Damn NT3.51 was brutal, displaying when you locked the screen, so bosses knew exactly how long youve been away from your computer for!! Thank goodness that feature didn't remain!
on linux the lock screens are usually seperate to the DE and operated by the display manager directly like lightdm, sddm and gdm. there are also standalone lock screen programs like gtklock and i3lock.
Since GNOME 3.3X or 4X, the lock screen is directly operated by GNOME Shell itself, which means if the lock screen goes down, it takes the entire desktop with it for privacy reasons, but the first login screen is separate from it.
The Windows XP one makes me remind the 2012-2021 years. In fact i didn't upgrade to Windows 7 in 2014. I never get a chance for Windows 7 :( But I atleast get Windows 8.1 last year. If you asked why Back in 2014 still using XP ? That's because back in my main computer for my home is a Intel Pentium III. But now i have a Intel i3 that's why i am now having Windows 8.1, Unfortunately my hardware is just a potato PC so it cannot run Windows 10 properly. But good news there will be ESU Bypasses for Windows 8.1 later on which is until 2026. So because of this Getting Windows 10 is less worth because it will only last for 2025. So Windows 8.1 had a 1 year extend than Windows 10's.
Back in 2012 i am just 4 years old. In fact My parents get the Pentium III PC back in Late 2008 as well. I am born in 2008 LOL 😂 but they told me that they got it in 2008 with Windows XP shipped on it as a Used PC
But in the bright side. I get a chance trying Windows 7 on a VM. But sadly i never use it as a Main OS. Just stucked with Windows XP for 13 years with no upgrades. The problem with Pentium III is it's limited to 512 MB of ram. And Yes back in 2012 till 2021 My Computer has a 512MB of ram but now i have a 8gb ram.
