#MarkKnopfler
Mark Knopfler may be the most famous person I’ve shaken hands with. Today is his 72nd birthday and I just read he’s working on a new album. Can’t wait!
Speedway at Nazareth starts out like a gentle country tune but transforms into a blizzard of musical genius. I remember seeing it live before hearing the album it’s from. It was cool, but when the second part kicks in, I was blown away.
That time I met him. I was invited backstage as I’d worked with Guy Fletcher. He showed us into a cantina, offered us beer and we sat down talking. Mark came in, Guy told him I was the one that had done that film they’d been talking about. “Oh, great! Hi, I’m Mark,” he said. As if I didn’t know. As if anyone wouldn’t know. He was calm, composed, friendly and had an aura of greatness. But then, this is the man behind Dire Straits. Don’t know if great people have this aura or if they develop it. Whatever it is, he has it.
Mark was then on his merry way, but we were joined by the drummer, Danny Cummings. A fantastic fun, he was. Totally love him.
All in all, a down to earth band, great people and mind blowing musicians.
Cool story !
Thank you for sharing!
❤
Danny Cummings on drums is absolutely insane on this track. Could listen to this 24/7 Awesome piece of music.

Music at kits best
Absolutely agree !! What a big O 🤩💫🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸💓❤️
I feel if they stopped Danny would run over them with they drums Excellent work, just brilliant 👍
Very powerful drumming indeed. Absolutely love it!!
I don't think I've ever seen a more on point live version of a song ever. I have watched this more than anything else on RUclips. Mark Knopfler is simply the greatest musician you could ever wish to see.
Checkout the Black'n'White version from The Albert Hall. Blows this one away IMHO

true, I like Emmy , but not quite sure why she is there
@@stuarth43 Because she and Mark recorded the All The Roadrunning album and this is a tour promoting it.
Agree -- I love Sailing Away, I love this track especially, but I come back to this clip again and again. I think Emmylou's harmonies and simple strums add a little je ne sais quoi!
One of the best songs ever written.
I agree
BE AWARE FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!!
This clip contain musical perfection across all instruments and participants
SMOkin speedway at nazerith
Emmylou is just playbacking on guitar.
It's "beware".
Pristine audio...
05:18 seems a bit irritating...
I know nothing about guitar, so I started to love Mark Knopfler firstly as a songwriter and storyteller. But here the guitar is part of the storytelling. Can you imagine if we just had the lyrics-focused first half of the song? It would end with just "at the speedway at Nazareth I made no mistake." And you would think, "Good, but is that all the detail we're getting?" The instrumental fills in the rest of the details - the speed, tension, and exultation of the race at Nazareth. It tells you the whole thing. It's brilliant.
Unourite 👍
Is it possible to die from too many Goosebumps because I have them constantly from the beginning to the ending of this song!
I feel the same.
I just love this. It builds in a fantastic way.
If your circulation goes and you freeze yes.......sorry
No one else builds a song up like Mark Knopfler. In my humble opinion the best guitarist ever.
For the drummer to stand out in this company tells you how good he is.
The harmony of MK's guitar solo and the other musicians is a kind of magic...it's addictive.
Gotta have more....give me more....Habit forming stuff, for sure...Long Live MK.....
That is what a lifetime of practise and growth with talent, willpower and passion sounds like. It's a most precious thing.
This song is a masterpiece in my opinion!
Dude, you haven't heard half of Mark Knopfler's works lol
I have to admit tho that this particular song is a perfect marriage in collaboration with Emmylou Harris.
It trully is one of my favourite recordings!
After the split up of Dire Straits into more recent years Mark has been seeking more and more contemplative music and sought into directions of the south (Country music, South America, South Europe,...) .. as if at the same time going boing back and expanding to his his starting years - playing in pubs - paired with everything he's learned AS WELL as respecting both the origin as the search of the origin of music styles AND with one eye on the reverance of the value of history!!
