my style is cheap
@mikebalko what kit do you have bro? Most basic kits are around 1000$. You got a good deal!
@mikebalko if you can't tell the difference, honestly i dont think your listing right, there is a big difference in sound and quality of the shell, comparing a cheap vs mid to high range kit or cymbals.
Most seasoned professionals will all say the same thing. Now if you have good technique etc you can make a tin can sound a million bucks...but a mid to high end kit can't make a drummer sound a million bucks, trust your ears.
@mikebalko lmao...ok..you will understand one day.... all I have to say is trust your ears. What do all us pros Play on?? Not a $1000 kit that's for sure. Yeh sure you can buy a 1000 kit with good heads and it will sound sweet. But still there's nothing like quality shells, heads etc. Hell if you have good technique you can make a Tin Can sound good. And Really you don't have to justify to yourself and others about why you can only afford or play a cheaper kit or that there is no different in sound anyway, so I would only buy a cheaper kit etc etc. Waste of money, the list goes on.
@mikebalko omg dude....you have no idea do you, and you paid much less than a grand for probably something you cant even play yet, well done bud...me prove what that your out to disrespect people on what thay pay, making out its some type of stereotype hype, yeh mate the drummer is the dumbest member of the band you sure have outdone yourself there. Mate grow up your probably 15 acting like you know shit about what your talking about, and as for marketing its about the quality of the product, yeh sure like i said you can make a cheap kit sound sweet its been proven, your technique is most important, again someone with good technique dynamics etc etc can play on anything....probably some troll that gets off stirring the pot.... listen to guy...😅
@mikebalko now im pissing myself😅😅😅......do what you will, i leave it there for your discretion.....happy days.
Those Byzance Sand hats are so nice sounding
MrGrantly so crisp and dry sounding. best hi hats on the market in my opinion.
I hate my set.
I am truly an idiot, I legitimately thought that it meant choosing a hat that goes on your head to suit a genre
As long as you go with a high hat you're all set.
lmao
If you laughed about yourself, you were not an idiot...
Lmao
@@Nowhy good advice to live by.
I've really enjoyed this drum series. Thanks, Jessica!
Paiste Signatures are very versatile cymbals in general. I've been playing the 14" Dark Crisp Hats for years and years now, and I never really felt the need to get something else because I just love the sound *so much*
Same here, they somehow sound great for jazz, metal and everything in between.
Christopher My dad let me borrow a pair of those and I really liked them. Paiste makes great hi hats, though I don't particularly like their other cymbals.
Great drumming, great video series. Thank you!
I recently got the Zildjian S MasterSound hats. I'm very happy with them, great sound, and great price.
What a great demo! Very informative. Thanks!
Yes Jessica thanks for the advice! 🙌🏽
That beyerdynamic M160 over the hats is excellent. It records acoustic guitar really well too.
I play deathmetal and 50s pop any recommendations?
Lol. I know you're joking, but as she said you could just get a pair of A series like the new beats. They're suited for anything, as they're pretty much the og
@@jensharald9091 it can be years since I last played New Beats, yet every time I do, they sound damn good!
A's have been used on so many hits they probably sound like home to most people
Beau Buras hell I’ve used my new beats and a sweet ride for just about any genre of music I play. You can’t go wrong with either one
I use my sweet ride for everything. I only have One other ride and it's very pingy, like glass, and i just use that if we're getting REALLY heavy and loud, and the sweet ride would inevitably get lost. Very rarely need it.
My hihats are equally versatile. Not New Beats, but K Custom Hybrid. Love them to death ..
Great vid. Love my 15in 2002 SE hats
Classic Rock: Paiste 2002 15" Sound Edge Hi-Hats
Vintage Rock: Avedis Zildjian 14” Vintage Hi-Hats
Punk Metal: New Beat Zildjian 15” HI-Hats
Jazz: Istanbul Agop 14” Traditional Light Hi Hats
Funk and Fusion: Meinl Byzance 14” Vintage Sand Hats
Great info ! Thank you :D Great playing :D Represent ! :D
For playing surf music I use a Paiste 602 sound edge bottom and a UFIP Kashian (from the 80's) top.
