I've had some feedback about Sasuke's Attack yell (4:58): He is exclaiming "フン!テヤ!", or "Hun! Teya!". The translation is still valid as he's making Attack-noises (Hiyah!), though the JP / EN text is not accurate. My apologies.
@@FBI_Agent_69420 Funny you say that… In 'Ganbare Goemon: Oedo Daikaiten' for the PSX, Plasma Man was one of the characters that was essentially hypnotized by the villain into fighting against you! Thankfully, he (along with everyone else who was 'hypnotized') had got better afterwards.
Thanks a million for this! I grew up on these games (based in the US) and have wondered for so many years what the characters say. The mystery is finally solved!
Goemon 64 was one of my first introductions to Japanese culture and I was very surprised when I started watching anime and recognized a few lines that also appeared in the game! Specifically, it was "ikuwayo!" in the first episode of Ranma 1/2. I'm kinda surprised they left these voice lines in the English version, this was an era where game localizers tried to scrub every trace of non-English stuff from their games.
LOL i always thought he was saying 'like soooo', as in someone demonstrating an ability.. 'like so!' *does thing* as that was a pretty common show-off 90s term lmao....
Oh man, it's insane the level of flavor knowing what the characters say adds to the game. It's a shame here in the west we only got two Goemon games, because _they're hilarious_ even if some of the cultural references flew over my head. Thanks for the translation!
I was today thinking at work what would the characters say in the original Japanese game, if someday a retranslation would be a reality. And after some hours I see this in my feed. Mind blown.
I can't stop coming back to this video. My childhood nostalgia has never been so indulged, nor has my childhood bemusement ever been so fully satisfied. Few other notes, because there's often a lot of ways to translate the same phrase. "Mada" on its own means "yet," so I've always heard "madamada!" as "now then!" which can be used as a greeting in the UK, but what's important here is that it can also be used threateningly. Sasuke's "I have to say I'm sorry" could be translated as "my sincerest apologies." I've had a character in D&D say this when hitting zero HP so that one proper resonated with me :P I appreciate the restraint shown in not translating all of Ebi's Kansai-dialect lines to be with a phonetic southern drawl though.
Ebisumaru's "Honii" is something along the lines of "F'real?!" or "SRSLY!", being a contraction of "hontou" and "ni" (themselves together meaning "really" or "truly").
@@aki_TONE I love the fact he can shout it into a megaphone and attack with the physical manifestation of the word. Also aren't all his other lines variants on it? I'm hearing "hone?!" and "honii yo!" but I'm no expert.
I actually figured out a lot of these on my own over the years, but this is great for anyone wondering what the cast is saying. I love Ebisumaru's quirky Kansai dialect.
I'm so happy that I found this, I literally lived like, 10 years without knowing what they were saying. Thank you sm and keep uploading these type of videos !
This was amazing! Great job! I think the only things you're missing were: -The lines said when baton passing during an Impact Battle in GGA/MN2 (I know Goemon and Ebisumaru are some variant of "tanomu", or "I'm counting on you!". It's been a while so I don't quite recall Sasuke and Yae's.) -The special jutsu quotes in both 64 games. Of note is Sasuke in GGA/MN2, who says "henshin!", or "Transform!". (IIRC Yae also has a quote, but I don't recall it atm either.) -The greeting from the other eatery in Oedo in GGA/MN2. -Goemon/Omitsu Impact's "Hyakuretsu Punch" or "100-Hit Punch" (lit. "Hundred Rending Punches).
This is tremendous! ✌️ I listen to Mystical Ninja’s OST while studying Japanese & this popped-up in related videos today… more great Japanese practice… and I can finally understand those phrases I heard thousands of times as a kid & never understood
Some of the translations here seem kinda questionable though. Take "dameda" for example. A much closer and more accurate translation would be "it's no good" or "don't do it/stop it" depending on the context (though in this context it would have the former meaning).
Yo, just found this channel today. Amazing work. Thank you so much for putting this together. I loved this game more than Banjo and Super Mario 64 and I'm gutted I don't have more friends in my close circle to chat about it with. I'd love to see a breakdown of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon's plot and the popularity of the series in Japan.