At least that is what I have perceived it and I am one of the people who's loved his music even more because of that.
Mark Knopfler's music has found ground, decided to grow, found succes and is ripening even further like fine wine! and I am LOVING IT.
Mark Knopfler to me is a true icon in mine and (imho) modern musicial history.
Bravo Mark and Emmi 😊❤😅😅
Yeah it is
@@Rain-Dirt well said
When Mark staffs his band it is not enough to be good. It is even not enough to be very good or simply great. Mark only chooses the best! Everybody is locked in completely. Everybody listens and looks to the other musicians. This is perfection
Mbphg
Thank you
Altrimenti non sarebbe il lider della band!!
Well here we go again, Mr Knopfler is a genius, those who say he isn't and there's not many if any, must be deaf, this is beyond magnificent.
Respect and admiration to you Mark, and long may you reign ❤️
I was the one who turned off the stop and go lights for the tunnel into Nazareth Speedway for the last time after there final Indy race. When. I listen to this song I swear I can smell the rubber from the race cars!!
I'm just happy it's a real place.
I thought Mark was talking about a dead man in heaven in the lat verse.
When MK takes the first note, everything is magically and there is no tomorrow ■□□■
Flawless. Mark plays effortlessly and conducts his band like the maestro he is. Everyone is synced perfectly and they move to a crescendo that brings tears to the eyes. What a remarkable performance. Have watched it now countless times.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
Tears to the eyes? Indeed!
Thank you. I agree as a musician
You took the words right out of my mouth - Thank´s!
And the drummer is fantastic
Lost my dad (a life long fan of Mark) to covid a couple of months ago and this song he would have loved.
The build shows marks skill to perfection and Danny on drums is a machine.
I wish we could have listened to this together dad. 💔
Bless you. I'm sure he would - an absolutely sublime performance by everyone on that stage. You can really tell they were 'in the moment'.
Musical harmony with guitar, lyrics and voice.
I have nothing else to say but 10/10 .❤
The best version of Speedway At Nazareth.
Agreed. Emmylou's backing vocals and the fiddle crush it.
Cackling Crow I just love the way they sound together on this.
ruclips.net/video/vRnam1OdvMA/видео.html
Yes
Agreed
That is not a band that is an orchestra, what a performance by the band outstanding
How does this boy from the North of England capture the spirit of being American so much? It is a marvel.
His father was Hungarian :D
He became a student of Americana. Something many take for granted
I so absolutely love this performance. The chemistry. The drive. The drummer!
Gees, you feel if they stopped the drummer would run over them excellent 👍
Danny Cummins the drummer. Classic style.
I actually prefer Danny as drummer instead of Ian Thomas. He's an amazing percussionist too, which is his first love, but so in touch with what the song requires when he's behind the kit too.
I was lucky enough to see them in Dublin. Im a professional guitarist as in international touring, but after seeing and hearing the pure skill and musicianship on that stage that night nearly made me go home and burn all my equipment because I wasn't that good after all 😅
👏👏🙏Still making that guitar cry and sing!
And Emmylou- still one of the most beautiful women in the world!
She's incredibly beautiful!
The outro is fantastic and addictive. Strange that this song never had the success that deserved
This is the most melodic version of this great song. Riveting
First time hearing it and cannot imagine a better version.
@@aspjake123this is it, the best version by a mile
Of all the great artists out there who give me musical goosebumps - I have to say Mark is the absolute best at creating and stirring emotions. Every song - every drip of sound from his guitar and mouth is moving. Sometimes he mumbles and I dont know what he says - but Im into it.
He's a blessing for everyone who's heard and appreciates him.
As a guitarist and songwriter myself - Ive always set my sights on ppl like Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix but lately Ive come to realize Mark really shows what it means to be an artist. Those other guys do too of course but Mr K embodies what it means to get on stage and move people with music.
These kind of mind blowing instrumental/final solo´s is a trademark of MK. He did many times in DS and also in his solo career like this song. Really hard to stop listening. Thank you Mark!