I really love these videos
I have zildjian master's right now I've been trying to find a good video on the new beats I play classic rock and I believe that you answered my question, looks like I'm going to get a set of new beats they sound so crisp and fresh 👍 thanks
My go-tos are 13" Zildjian A/Z hats (A top, Z bottom, basically an extreme version of New Beats). Great articulation, a little higher tone so they cut over a band, and a great wash/swish.
Excellent clip!
that snare was kinda killer
yeah, can anyone id?
@@mooselessness 5x14 Ludwig acrolite black galaxy
Very good video, thank you!
Definitely good info to chew on. Thnx
reverb back with a very helpful video
Those Agop's were lovely.
I just moved from an e-kit to an actual kit and this is a great guide! Very concise and clear! I appreciate the recommendations and alternatives.
I picked up some Meinl Rakes with my secondhand kit and struggled to articulate what I didn’t like about them. Swapped to some secondhand New Beats and it’s exactly what I wanted to hear.
Good choice! An e-kit never can fully substitute the sound and feel of a "real" one, although the electronic sounds are very good nowadays. Check out Paiste 505 medium hats if you are searching for a classic sound and inexpensive solution.
CYBERBAND / LEIPZIG JAMS I grabbed a 16” Zildjian A Series medium thin crash and love it. I kind of want the 18” version too as my second crash. I also a 21” A series ride, which was a huge jump up from the cheap 16” I had.
@@anonymousforensic Sounds way better than the Meinl Rakers I assume ... Suitable cymbals aren't easy to find, but once you now which direction you like and which you don't at least the search gets a little more focussed. I mostly play relatively light Super Zyns (18" and 20") from England which I really love and which are incredibly versatile cymbals. For the real heavy stuff (mostly recordings situations) I switch to 20" Sabian Flange Ride and 19" Sabian Medium Light Crash. Super Instruments!
CYBERBAND / LEIPZIG JAMS I’ll check those out! It’s been a fun gear journey so far.
Excellent!
Don't forget the cracking cymbal sound. So sweet. So bittersweet.
honestly, I really love the raw quality of the Meinl Byzance for almost anything, but for metal in particular.
Hope to be able to afford something like that someday..
I got some 14" Bosphorus silver series hi hats straight from the factory, they're incredible
It's so interesting!
Very informative. As a new drummer I've been wondering about the difference between the hats. I'm getting interested in jazz so I'm going to research some of those suggestions. Many thanks.
Don't bother about “genre specific.” Pay a visit at your local drum shop and play everything they have and choose what you think sounds good instead.
Maurice Harvey almost any zildjian k or a hi hat pair will be perfect. any k zildjian pair, most a zildjian pairs and most k custom pairs.
Give the Murat Diril Mosaic hats a look - the kit I play on at school for my private lessons has those right now and they’re actually awesome jazz hats
Im into the Paiste Giant Beat 15's for everything.
Sabian aax and hhx. Used them in several genres and have been great for all!
Pair of 1971 Ziljian A 14" with four rivets in the bottom cymbal.
and a pair of Paiste Signature power hats 14"
K Custom Hybrid Hi-Hats work really well for funk/fusion as well.
I don’t think I’ve ever played the hi hats from the line, but my general experience with K Custom Hybrid is that it’s Zildjian’s weakest line
From my experience/musical preference, I’d say the hats are the only worthy cymbals from that series. Quite versatile, suitable for a variety of musical styles. In contrast, the bigger cymbals are way too noisy and don’t cut through the mix as much as I would like.
My favourite hats are the ones that I have, dough, trashy and heavy... Istanbul Mehmet Onuhran, Zultan F5 and Anatolian signature Ricardo G. I play pop and rock and have sold a 2002 and AAX set for those... The only way to understand what Is for you Is to listen to more cymbals than you can...and in the end you will surprised there are better sounding cymbals than the most famous one and at a better price...my suggestion Is to look to B20 handmade cymbals made by small Turkish companies.
Very cool vídeo. 😃
Personally, choosing a ride is more important than choosing hats. I had some sabian pro sonix hats and 'upgraded' to some more expensive cymbals but I preferred the pro sonix, and was happy to have a few extra quid back
No love for 13” hats? I love my 90’s sabian hh eq hats.
It's not the trend at the moment. Everything's going bigger and thinner. And for a reason. The 13" are bright and cutting while everyone seems focused on keeping the hats down in the mix.
