    There is nothing more subjective than what sounds "good". I think you're all crazy. On top of that, I don't even give a shit if you like my gear or not. Who cares. These vids are great because you can get at least of an idea of what these sound like before you purchase. And the way a cymbal sounds alone in the basement or in a music store with no musicians playing is 100% different when you bring it to the bandstand, so keep that in mind.

      When compared to the extra dry cymbals they do sound a bit bright. But if you were to stack them up against some pure alloys or heavy traditional they definitely would sound darker, comparatively speaking.

    I don’t understand the current trend with huge hi hats. I mean I’ve used some 15” k lights for a little while now, but 16? 18?? I prefer 13s or 14s, but then again I do a lot of studio work. Can’t imagine these 16 or 18 inchers would sound good anywhere but on their own. That being said, nice video 👍🏼

    • @kevinbothwell8425
      @kevinbothwell8425 2 года назад

      I do quite a bit of recording myself and find that (generally) larger hats have a lower fundamental pitch and are actually a bit easier to control in an overall mix. But style also comes into play here. If I needed a super controlled and cutting count I’d definitely go for a more tradition 13 or 14 inch set. Which is why I have a pair of the 16 inch extra dry hats and plan on buying a pair of 14 inch pure alloys.

    Not to hate on you, my man, you’re a great drummer, but I hate extra dry cymbals so much. To me it sounds like you’re hitting a piece of paper, it’s pathetic. You can play what you want, but this is just my opinion. They sound like broken cymbals. Now people are gonna say “ohhh expand your horizons, they’re good for different styles, blah blah blah.” Trust me, I’ve been drumming for years and I know what good cymbals sound like and I know what cymbals should be used correctly for what music. To each their own, but Meinl in general for me just sounds cheap and/or broken. I don’t see what everyone finds so good about these. If you can give me one good reason, anyone, then have a shot.

      I can try hahaha! The first Byzance I tried made me fall in love with this serie. I tried Zildjians, Sabians and Paiste, but never found the versatility I needed and that the Byzance Series could give me. But it's really a matter of feeling and I cannot roast you for not feeling cymbals the same way. But well, I will certainly agree with you about the Extra Dry series. I just cannot enjoy thoses cymbals, they lack of definition and they are a bit too dry for me, I would go more with the Dark serie that is a bit more wet.
      But hey, let's be positive! The 18" thin crash is great and you can make great cymbal stacks with their splashes. Moreover, they can be good with funky stuff.

      I don't agree. There are different opinions out there for sure, and I can see that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but this immense amount of hate surrounding them annoys me a lot. I think there are a lot of styles which they fit really well in, and they're not that kind of overpowering, ringy cymbals. I especially love these hi-hats, because they can support the groove so nicely, and they've got a whole lot of articulation. And that doesn't mean, that I hate traditional or brilliant hats, there are a plenty of them which I really like, I just think these particular ones would fit my playing style the best. By the way I really appreciate your work, but I just can't stand these kind of argument-less, hateful comments. Cheers

      LanceCampeau definetly agree with you when it comes to the crash splash and hats !! I think they seem to be more for the guys worried about looks !! I think nowadays some of these endorsed artists try and get cute and reinvent the wheel !!! Now when it comes to the ride dry rides work well in big band and jazz and are great for that style ! I also really like the dry chinas not so bright and ear piercing makes for a nice accent !! Hey lance i miss your cymbal project still catching up on old episodes !! Hope your well thanks

      AJ Glick exactly. Play what you like. If you don’t like dry hats then buy and play non dry hats. Simple as that. If everyone had the same hi hat sound that would be boring af. I used to not like dry hats until I got into meinl years ago and their 14 inch medium extra dry medium hats are my favorite hats ever. I play in a metal band so I use the 15 inch traditional medium hats for shows but any other smaller venue or in the practice room I always use the extra dry medium hats or the sand hats. The traditionals to me are the most versatile hats I’ve ever played tho. Super dynamic but also cuts through any band or any kinda loud music. They don’t get super annoying loud when u bash the side of them but still great stick definition and chick and sound great played loud or soft. The sand hats are super versatile and amazing as well.

      It's sure that the Extra Dry series and all theses cymbals with holes are kinda very popular for taste reasons I guess. But I do not think it overtook the industry, I mean, you still have a lot of great cymbals in the Byzance series that are still very reasonant and balanced. You talked about the trad, but the Vintage Sand Series or the Dark Series. I like the Dark Series because it's dry, but not too much.
