    Kinda binging on these videos while I'm a little under the weather, better than chicken noodle soup.
    My favorite response to the "I diplomacy this guy for (rolls 19)." thing that some players do, is something a DM I used to play with said, "Well, the guard is happy for you that you rolled such a high number but unfortunately he tells you that he can't play dice while he's on duty."

    • @Nerdarchy
      @Nerdarchy  10 лет назад +1

      LOL, nice tension breaker. It the weak spot of systems like 3.5 and Pathfinder a rule and roll for everything. It trains us to rely on the dice. 5e is a great way to RPs back to their roots. I've seen DMs want a roll for everything as well so problem exist on both sides of the screen.

    This was a pretty good video for starting DMs and had a LOT of good ideas in it. My reason for posting is to pass one a hilarious event in a tiny village that a party was stopping at before going underground to face the monsters they had some to slay to protect the area (hired by the local lord for that purpose)... The party got up early and were honing swords, mending clothes, etc... all the minor things one does before going out, when a band of goblins invaded the village, in broad daylight.
    They were carefully moving up to doors, checking if they were locked, then getting in and either slaying the peasants within, or running them out of the home and then looting anything they thought valuable. One goblin seemed to be making a map as they moved through town, and the band was only driven off by the party's intervention.
    After the Goblins were slain or driven off, one of the players noted how oddly the goblins had acted. The DM (not me by the way) explained that the goblin party was a goblin adventurer group. They had come in daylight because every goblin knows you sleep in the day.
    Their pitiful weapons didn't kill many of the peasants, before the party arrived, and the most valuable things they stole were candle sticks, candles, food, and what few copper coins the peasants may have had. I think one goblin actually made off with a butcher's meat cleaver, which, it seemed inordinately proud to have in it's possession.
    The whole point of the daylight raid by the goblins was to show how silly the party had been acting. Going into a monster's 'village' at night? When every monster is awake? Bursting in and stealing what they could lay hands on, and not bothering to stay around long enough to find anything truly valuable? etc.
    Just thought you'd get a laugh out of this,
    the Frank Gamer

    Thanks for the tips! I once had my players explore a massive "ghost ship" that had risen form the depths after a coastal storm. I ran it as a "dungeon crawl" but had the unique setting details and monsters that would come with a raised ship. The Dwarven Forge "Inn"-syle pieces also helped!

    I actually ran a dungeon that had a maze with a "giant golden snitch" which was a Beholderkin that had its eyestalks removed and fused with solid gold (I used the Beholder and the Pathfinder Metal-Clad Creature template). When the party found it, its back was turned to them so I described it as a Large sized golden snitch without wings, and they freaked out when it turned around trying to bite their faces off

    I actually, recently, wrote the modern horror version of a dungeon crawl that is all about exploring a creepy old haunted house and what happens as the characters explore each room. It was pretty funa actually. Also, did a sci-fi version set on a research satalite in space. :)

      Nerdarchy Yeah the ghost was an old toy maker who was the victim of a home invasion so his main thing was animating toys (dolls, toy soldiers and the like) and one person he strangled with a jump rope and there's an encounter where he pummels the player characters with a bouncing rubber ball. There's even one bit where they find one of those kid's record players and the record starts playing backwards and the voice tells them to get out of the house. :)
      The sci-fi one it turns out the scientists where creating mutagenic compounds in micro gravity and something go lose. Turned part of the crew into mutated monsters who killed the rest. The characters are sent to find out why the crew had stopped contacted their based on Earth.

    I used to own Tomb of Horrors. About 10 years ago, I gave away some of my 1st Ed. AD&D material, so I am not sure if it is still in with the piles of old varied RPG materials I have not gone through in ages or not. Never RAN it, though.
    I am more of student of tabletop RPGs than a player, as my friends were not into that stuff. Played tons of RPGs on computers and consoles, but that's not the same thing.

    Great ideas. I enjoy using polymorphed creatures. For example, one adventure I ran had an innocent NPC who was unjustly polymorphed into a beholder. He didn't have all the powers of a beholder, but his anti-magic ray was functional. The party arrived and found him with several charmed half naked females rubbing behind his eye stalks. The mimic is also my fav. In fact, I like to use them as ladders. You let the PC climp up and suddenly they find out they are holding on to two long sticky tendrils with a gaping maw below them. Lastly, I enjoy tossing out illusions of creatures. "Yes, you are first level and there is a horned devil standing before you."

    • @Nerdarchy
      @Nerdarchy  10 лет назад

      Nice suggestions. Love the ladder idea that sounds like a lot of fun. Those poor ladies. I hope the charm person also wiped their memories or they're going to need some serious therapy.

    I will generally give a pseudo-clear path by which the goal can be achieved; if the players come up with a way to circumvent one or more parts of that path, I try and make it a very dramatic situation. Sometimes I also set the difficulty very high in order to increase the drama and heroicism on success but not also stopping them from a path to the goal if their gambit fails.

