- April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and to celebrate this Professor Roger Barker (Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge), recorded a talk for Abcam on the current and future landscape of Parkinson’s disease treatment. Professor Barker explains where we are with research in 2019 and how our understanding of the disease has progressed, before exploring emerging trends and therapies.
Emerging trends discussed include the role of alpha-synuclein and how this remains a growing area of focus, drug repurposing, providing ‘fertilizer’ to dopamine cells such as in the GDNF trials, stem cell-derived dopamine replacement, and gene therapy.

FIRST STEP: a UPDRS test, a push test with video, a walking and turning test with video, a talking test with video and possibly a writing test with video, standing from seated on hard back chair video with your arms crossed. These videos are kept on file to be used for comparison with future videos. This is a fairly accurate means of documenting improvements over time as it is actually fairly easy for some people to not realize how much they have improved over time.

Thank you for posting this video. I was diagnosed June last year. Symptoms mild at thos stage. I still have not truly came to terms with it but this video has given me hope.

Damnit! I _KNEW_ it was behaving like prion!!!! I was formally diagnosed in about a dozen years ago, at the age of 42. YOPD hasn't been my friend, although it is my constant companion, and as such it is my responsibility to introducct it around . Mostof my friends and acquaintances have never seen anybody with PArkinson's in person orup close. Including me, before or since. So far in my life I have only ever met 1 other person who has it and his is also young onset, so, it's a "Cafe Disease" and highly customised to each paient.SO, we chatted for along time and found that theonly thing we actually had in common was the name of the illness that is trying to kill us both. However, Ii the midst of a bovine encephalitis outbreak which has affected the whitetail deer in our region, there has been a fair bit about it in the news and had read about prions causing "mad cow". So , I am relieved that it's not triggered by an actual prion, just a rogue protien that does really good impersonation.

Parkinson disease is a very terrible illness, my Dad suffered from it for 19 years until we finally got a help and a medicine that truly works that helped treat, cure and reversed all his symptoms. My Dad is well again.
Professor Barker, I notice you did not mention DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) as it doesn't pertain to the business model at abcam. Likewise, what I want to mention is not strictly speaking in your bailiwick however it's certainly well within your skill set to assess. DBS is EMF (electromagnetic fields). And a biological effect IS a biological effect. The protein α-synuclein is impacted by EMF. Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) is impacted by EMF. A cell's calcium, wildly so. EMF opens the BBB. EMF stimulates glial cells and also inhibits glial phagocytosis. There are countless intersections. EMF is seemingly implicated in cause, co-promotion and as accelerant of PD. Would you be able to put me in touch with anyone, anywhere, who may care?

Thank you for your comment. Given the complexity of the research and treatment landscape, the video aims to give an overview of aspects of Parkinson’s disease only. There are many exciting areas being explored to help address this disease and groups like Parkinson’s UK (www.parkinsons.org.uk) have a breadth of knowledge and could be a good group to contact to discuss EMF in more detail.