I've listened to this so many times now I've lost count. The emotion and unearthly sound Mark produces on that guitar, as he does on every song, is unequaled. Emmylou's silky smooth voice is a wonderment. It is this song that turned me on to her music so late in life. I feel privileged to have seen Mark live and only hope he decides to tour in the States again someday.
I love to listen to Mark Knopfler and band. So i do and did when it was Dire Straits. Emmylou Harris already got me 1977 with Blue Kentucky Girl! :)))
Her voice is so amazingly beautiful.
I was a long-time Emmylou follower, less Knopfler beyond Dire traits. My daughter gave me the CD of their collaboration when it came out. What a musical revelation. And finding the concert videos was like striking gold. (or Digging Up a Diamond). 🤩🎶💎🎶💎
This is Music. Real Music. That’s really all I wanted to say.
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris always.... take me to Heaven.....
Good Lord this is one of the best albums of all time! The chemistry between the Sultan and Emmylou is indescribable. I’m totally mesmerized!!
same...both amazing in their own right...never thought of putting them together...WOW...JUST HOLY FREAKING WOW...
Yeah, the sultan ... you're right!!!
Mark is a good human! Know him well. Cheers. Stay well.
Ditto!!!!
After all these years... i still have goosebumps!!
What I love is that on this song, Emmylou takes up the rhythm guitar part, the supreme superstar just playing in the band, and does her job flawlessly.
This isn't just music. The song is like story. When you listen this it's like when children listen with open mouth story of life they grandpa. Amazing
Another Masterpiece from Mark Knopfler, if this Song was a Painting it would be considered a Masterpiece 💚☘️
*The Sultan and the Songbird are Master's of their own crafts, combined together they are pure Magic!*
Why did The Algorithm bring this to my attention only now? I could have been enjoying this masterpiece for years by now.
I can’t stop listening. This song is like a drug. Amazing. Hooked.
MARK'S facial expression is so Focused and Committed and Emmylou the Two compliment each other which makes this song done ✔ to Perfection 🥰. A true Masterpiece 👍
Mark's music is so intense that it doesn't need a show.
You can close your eyes and let yourself be carried away.
Possibly the best song ever written........
Two musical beasts singing and playing together. And on top of that, it's a beautiful song from Mark Knopfler's repertoire. I never get tired of listening!👏👏👏❤️
Remarkable, I can watch this and then some, apart from the personal connection with time and place it is musical artistry, but then of course.. it's Mark Knopfler!
This may be one of the most powerful musical masterpieces ever created. It builds and builds with every instrument. Both this live version and the original cranked up with a pair of headphones is incredible. This particular album has so many amazing songs. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Especially the build up is important for the pay off to have effect. Formularic music today mostly have instant gratification/a hook to begin with and several other "pangs" happening every few seconds. The craziest example I ever saw was Prince at the brit awards in 2006 or 2007. People were screaming and yelling at several "artists" performing. I think the "Fratellis" and "Orson" got awards. You remember them, right? (sarcasm)
It was truly pathetic watching the kareoke shows go on and on.
Not a great Prince fan but he just blew everything away when he got on stage and played live.

Thanks for this comment. I listen to a lot of classical music as well. This deserves a top spot across all genres IMO. Luminous beauty and musical parkour.
I absolutely agree with you 👍 the solo alone is worth the price of admission to this performance of a lifetime ✨
LOVE THIS X1,000,000. Mark is one of the most expressive guitarists on Earth. And no one has more beautiful phrasing. He is CRIMINALLY underrated. And Emmylou is wonderful as always. My goodness she is so beautiful.
I agree...Emmy Lou is an Angel
you try, you suffer, you lose, you get robbed, but you fight on. and if that speedway at nazareth never comes for you, you know you did your best and had never quit.
Unbelievable!! Can't get no better than that.x what a absolute legend of a musician.
