The manual says to fill via the dipstick hole. It also cautions about unbolting the 3rd shift band to fill, which can cause some internal parts to come loose and need reassembly.

Thank you for the informative film. It is impressive mileage on that car. How often did you change the fluid in it before? I've heard that if the car has a lot of miles, it might start to have problems after that procedure. On one car we have (2001 Saturn SL2) it is ~130K. I want to change the transaxle fluid, but have some doubts, since it was never changed before.

I change automatic transmission fluid in this car every 20000 miles. Very important never FLUSH the automatic transmission, because it will damage the transmission. Instead I drain used fluid and refill with the fresh one.

@@dimonmechanic3582 Thank you for the replay and explanations. I didn't know that the flushing is not the same as replacing the fluid via draining. Probably at dealer they can do that flushing with some special machine. This is very important information. I do many things on our cars, but sometimes go to a dealer if not much time for DIY project. I'll keep in mind.

Thanks for a straightforward Video on how to change the auto transmission fluid on a 2003 Saturn Ion. There are so many people posting you can't check/change the fluid without it being way too complicated than this. You can and you show its not complicated.
In your travels underneath this 2003 Saturn Ion with an automatic transmission. Do you know exactly where the Output speed Sensor is located? I know it is on the outside of the transmission, I believe on the passenger side, and has a two wire connector and is attached to a stud by one nut.
The problem for me, and my friend, is we spent over an hour collective under the car looking for this part. We could not find it. While both Hayes and Chilton manuals explain how to remove the part, they fail to give a landmark reference- it is by such and such-, to exactly know where. The only thing clearly visible in the photo, to me, is what appears to be a hoist point right next to it.
The car was raised using ramps on both side of the front of the car. So, access and clearance to see where things are is not the problem
It sounds like an easy job actually.
Any help in identifying where this part is would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Sorry about the late reply. But if this still helps The Speed Sensor is located on top of the transmission, if you look closer it's right by the fill plug to the right.

is this the same on a 2007 saturn ion?

Mine is 2003 model year and has asian 5-speed automatic transmission. They make two kinds of transmission, you can check in the manual which one you have.

My car is an 06 ion 2.4, i was wondering if there is a filter that has to be changed as well with the fluid like some other vehicles or is it all inclosed?

@@dimonmechanic3582 how did you find out ? mine must be too as same looking dipstick. hard to figure out 4 or 5 and no videos on four speed and i dont have a manuel and nothing online. the 5 speed asin supposed to be a better transmission isnt it ? my car and transmission seems great. i need to check fluid since i lost some when changing radiator. im thinking of doing a full service also. just drain and fill right , no filter
