Passengers must also leave their feet on the footrests at the traffic lights. Under no circumstances should they let their legs dangle.

A guy down the street from me bought his first motorcycle it was a big heavy cc Harley. I noticed he was driving it around the block over and over again, so I walk down my driveway and offered a kind word and a few tips... realizing he didn’t have very much experience I told him to check this channel out....I gave him my number and said if he had any questions to call me....two days later he called me and said that this channel saved his life and he didn’t realize how much he didn’t know and couldn’t do...I’m so glad I was able to help and once again thankyou so much for sharing your knowledge.

And this is exactly why you don't get a Harley as a first bike. Your ego says "yeah sure I can handle it and I'll look cool". Reality says "you're an idiot and it's only a matter of time until you crash, hurt yourself and damage a good bike".

I have one more tip that i learned the hard way: Tell the passenger to squeeze the legs together when breaking, especially on bikes with a high passenger seats. I had a passenger slide up my back once because he didn't lock his knees in. Momentum goes both forward and up for the passenger, as the hands on the tank are lower than center mass usually. Doing white belt and blue belt with the passenger before you go on the road is a great tip, and that would have prevented that incident. I'll definitely do that next time I take a passenger.

This topic was so needed, I searched and searched when I first wanted to take a passenger, and asked more experienced riders but in the end had to figure it out myself - but it was a very uncomfortable road for both me and my passengers. Thanks, you’re most useful video to date, because riders at this stage are just left to their own devices. Bravo

I'm so close to riding, I'm glad you came out with this video! You helped me successfully do my first test ride on my dream bike (Yamaha MT-07)....no one went with me and it was my first time riding in traffic and I was nervous but I just repeated everything you and Dan have been preaching and made sure to keep my head and eyes up to go where I wanna go. I came back safely after driving around in pretty congested traffic for almost an hour and a half (before lockdown in Burleson, TX) thanks to you!

I would add just a few more little things:
1) Instruct passenger when it is safe to change their sitting position. It is often that passenger waits until you slow down to adjust their sitting. I had many hard times while slowing before junctions or filtering traffic.
2) On longer trips, encourage passenger to use their own grips (if bike is equipped with ones) as they will have better view and wan't stress their necks so much since they usually just grab you and tilt their heads to one side and just stay like this. Adjust your speed accordingly at least on first few miles to build their trust!
3) Go easy on clutch and try to change gears more smoothly (both up and down). You will know if you are doing it bad when passenger hits your head with theirs :)
4) Consider any type of intercom if you plan to ride together. Being able to talk while riding is not only great fun but also increase your safety. You can always tell your passenger when to expect a bump, acceleration, breaking, or when it is safe to wiggle around and adjust seating position.
5) Progress with speed of ride. Let your passenger adjust to what is happening around them. Soon they will start to enjoy more aggressive rides. Just give them some time!

Great video Greg. While watching I couldn't help but think back 40 years ago when I first started riding. My dad wanted to go for a ride and since I didn't have the benefit of your instructional vids back in this days I took him. Once again an awesome video !! I started worrying about the responsibility of taking a passenger with me on the bike , even before taking my basic motorcycle riding licence/course 2 years ago. We were practicing with a friend before the test so I asked him if it was ok with him to jump on my bike as a passenger to give me the chance to practice the weave , emergency braking etc with a passenger. Needless to say I did the same for him afterwards. It's really important to have buddies with the right mindset , who pay attention to skill and safety.

The others already know everything so they "do not need to watch these stupid videos because I have been riding for XX years... and could teach this young punk something....". Those I don't ride with anymore. They also scare the crap out of me for their lives and their families.
Another great vid! I like the way you have an actual passengers take on it, not just the rider's thoughts. I've taken passengers for a while now and it's pretty natural anymore but I do the same exercises in getting on and off every time. We both ATGATT and we've both really enjoyed our rides.

I just started practicing with passenger after 1 year. My arms were completely gassed. 2nd try was way better. Couldn't believe how much of a variable it would be. Going to practice more on my own and practice more on a lot with passenger on weekends. This video really helped thank you.

Great video again. It's so easy to think people know what to do. Bikes have changed a lot since I started (in the '70s) and not always for the good. Back in the day they had long, low one piece seats with low footrests. Pretty easy for a pillion passenger to get on or off. As your video shows, the pillion has a hell of a climb to get on, then sits on a half an A4 piece of paper like triangle of a seat with their knees in their eye sockets! Usually no rails, centre strap or handles to hold onto. Keep everything smooth. When my partner first got on the back of my Aprilia RSV1000RR she later commented that it was like being on a rocket; I didn't tell her I was accelerating about half the rate I usually do. One thing I suggest to riders who want to take a pillion is to put the bike on the centre or side stand and then try to get on the pillion seat as if they were the passenger while I sit as the rider. It makes you think!

Great tips here - and thanks for posting the passenger’s viewpoint: the point about the passenger wearing protective gear is an important one. It applies to the rider also - show that you value your passenger by making sure they’re wearing the right gear.