This is probably one of the best versions of this very song. And, for me, the best band that MK has ever put together.
And Danny on the drums!
my sentiments exactly
Yes indeed Danny is the magic that brings this song to life, and Emmylou is a touch of class. Beautifully performed by the band.
ruclips.net/video/vRnam1OdvMA/видео.html
No matter what kind of electric guitar he plays his sound is unmistakable.
Indeed. The instantly recognizable sound is the true mark (pun intended) of the very best musicians out there.
I think it’s a Gibson Les Paul.
Les Paul 1958 an original one
Knopfler makes the best music and attracts the best musicians. Brings tears to my eyes.God Bless.
This piece, Mark and an amazing band, Danny Cummins pounding his guts with Mark celebrating his brilliance........ Thanks. This is what i like.
This is the best version ever by Knopfler. Pure ecstacy.
This is by far the best version of this great tune IMO!
I’m a huge Clapton fan but Mark might be the greatest guitarist of our generation.
You can close your eyes and you are always there, perfection exists
Drummer kills it! Pounds those toms and every time he hits the snare the energy steps up a notch!
He must've been exhausted by the end of the song!
If anything, the drums are downplayed (volume) in this video, compared to another I've seen that I cannot find any longer with same drummer.
Danny Cummings is very talented, and proficient.
His interpretation of what Knopfler wants from the music is absolutely amazing.
He hammers it out, making the complex seem simple.
Very, very talented.
Me too, watched it many many times, If I want a cheer up, I put it on , i sing along and do the harmonics that Emmy Lou does and it don’t sound that bad, Love it , love it, What a pity I wont see it live. Just incredible. Shivers, tingling, just fantastic.
Mark Knopfler is great as always. Soulful guitar work backed by a very tight and talented band. Emmylou Harris even in her late 60s is cute as a button. Love her voice.
If I was marooned on an island and could only have the music from one artist, it would be Mark Knopfler. He is so diverse and amazing with his lyrics, and an absolute master of the guitar.
100%
I listened to MK as I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2019. It was the sound track of my hike! Trapper Man, Sailing to Philadelphia, Speedway all had special meaning along the way! Thanks Mark!
I feel it deep in my soul,❤🔥and I`m almost crying..
Show me something better. Thank God for Mark Knopfler

Those last three-plus minutes gave me goosebumps! "In the pocket" to the max.
I don't remember where I was on June 28, 2006, but it is certain that I was not where it should be... What a superb piece, once again. Thank you Mark, thank you Emmylou , thank you for this video too
I've seem them live twice. No bills hit, no fancy clothes just exceptional music. I love it
I adore Mark and his magical guitar.
This music, and Mark's guitar in particular, is a true mystical experience
One of my favourite Mark Knopfler tracks. And that band made it look effortless. True musical abilities.
Danny Cummings, impressionnant 👍, quel beau moment de batterie.
I am not a musician and am in awe how all of these guys stay in sync. They all do their bit in harmony with the others. Brilliant.
5:45 look at the drummer! he and everyone are having such a great time on stage and I love to see that come back!!
I suppose that it's something akin to impossible to steal the show from Mark Knopfler, or Emmylou Harris, but, damn... the drummer came close. WOW!
Jesus what a song. That epic last few minutes you can just see the cars flying around the track. Mark, the universe speaks through your guitar. Many thanks.
When emmylou joins in the singing it ups the drama and tempo brilliantly
Danny hits it hard. Awesome...
The end of the song is one of the best ever, Knofpler is a magician and of course he is the master
Nothing beats this, what a masterpiece.
A race and a travel through the America described like a movie in a beautiful song by one of the best songwriter of all time. The perfect sound of the les paul characterized the epic, powerful, imaginative and awesome outro. Mark you are a real living legend!!!
Well obviously, Mark Knopfler 🙇🏻♂
But the outro drumming in this performance by Danny Cummings is what takes it to the next level imho. So much passion and perfection! 🔥
While introducing the band, Mark refers to each member as world class musicians. Danny Cummings proves him right with this performance.