    Tomb of Horrors SPOILER: One of our characters had gone through the arch that teleported living matter back to entrance, and non-living matter to the demi-lich's crypt, leaving him standing at the entrance naked and wondering where his equipment was. So we used a Wish spell to teleport the party to his equipment. And that's how we accidentally skipped almost the entire Tomb :P Kids, don't try this at home.

    The best part about it is playing around your players. they'll always lurch down some way you didn't see, find some loophole, think of SOMETHING that you didn't. because you never know what spells that cleric prepared that day, or what that barbarian will manage to pull off, or when the druid's tired of debating and just T-rexes into the encampment of 50 orcs. The first campaign I DM'd I tried using a pitfall trap. it worked perfectly...until they all tied thier rope together and had the druid fly back up, problem solved. I'm just glad I have so many good DM's in our 3 'groups' that constatnly intermingle. always a few DM's not in the campaign to help a new guy learn.

    See i dont use many dungeon crawls in my D&D games im soo set on telling a huge story you know things on a scale equal to Game of thrones or lord of the rings what kinda advise can you give to a dm that does not involve Dungeon crawls

    • @Nerdarchy
      @Nerdarchy  10 лет назад +1

      There is no reason to not use dungeon crawls. Dungeon crawl is just a structure to create and adventure. There are several dungeons throughout the Lord of the Rings books- Mines of Moria, the tunnels going into Mordor, and the Mirkwood off the top of my head.
      We offer up a lot of different tips throughout these videos- ruclips.net/p/PLYSecr3PvKGI_THIETrU_QvA8kIlIFibc

    Oh my group is going to hate me for that Gem Tease trick.
    I've always struggled with that Roll vs Riddle dilemma. A few times I've thought of really cool (in my head) puzzles and they just want to drop a dice about it. I mean I didn't just put a few hours, either actually sitting down and thinking or otherwise in the back of my head at work, just to have to tell you the answer. That's SO disappointing to me. I'm bringing it back for my next set of missions for the group. But in a lot looser format than only having one answer set in stone for the puzzle.
    I do wish there was a Puzzle Trap collection somewhere but the only one I could find on the internet hasn't been updated in like three years. Maybe it's like trade secrets or something and DMs don't want to share it. I know there has to be hundreds and thousands of them out there that could spawn more when a DM wants to make it their own, but it's so hard to find.
    One I've recently thought of and am going to use in the not to distant future, so hopefully my players don't wander through here. The Hard Way vs Easy Way. The treasure chest sits on a balcony far up the rocky cliff. There are stairs leading up to the balcony on the right side, a railing in the middle, but no railing on the left. No traps on the stairs or anything. If they go up them and open the treasure chest it's empty. Drop in some kind of clue if they struggle for a too long about it being odd that there is no railing on the left when there is rail on the rest of the balcony and down the stairs. It looks like it was intentionally made that way. Secret is? They HAVE to climb up the wall so there will be treasure in the treasure chest.
    Also Kerry is like a Unicorn Pegasus! In my experience it's very rare to have female players, then to hear she is a DM! That is so so awesome and I'm SO jealous. The ultra nerdy (wanted to be a psychiatrist) portion of my brain wonders how a woman's campaign would differ from all the male ones I've been in. Just the subtleties and nuances. There is a group called Missclicks and when I first heard about them playing D&D on RUclips and twitch, I was so curious. Hoping for an ALL girl group, slightly disappointed by the fact that the DM was a guy. That's my long winded way of saying, keep her coming back. I need her input.

    See, those are the women in roleplaying, this is the kind of representation women need - well-versed, knowledgeable, articulate women who obviously love the games, not loudmouthed feminists who are too busy pointing fingers to actually contribute anything meaningful to the hobby.
    Thanks, Nerdarchy, for bringing this wonderful woman onboard, that was a great listen.

      Curratum see this comment is bullshit. She's a person, not a "type." Try this on for size "See, those are the blacks in business, this is the kind of representation blacks need- well-versed, knowledgeable, articulate blacks who obviously love the business." It's insulting as hell- like a condescending pat on the head. Shit like your comment is the reason feminists have to point fucking fingers because you don't think of us a real people.

    Why stop with just a lever to open a door and a mimic disguised as the lever? Why not add in another lever that activates a trap! But perhaps leave it at three levers, MAYBE add a fourth or fifth lever just as dummy levers that don't actually do anything.

    Rules? what are rules? rules are for players not game masters, read the book, but fudge the rules.

    • @Nerdarchy
      @Nerdarchy  9 лет назад +1

      +Rowan Armstead Haha, way to do some comment necromancy on my part, but if you're doing a Meating Grind'in Dungeon Delve, I think "playing by the rules"/being fair is extremely important! It's like, "Guys, this game is going to be hard as hell and I am ultimately going to kill you, but I'm going to be completely impartial about it", this makes the game so much better and the victories the players earn that much more meaningful if you're not making arbitrary rulings as the GM. -Nerdarchist Ryan

    • @rowanarmstead3826
      @rowanarmstead3826 9 лет назад

      That, is a good point, It depends on the scenario though, I fudge rules with monsters alot (customizing them) but once I set something it is that way, can't just go and change something because I want to, because then the players can't get a feel for how things work. But yes I agree.

    • @randomusernameCallin
