proof the bike is restricted, but good luck with that excuse when your insurer refuses to pay out or when the police tow your bike.
I have genuinely seen it happen before, a police officer who knows what he is talking about will have the bike at the drop of a hat.
Nice young lad riding a GSXR600 SRAD on his A2, came off on a 90degree bend into a ditch, he went to A&E and left the bike at the side of the road to come back and get it later. Police turned up and called for recovery due to where it was left. Owner and dad turned up to take the bike at the same time the Police recovery did. After about 15 minutes of arguing the bike was taken due to the lad on the bike not being able to prove it was restricted and that he was licensed to ride it.
Turned out he couldn't legally ride the bike anyway; it was a 2001 model which cannot be restricted to 47bhp as it is over the 94bhp limit.
The point of the matter is simple:
It's very easy to get away with not restricting your bike, but if you get caught then you are screwed.

Amen. This video is all about the con artists that might strip you of money to get you to pay for something that isn't required by law. It is 100% illegal to ride on an A2 license without the bike being fit to be categorised as an A2 standard vehicle. It's important that we all ride safe and as legal as possible!

@@oioisharpy the SRAD at one point was a huge grey area within the A2 license. As either Suzuki claimed the wheel bhp of the bike on release or they claimed way more than the bike actually made. I can't remember. All I know is that the SRAD used to be a grey area but now the have decided it is illegal to ride one

Hey, I can see you have the 2003 onwards SV650, what type of restrictor do you have for it? Could you give me a link if possible?
    Thanks

Hey Levente, thanks for coming to the channel! This video's way old and I can't remember which one I got exactly, just that it was a fuel restricted, just a small change that limited the speed of flow

id recommend a throttle restriction its the easiest one to install. you basically pull off the airbox mount the small plate on which restricts your throttle body linkage from fully opening

You would need a certificate if doing test on the bike in question though ?

    I've got a sv650s fully faired too :p
I bought a 33bhp ecu off eBay and my instructor let me photo copy his cert and I just put in my details instead lol.
like you though I also done a tonne of research and it's all bs! also you can legally restrict a motorcycle yourself, but then how do you get a valid certificate?? lol it's all a bit silly :D

It's when you get nicked and they believe it ain't restricted, they'll seize it and test it themselves

It’s such a pain as the bike I want on my A2 only needs to be restricted by like 8% it’s like head butting a wall do i ignore it or do I put an new pipe on it with out a tune I don’t know it puts me off over all

Same , my prob is am 45 and can take A test but gonna use my own bike an nc700x which is listed as one of many bikes can use on gov site, but is over 35kw so would need to be limited cos is 38kw :-/ but doesn't say that on site , so is 51 bhp need 54bhp for A test so although I'm of age I gotta take the a2 which is fine by me but now to do that I gotta restrict it , or maybe not ? waiting for dvsa get back to me , am sure will say needs restricting , at first the woman told me I can do A cos she asked wot CC it was which is 700c (660cc on v5) and said yes you can take A test , was only when I asked about kws , she said oh , and now they checking with the main guys and get back to me , but If hadn't checked I would have bought thinking I can use , so she was wrong , so yeah is not powerful enough or A licence and too powerful for A2 :-/

I have a question. I got an A licence in Greece in 2019 but i don't have a bike yet. I am looking to buy one now in Germany but some people told me that i have to restrict the bike to 48bhp for 2 years before i can actually drive a bike with more than 48bhp. Does anyone now if that's true?

I'm 17 nearly 18 I'd like to get my hands on a srad 1999 600 or zxr400 2005 should I bother restricting or will they actually check.im good with bikes so the restrictor will be coming off as Soon as possible

What do you feel comfortable with? I won't recommend that you break the law, but they don't and won't check - unless if you have an accident.

//Sharpy I know i shouldn't break the law but I doubt I'll have an accident and my bike will be old so I won't get fuck all from insurance if it was valid still and restricting some makes the bike run terrible

@@liam-lh2nm it's your bike dude, totally up to you! But what you gotta think is that regardless of whether your insurance company won't pay a lot out, if they notify the police you could lose your license. Don't crash!

    • @liam-lh2nm
      @liam-lh2nm 5 лет назад

//Sharpy true but if you have an accident on a bike you aren't likely to get away to ride for a while anyway and I could get throttle restriction as it's better for the engine as messing with the carb means really you should rejet and mess about to make it run smoothly which I would hate to do as it's practically destroying your bike to then ride which I'd hate. I'm probably getting prosecuted anyway as I got reported on my 50 for something I can't remember what 😂😂