Speedway At Nazareth absolutely perfect
Nessuno fa parlare la chitarra come lui ed è una meraviglia con Emmylou
Wow...the biggest compliment i can give here is that even my ears are applauding..fantastic
There are men who speak to the most affectionate and secretive part of our soul and so make it clear that you like to call on you: GOD BLESS YOU BEATIFUL MEN!!!
Phenomenal musicianship. Outstanding performance. And that Danny Cummings! My gosh. Thank you Mark and gang
Heard this with and without Emmylou and the final result is totally different. The brilliance of Emmy just adds layers of richness to an already classic song. MK’s work is just out of this world.
Mark Knopfler! Best singer, best guitar player, best song writer EVER.
Epicest song ever!
Sailing to Philadelphia is such a rollercoaster of emotions...
Amazing sound quality from a live show, became my favorite song the first time I heard it and still is. Emmylou is the perfect blend of seasoning whoever's she works with she enhances everything perfectly. A world class band, and best singer songwriter ever, in my not so humble opinion.
That lick at 5:43 ...... Damn near brings a tear to my eye.
Hi mark. Sorry for my bad english because i'm french and i have 16 years old. I'm verry fan of you, you gave me a motivation for play guitar. i love guitar it's the best instrument. And you are the best.
Keep on playing !
FrappaRush " keep on truck'in "
Its great you hear this music at your age....keep on!
Go for it mon amie, I started when I was 55
@@carloszarauz6849 There's hope, ain't there?
I do not think is any better than these two together. Mark you are the best ever! Keep up and entertain me!
Beyond Words syntonical Harmony, one among the best duo ever!
we had Hendrix thank God we still have Knopfler--- fookin awesome
Can't get enough, they work right well together....
This is not next lvl, this is the highest lvl. One of the greatest songs ever performed by some of the most brilliant artists ever to grace our blue pearl.
Such magic. Hope I get to see him live again.
The opening of this song gives me goosebumps every time. It sounds like Mark Knopfler captured the essence of Appalachia itself and the spirit of the moonshiners that raced down its backroads in the days that pre-dated NASCAR.
The song is about Indy Car racing, not NASCAR...
@@walterzoomie True, but I was describing the feeling it gave me.
@@furioussherman7265 Right on! No worries. Apparently, Knopfler is a fan, but Indy Car is such a niche sport anymore, most folks who are semi-cognizant of auto racing might think NASCAR (or F1) is the only game in town. Being from Indy, and having been effectively raised at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since the late 60's, this tune has special meaning for me. I DO wish Knopfler hadn't mumbled his way through this version, though. Cheers, mate!
@@walterzoomie I'm well aware of IndyCars. Hell, I went to the track in 2015 for the NASCAR race there and toured the museum in the infield. That, however, doesn't change that this song makes me think of NASCAR.
The way he revs the engines after he gets to the Nazareth line........uh huh
The combined talent of Mark and Emmy=a religious experienced for me. Their writing, and the band all of stature. well done old friend.
I remember way back when I got the Sailing To Philadelphia album just kicking back and working on something with this song in the background, when I suddenly realized that I was listening to a masterpiece! And then I heard this version! Can't love it enough!
Hits like a boot in the stones.
Best album of all his works
pretty much how I came across this song. bought the album and this song came on and stopped me in my tracks. listened to it over and over. this is a wonderful version of it
EXACTLY my experience too. I’d heard it a few times and one day I just paid closer attention and thought WOW, this is way better than I was giving credit. It’s haunting if you really listen.
Danny Cummings on drums.....WOW WOW WOW
oh yeah
Oh yesss..Danny got a great groove!!
Such an underrated drummer!
That man's a beast!
He doesn't get to rest up, even one second, does he?
So powerful... Theses harmonies are so wonderful... I love that guy so much... We're lucky to live that time