I agree, I've got an older 90's pair of Zildjian K 13's that are my favorite hats ever. Super articulate and controllable, without sounding too harsh. Personally I never liked large hats. I just find them too sloppy. Same with the "sound edge" stuff.... not a clean sound, and it tends to produce a kind of hollow tone I dislike. Give me a nice set of 13's any day.... it's totally possible to find 13's that aren't too harsh, for the vast majority of applications.
Thank you :)
I just purchased some new hihats to replace my budget Meinl hats...I bought the Zeldjian New Beats 15"..I wanted the Paiste 2002 but they were on back order until Oct on Sweetwater..
I play multiple genres of music. So 14” hi hats and 15” hi hats are perfect for many genres of music like rock, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, and country.
I play death metal, fusion and some bebop with my mastersound avedis and never had any complaints
Very informative
She has great technique... makes me want to start practicing rudiments and sticking again ughhh.
She does, and her feel is also awesome: when she switched from the open hats to the closed on the New Beats, it was so smooth and sweet. Really nice playing.
She should loosen up those fingers though! Pretty tight grip.
I love Meinl and Paiste cymbals.
Gorgeous
For 1920s/30s Jazz/Swing they used really small hi hats at the time. Its one thing many bands trying to do those sounds get wrong and given the importance of hi hats in early Jazz it makes a big difference to the sound!
Anders that’s a great observation!
How small are we talking?
@@lt-yx1hx I'm not a drummer but from what I understand in early jazz e.g. up to the late 1920s most cymbals were small and splashy. E.g. the catlog of the popular Zildjian cymbals from 1925 lists 8-16 inches but nothing bigger. Its not till the 30s that bigger cymbals get more popular.
In terms of hi-hats the original hi-hats (invented in the 20s) were like 8' ... its not till the 1930s that this evolves.
neat article here:www.moderndrummer.com/article/february-march-1982-the-evolution-of-the-drum-set-part-two/
In other words. For hi-hats and cymbals the basic kit in the 1920s and early 30s is pretty different to now - worth some attention if thats the style you are trying to plat!
Great video! But it should be made clear that most hi-hats can cross genres. New Beats are mostly used in rock/pop, for example in Coldplay and K Lights can be even used in Hardcore and Metalcore, just look at Beartooth and Architects.
She literally said "they're very versatile cymbals which can be used in any genre". Not sure what else you wanted.
I love you, Jessica ❤️😍😘
Not all heroes wear capes. A video i was looking for some time now. But i tried a few and will be going with sabian x-celerators.
You won't regret it! They're awesome!
I play 10 inch zildjian hats,,, they click and swish great
I like B8 hats... They usually have a nice crisp "pop" to them which I like.
I'm impressed by the performance
Cool.
Really good video love it.
The funny thing is that I still stick with my 40$ Meinl HCS Hi-Hats. They are cheap but they are useable.
I have them since seven years right noe
14" K Zildjian
fave.
last genre also can be played with sabian groove hats
That swing pattern though
Evan Miles exactly what I was thinking lmao
Meh.
Where does the Meinl Classic Custom Dark series figure - they have 15" & 14" hi hats . They also have trash series among the classic custom dark cymbals
A Customs all the way 💪🔥😁
Paiste Rude is the best cymbal for punk/rock/metal, but if you dont like Paiste, you could choose Sabians HHX.
14" Istanbul AGOP sounded the swishiest.
Good good
Play both ZiIndian Mastersound 14s & Byzance Sand hatz...covers most anything. Occasionally break out Zildjian 14s from 72 vintage just to really appreciate the new stuff. Cherish those J H starters from long ago. Ok, TMI...
Paiste 2002 15 inch and Zildjian New beat high hats for me thank you! 🙂❤
Are used 14 inch Sabian AA regular hi-hats for just about all the music I play
Oh, mentioning a Dream hi-hat
Avedis is pronounced 'avid-dis' with a soft "i" sound. But great video.
Love you jessica! Big hug from argentina
Jessica Burdeaux you officially my fav drum now
K Constantinople top with a New Beat bottom ... the KC’s have a dark, washy top and the NB bottom is a major third higher in pitch and bright.
My hi-hat was 600$ rip. I like the sound of trap hi-hats, and to get the sound I want cost some money.
haha
What hihat did you get?