When me and my brother were young, we misheard Goemon saying Ikuze as "Izay" and thought that was his name as well. We even wrote "Izay" on top of the cartridge with a permanent marker. Boy, we were wrong all this time.
It seems youtube read my mind. I was thinking on what the translation was. I played this game like 20 years ago. Thabks for this! For many years Goemon was my favorite game.
For 26 years I wondered what they were saying. Thank you so much for making this vid. I think the reason some of the audio is so hard to parse is because the “S” and “SH” sounds don’t seem to have been properly picked up when they recorded the voice tracks. That or the tracks had to be extremely compressed to fit on the cartridge.
4:09 if I'm not mistaken, I remember that same phrase being spoken in one of Pokemon Stadiums minigames as well when lickitung is eating sushi. Very interesting.
It's wild to me that due to compression, Ive been hearing these wrong all my life. Like, Ive been hearing LESS syllables and hearing lots of "ii" noises that just arent there. I could have sworn they were: 0:14 Ikusei 0:26 Teyambi 0:37 THATS ALL (thanks bugs bunny) 0:51 Kudaeh! Heii! 1:01 Hiiyei! Koronuka! 1:11 Arei--oompah
Omg i love this! I knew some of the Japanese words like "X Sanjo!" But i would have never guessed that Ebisumaru's Hoi-hoi's were cat noises! Lol God i love these games. Thank you for this.
this is the kind of video i didn't think i wanted, but i stayed for the whole thing. as someone who just beat mystical ninja 64 again after all these years, thank you.
Lol for the longest time I thought Ebisumaru was saying "what is it now" or "watch me now" in English since he likes to show off and speak English. Never would have thought he'd saying Bacchiri denna... Also, Goemon's accent is thickkkkk
You know what? If Japanese were my first language growing up I still would've needed this video because hot dang those voice samples are so compressed. Goemon's "ikuze" and "kurae" were the only ones I genuinely recognized but there were loads of others I needed this guide to decipher despite already knowing the phrases (and plenty more that I didn't, of course.) I never could tell Sasuke and Yae were saying the exact same thing when being switched in :P
Thank you so much for this. I started researching this on my own but had a hard time with some of them because I just couldn't understand exactly what the characters were saying due to to the N64's low sound quality. Liked and subbed, I need more Goemon in my life!
I always wondered, what does Goemon say when youcomolete a sidequest? I never got what he was saying, but couldn't shake the sound "Te atrapé" (Spanish for: "Gotcha!") from whatever he says. Please help! I know I'm wrong, but can't shake that sound from... Whatever he says.
Just found this video and it brings me so much joy to know what they are all saying!! You did a great job with the presentation and I really hope to see more content from you 🙂
I have family from Hachioji, when they came to the States and saw me playing this, they went crazy with excitement. I had forgotten about these call outs. I was fortunate enough to have them translate for me years ago, but not fortunate enough to remember them 😅
While I'm trying to get over this terrible sore throat impeding on my ability to record my let's play videos, I might as well put down some anime-dub-style adaptations of these translations: Goemon: "Here goes!" "Come again?" "Too easy!" "Hiyah! Haaah!" "Yah! How do you like that?" "Hiiii-yah!" "Leave it to me!" "Here goes!" "No more..." "Come on..." "I'm not done yet!" Ebisumaru: "So should I get going?" "Purrrrrrr..." "Not too shabby!" "Hup! C'mon, you!" "Gotcha! Yow!" "I won't let you down!" "Let's do this!" "Unbelievable..." "That ain't good..." "Back for more!" Sasuke: "Sasuke, at your service." "Onward." "I owe much gratitude." "Hi-yah!" "Onward." "Shall we advance?" "My apologies..." "No..." "I am revived." Yae: "Here I go!" "Yae is here!" "Watch me now!" "Toiyah! Toh! Eh! Kapow!" "Now we're talkin'!" "It's my turn!" "Gahhhh..." "No more..." "Back in the fight."

They have other lines they says when injured, do you plan on doing another video on those as well? That would be equally as interesting to here :)
