Great vid, I like to say I go to swinley Forrest often but need to go more. You made it look a lot smoother than some of the trails are and there are also some more knarlier trials with mainly roots etc.
Toxik FluidZ Thanks , it’s all about the gimbal ! It can make the roughest of sections look flat as a pancake! 😂. I hope the video might encourage you to get out on the bike soon! 👍🏼
Maaaate, this is where I grew up! No real trails back then. Used to ride the Gulley jumps at swinley on the ol' hardtail back in the day. So many memories. Loved the vid. Subbbed!
Nice, Thanks Howie! Someone was saying while we were there how good those jumps were, hopefully the unmarked DH tracks are cleared as they were sweeeet!
Ah the infamous gully! :D . RIP. Flattened due to accident stats (though it wasn't particularly technical). The failed freeride zone was supposed to make it easier to get ambulances too! Flattened now due to over ambition and no progression. Really was for the few though and didn't fit the audience of Swinley.
@@TimMoore1 from what I remember swinley always used to be good riding back in the day but wasnt waymarked. Was a case of find someone in the know to lead you to the good stuff, so different now although some goodies still hidden away. There used to be a run down a dirt bank with a gap at the bottom then a 4ft drop a little ways after that, mate shattered his wrist on that and then rode back to the car park. Still like it though, although need to be on the pedals to get the most out of it for sure.
I go there a lot as its the nearest trails to West London. Youre right about it not being particularly difficult for experienced riders but i dont think its suitable for 'families' . I come across families with kids about 500 yards into the blue trail deciding its too bumpy and too uphill for the kids. As you said, its relentless on the legs!
Good stuff. Swinley's good for keeping your fitness up throughout the winter but you're right when you say it's lacking anything that'll challenge anything other than a beginner. It's on the crown estate and their insurance dictates how gnarly the trails can be. The example of the no-helmet-hero at 35 seconds in is a perfect example of why the freeride area to the left of the fire road after the first section and the freeride gully have been decommissioned. It is designed to be a family orientated trail centre but unfortunately that does tend to lure people into a false sense of security. The amount of people I see riding Argos £99 specials without helmets at Swinley is scary and that flint hard packed into the soil can be pretty brutal on bare skin. Still, Swinley could really do with a techie-skills section.
woodsmccloud i think you’ve hit the nail on the head there...... 👍🏼 its a real shame the amount of work that went into the freeride area only for it to be left un ridden..... 😖
Matt Wilson Yeah that bit and the mini dh section are the best bits...... they have added a new skills section too since this was filmed but I think you have to pay extra to access it...?
Nice video, good mtb park, just with sings small problems, been here twice, and a lot of people get lost, because of missing sings, let's say you ride on track 17 and straight after number 20, people get confused where ir disappeared couple tracks, but otherwise is nice place, recommend to all.
There's a lot more hidden unofficial stuff there that you've missed out on plus the closed trails are a lot of fun, ie babymaker, shame you missed them.
neatheys we were gutted that the trails were closed . Must be loads of secrets hidden away! Maybe get back there sometime and go exploring further......
The stuff is open again and Babymaker has just had a refresh and running really nice, plus plans to do more improvement work around that part (known as Clubhouse), with more fun and features, freeride stuff etc. That'll all be official stuff. There is much more to Swinley, though "off piste" is frowned upon by CE for insurance and SSSI reasons (the reason why the official trails were done in 2013), though the ginger and cobbles really is hard going and a bit meh.
Thanks Elaine, I don't know that area at all i'm afraid. i get the impression that there isn't much. You do have Aston Hill and Surrey Hills nearby which would probably be your best shout ( and Swinley of coarse)
Monica Axson Thanks, Yes defiantly. It’s very beginner friendly with almost all the trails being aimed at beginner to intermediate riders. Start on the green or the blue trail and then work your way onto the red which is effectively a longer version of the blue. 👍
I went last week and these were the first trails I've ridden. The blue is very easy going and slowly gets more difficult, which is nice for confidence. The red is more fun but the downhill section is quite scary if you're new (I think it starts at red 15)
Philip Howson yeah, it is a lovely bike although now I wish I had gone with something with a bit more travel. Great bike for the money ...... I’m still on standard tyres after 2 years!!
I did think about going 150mm, but it's enough for me at the moment. I think I will change to a 1x11 and chain guide at some point though. I always seem to lose the chain (it mostly just needs shortening a bit i think), but I think 1x11 is generally the way forwards anyway.
Philip Howson yeah you are right, 140 is perfect for places like swinley but venues like Surrey hills/wales could do with a bit more travel. I had the same problem with the chain and have converted to 1x11, never had that problem since. Quite pricey to convert though🤑
Yeah, waiting to wear out the existing drivetrain a bit more :-) . Did you need to change the freehub? I am guessing an 11 speed cassette should fit right on?
Cpyder_ I don’t think there is a huge amount around Oxford tbh .... I get the impression Swinley is the best localish place. Have you checked out trail forks yet? It’s a great app with loads of local trail info
Michal S The trails are free but you will need to pay for parking..... try and lift share if possible as there is not a huge amount of parking and it usually costs a few quid....👍
The easiest is the green or the blue. If you like to send it then the red will more than likely be ok too. It's fairly mellow but a longer/better version of the blue. Enjoy
@@samb2334 looks like your best bet outside of the trails you mentioned would be Wharncliff and the Peak district. Check out trailforks to find more trails, but it looks like you will have to travel to get to the good stuff!
