This whole section of the tour has a storyline, this song is her scaping from church and the good behavior, the next song is going crazy with sex, then she has a lover which gave her hell and she wants revenge, then she's in trouble and remembers her dad's preaching, the she goes to purgatory, then she managed to survive and comes back from death with no regrets. All in 5 and a half songs.
This might be random but those platforms that are going up and down during the song were the first of its kind to be in a live show. As well as the largest led screens at the time that were used in a tour. They have since been used of course by people like Katy Perry in the witness tour etc. but Madonna always tries to innovate in every way she can and do something fresh and new. She was 54 here and KILLING it. I do suggest continuing this show in order. There’s a whole storyline to the show. It’s divided into 4 sections; Transgression, Prophecy, Masculine/Feminine, and Redemption. Madonna said she wanted to tell a story about the journey of a soul from darkness to light.

MADONNA always incorporates her faith and religion in all her performances… she teaches you about religion in a way you can adapt to it without it being shoved in your face…she mixes various religions basically showing we all believe in the same power of light… Madonna will give you every religion in her shows… she lets you make up your mind what you learn from it…. She just presents it to you….. Madonna always gave her body to her shows with dance and stunts… she put her body through it over the years as a performer… she had a hip replacement a few years ago in which she isn’t able to dance like she use too… Like Micheal Jackson and Prince who both as well had bodily injury damage from all the dancing and stunts in their younger days… Madonna gave her soul on stage to entertain the world… and at her age she doesn’t have to dance like she use too… she proved herself already… now she battles the pain from years of it… so when people judge her for not dancing like she was in her 20’s … let her be… and the swinging bell was what the church uses with incense to bless everyone in the church
The name Madonna (which everyone thought was a stage name, but is actually her given name) has for centuries been used to refer to the Virgin Mary. It carries a lot of weight. She grew up in a very strict Catholic household and it certainly shaped her in many ways. But traditionally, its a very dogmatic and patriarchal religion, which caused her to ask "why is it like this?" A question that usually went unanswered. This caused her to rebel against it at a young age, and she still is. Catholicism is also very ritualistic (as with the incense as you mentioned) and the art and iconography of it is very beautiful, and can also be rather frightening (as in the winged gargoyle-like creatures in this performance...representing the temptation of sin and the punishment of hell. And the cross itself is one of the most universally recognized images in the world. It's immediately familiar yet it still grabs your attention. I think that's one reason it appears so much in her work.
The Queen! This intro is simply perfection! You should react to Revolver, the next song, which is awesome and Gang Bang. This tour rocks, I saw it live in Brazil, great memories.
This was one of her best tours for production value, i saw this concert in los Angeles and it was one of my favorites concert tours.... She was raised catholic but has had a love hate relationship with the religion and always questions the churches dogma through her art. She has been called out by the catholic church many times for being blasphemous.
The MDNA your also has a story line, where she is first inside religion, trapped in something "dark" and has the show evolves, she passes from human life, sex, addicion and ends with light (and then a party)

She's not "religious" so to speak like you think. She's had personal beef with the Catholic Church since a teenager . The church has excommunicated her twice; the Vatican. Lol . Religious imagery is amazing to use in many ways because it can speak for many things.
Went to see this show, she was hours late which isn’t unusual for her, total disrespect for her fans, would never pay to see her live again, one of my greatest disappointments.
its hard to get a feel for whats happening since M insists on turning her concert videos into ridiculously overproduced affairs. the entire beginning of the show on a conceptual level is ruined in this dvd release. i personally hated this tour, but you would have understood what was happening during the whole intro if not for all the jump cuts etc... but as always you give great reaction to Madonna's work!