Drummers, what’s your current cymbal set up?
What about hip hop drumming? (Questlove,Q-Tip etc.)
Definately choose jazzy cymbals! I would dampen those with different materials and use old, broken cymbals as stacks. In general lofi- and dirty/dry sounds are the way to go. Be creative and have fun :)
Nice playing. I really wanted to know also which hats are good for reggae?
Great thanks a lot, which HH Would you use for ACDC Cover ?
Zildjian A
im actually married to TR909 hi hat sounds, so thanks guys
Personally, I like for all of my cymbals to be bright and 'crispy' :D
Debra Lynn Paxton check out pst7 hi hats m8, especially the thin ones. They’re super crispy
@@LanceWillMakeIt Thank you for that info :D
Zildjian S Rock or A Customs
A bit disappointed sabian wasn’t mentioned more as they have the equivalent to most of these hats and only mentioned once or twice
A lot of good companies didn't get a lot of time. How long do you want the video to be? Anything over 5 minutes is already testing attention spans.
Also on that note…Sabian and Zildjian cymbals have little to no difference in sound. Due to the fact that it’s the same family, and the same family metallurgical recipe. AND I feel it’s worth noting, that since the Zildjian family are the oldest American manufacturers of cymbals, they (Zildjian and Sabian) are very generic sounding, mass produced instruments. I don’t mean any disrespect by this comment, they have some very great sounding and greatly appreciated products, and also some very lousy ones as well. I’d also like to add, that Meinl has grown by leaps and bounds in their product offerings. And yes, they also are a large manufacturer of instruments, however they have really been active in product development, making some of the broadest ranges of cymbals for musicians to choose a particular cymbal, or cymbals, to suit the tastes, and genres of drummers. Also, todays drummers have the opportunity to choose cymbals from many small cymbal-smiths, or small companies dedicated to producing some amazing sounding instruments. I for one, have been fortunate to find a company out of South Carolina, Saluda Cymbals, which I have been using their cymbals exclusively with all of my drum kits. They have been very helpful in custom producing, by hand, in B20 every cymbals sound and size that I have been wanting/needing for all of my kits. They also look great! And, I know that their are other smaller companies out there that deserve to be mentioned in these types of product review videos. But, unfortunately they’re not getting that attention, because Reverb is being paid by the ‘Big 4’ cymbal manufacturers (Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, & Paiste), to promote their products. So, with that being said, I think every drummer, or musician owes it to themselves to research what other options are out there, and try out various cymbals, to determine what ‘sounds’, ‘looks’, and ‘feels’ right for you. There is no rule in art that says what’s right, or what’s wrong. Cheers!
she rules
😍
Kerope’s all day long.
What about Country?
Hi. The mic looks like Beyerdynamic.. Can i learn the model of the mic.. Thanks..
beyerdynamic m160, nice ribbon mic
enparticular thank you ✌
hi hats with holessssssss
Sheesh those sand hats tho
@1:11
If I watch no more of this video I will settle at it being a success because of the pun.
I had no idea how expensive hats were
Whatever Vinnie Calautti plays is what I like...
Hey Spyder (Lol!)
Vinnie plays the PAISTE 15"
Formula 602 Modern Essential.
What about gospel?
Too bad, I play different genres but I only have money for one good hihat :(
Therefore I only use allround cymbals leaning towards jazzy cymbals. They will still work for rock/metal but loud, bright and pingy metal-rides will never work for jazz. Just my 2cents
Revisit that new beat section...
Zildjian 15 K Sweet hi hats are a beast and theyll fit in with any style
Paiste pst7 are very versatile and not very expensive. Great entry level to intermediate level hi hats. They don't sound like cheap hats. Even if you're advanced these hats will suits any needs. For a little upgrade, the avedis series from zildjian are great!
Beautiful drummer, i fall in love with all the hats, she is like a magic girl that blossom everything she touches
Sand hats all the way!
the reason all sound great are because of Beyerdynamic M160 as the mic
These are all very expensive cymbals... the best cheap hats are the ZHT mastersound! Best cheap ride is the dream vintage bliss.
im fell in love oh my god
So. What about latin music?
pans
What kind of snare is that?
Looks like an '80s vintage Ludwig Acrolite. An aluminum student drum.