I can't believe there aren't as many vids on how to take passengers as they should be. Many thanks for the tips, useful as always (I found myself saying the very same things, especially the "stay neutral" part). I'm still a new rider and as of my personal rule, I didn't want to take any passenger with me before I had at least 3 months of driving, after 1 month I had already 2k km, so I ended up willing to take a passenger in at the 2nd month or little bit over it (managed to make over 5k km and adjusted all settings to best fit my hands, throttle gap, clutch slack which is very important if you don t have a big hand). Also having the passenger pushing up against the gas tank while breaking is actually a big help that I didn't think of just yet. Thanks again :)

you're definitely saving my and others life. I don't ride a bike yet, but I'm starting my basic course for riding 125cc (probably a KTM Duke 125) in the next few days. Though my older cousin is already riding a Kawasaki Z125. Today he asked me if I would ride with him as a passenger to visit a medieval festival. He said he could take passengers with him, because he did it one time and "it wouldn't be a difference to riding alone"... And he has been riding for just 2 weeks! Furthermore I even couldn't have worn a protected jacket or protected pants to atleast save my life when crashing. A few days ago I asked him how often he is practicing emergency braking; his answer: "Never, I know how to emergency brake from beginner course: Just immediately grab the front- and step on the rear brake because ABS is activated." (He said that even though he fell when emergency braking on a Duke with an ABS in beginner course...) To conclude, my cousin is way too over-confident and I'm pretty sure he does many other mistakes. I am so glad my father recommended your channel to me, so I can learn from you. Though I haven't ridden a motorcycle yet, I know atleast a bit how to theoretically approach to riding and about different situations. After I got my bike I will get your book and "shut up and practice" ;) Of course I will share your videos with my cousin - hopefully he realizes that he is yet a beginner at motorcycling and should rather practice in a parking lot than just driving on the street.
Sadly many are like that....over confident and can't actually ride.

A fun little challenge from my passenger riding experiences was trying to shift as smoothly as possible. With a passenger you really get instant feedback if you screw up your throttle control. Every time your helmets bob together just view it as your mistake in regards to throttle control. You will be amazed what a little attention to rolling off the throttle will do!
Yes! I try to make the passenger think the bike is automatic :)
Great video as usual, I have to to honest, growing up on a farm I did it completely backwards. The first time we rode a motorcycle it was with a passenger. Mates on brother had to jump on there was no option, surprising when you don't know anything else is becomes second nature very quickly.

Thanks. Ridden with passengers often but not on my 930lb Road Glide Ultra. 700lb Fat Boy was easy and all my sport bikes, but not this one. Took a bit to develop the motor skills to begin with for 930lbs. I strapped a 60lb bag of concrete mix on the passenger seat and rode LOL. It worked, I developed the motor skills to handle that in a few hrs. Next is another 60lb bag on top of that and with the large Tour Pak seat back will be able to get the 2nd bag on easily. Will practice with that and then take live persons!

As a man who is somewhat fond of my man parts, please, oh please, put your hands on the tank when I'm breaking, especially if we are riding a sportbike. I can't count the number of times I've gotten off the bike, after riding a passenger, and as they see the look of pain on my face they ask, "Are you ok?" Being a man, I suck it up and reply, "I'm fine," in a voice that is an octave or two higher than normal.

A story from my training course instructor. He was taking his skinny 10 year old daughter on her first ride. She was instructed on what to do and not do. She panicked in the first lean of the bike and countered his lean. He did not realize how a less than 60 pound kid could throw
the bike off so badly.
On the lighter side. My buddy bungees his wife to the backrest of their bike because she falls asleep all the time and would flops to one side or the other. He got pulled over at gun point by the police because they thought she was drugged and he was kidnapping her. LOL

ATGATT👍....I've got thousands of miles riding with a pillion. Albeit on a Harley tourer, now that I've picked up a sport bike, the dynamics are different. There is a learning curve, p/lot practice 1st is best advice!👍

Its not very efficient if you overload your passenger with too much information, specially if its a beginner, but I do set a few rules when I take someone for the first time and they are similar to your video: only think on going in or out of the bike if I have both feet on the ground and both hands on the handlebar, always put the hand on my shoulder first to let me know and do it with a fluid movement, no jumping; always keep both feet on the passenger pegs and legs closed with some pressure (this is quite important in fact, I had someone lifting his feet when going across water on the road, another putting his feet over the exhaust pipe); keep an active relaxed posture, anticipate braking/acceleration to avoid helmet bumping but NEVER anticipate body leaning before a curve, either no leaning or just flow with my body movement (I had a few leaning to the opposite side :-) And then when I start riding with a new passenger I do some "testing" at slow speed, a few curves, to check on their reactions and if necessary I stop and brief them again. And its quite fun in fact to feel that they are gaining confidence and flowing better and the heavy weight at the beginning disappears.

As a newbie I can only say: try and encourage your passenger to ask any question they may have. I've only been a passenger with people I trust (duh) and I'm not shy to ask "what's this?" or "where does my hand go?", but maybe if you're insecure, you might think it's something you're supposed to know. And what rider doesn't love talking about the bike anyway, so they won't mind.

I leave my H-D Street Glide Special on the jiffy stand. Once the passenger mounts up, I stand the bike up and ride away. I have found this to be much more stable than trying to balance the bike with the input of the passenger. I also hold the front brake and keep the bike in gear. Ride safe!

G'day great Yoda instructor :D Personally I prefer to always have the kickstand down and bars turned as though it was parked when the wife gets on. First step is asking permission to board the boat, (H-D Road King Special) She holds the left grip, and my right shoulder and throws the leg over. Kickstand then goes up and I easily move the bars to the right and put the bike upright. You don't need any muscle to do this as you 'turn' the bars, there is no leaning required at all. Was shown this by a H-D rider with many many years experience. Same when she gets off. Always stand down, holds the left grip. If you have a big bike you don't want to juggle the weight of the bike on your arm strength. That is a recipe for disaster.
Maybe this isn't needed for a sport bike, not sure the weight of that nice bike you had. This was a fantastic video by the way; good comms and prep is the key. Before I take my wife out on a ride I always head to a parking lot and do some figure eights, turns and some slow speed stops to just get us both mentally prepared. Hello Dan or M.J. Thank you for saying exactly what needs to be said, about how you should ride. People that I've seen on RUclips and on the road are stupid anyone who doesn't listen to sound advice like you try to get through to people. Putting the blame on others on the road when you're going like a bat out of hell is stupid you have to see everyone on the road as stupid and watching out for yourself is how you should ride. Taking courses as you recommend in your RUclips programs are the best advice I've ever heard. A good saying is. If you skip SCHOOL TO LOOK COOL, THEN YOU ARE THE FOOL.

I've never taken a pillion on my R3, but I did go pillion on my boyfriend's Triumph Daytona R a few months due to surgery on my ankle. He always taps me on the thigh when he needs to accelerate quickly. Just a quick tap, but it's my cue to hang on tighter!

New rider here. This will be my 3rd season. I've taken basic and one advanced class. I can now do slow speed manoeuvres in parking lots and some fairly tight U turns on my BMW R1200 CLC. I am only now getting ready to put my wife on the back of the motorcycle. I've got about 2200 miles of experience. We are going to take our time and communicate. Thanks for posting this informative video. As you already know, there are people who have a lot of riding experience, yet, they do not have the safety knowledge you and others like you have been (i.e. MCrider, Jerry Palladino, etc..) advocating for many years now. How do you feel about those who "preach" do as I say not do as I do? For example, I live next door to a couple who ride together on a large Harley not wearing any protective gear, and after having a few conversations with them, they have expressed a "I have been riding for many years, I 'll never have an accident" mentality . They only have taken a basic MSF course just to get their motorcycle endorsement and have never taken another course. They see me wearing my gear and look at me as I am crazy and wasting my time with the protective gear. Your thoughts...😏
You're welcome. Those people have an 8th grade education and they're very limited in their knowledge, skill, and understanding which will cause them not to be able to handle situations. I don't care about those people, nor do they care about me. I don't worry about the 10% of people who aren't watching my videos anyway.

My old lady just started riding with me (I’ve got a good bit of experience but am a reentry rider .. 15 years dry spell not by choice. Put down prob 5k miles in the last 3-4 months so I’ve been riding with the missus some)
She has experience riding as a pillion on sport bikes but not big ass cruisers where the passenger is more prone to just chill.. on a sport bike as a passenger you’re pretty much forced to hold on against the driver based on ergos. Took a bit to get her to understand thjngs that she may have not known to do… like hold on bc u never know when we may need to duck out of a dodgy situation and I can’t be worrying about making sure she holds on them evade something.
I put a backrest on.. I’ve always had one before .. current bike didn’t come with one. At least I have that extra later of safety.
Riding with a passenger is the highest responsibility someone can have IMO. They literally have their life in our hands. It’s not to be taken lightly and I think some passengers just don’t get it.
She’s gotten a lot better tho as a passenger. U get to learn each other and about ones own riding more .. but as U said.. adding a passenger compounds alreay existing rider deficiencies

I keep my pillion seat covered so no one tries to two up. You would not believe how many people want to just jump on the bike behind me.

I have a question:
I am a rather new rider and havent taken anyone as a passenger yet, thing is that i dont flat foot the bike and usually i just lean it to the left while my right foot is on the brake.
Maybe i am overthinking it, but how should i go about stopping at red lights with a passenger? i feel that if he decides to lean to the right slightly i might loose my balance and not be able to switch to my right foot on time.

I'm glad to hear it! Make sure there's no change you'll ever fall over..meaning you really need to know what you're doing...and when you decide to practice, don't go out on the public roads...go to a parking lot and make sure you tell the passenger not to move around.
