It was good because it forced me to spend much time in prayer and the Bible. I went to a novus ordos church but still feeling compelled to go to the tradional Latin Mass as it is far more reverent. As an LDS woman, I respect the Catholic Church and I love mass. My favorite part is when the congregation passes the peace...I think that's what it's called. I will say, our community was tight where I was raised LDS, but not many of my connections were genuine. Many of my friends were assigned to me through their callings, and there was a noted inauthenticity. Not in every relationship of course, but overall that was my experience. I have to seek out connection and not all parishes have good opportunities for it, but because it's more of a choice on my part and theirs the connections have been more genuine. I do wish more parishes had more opportunities for getting together, but without "callings" like in LDS, it requires parishioners to volunteer and set things up.

@Cklert - as a Catholic too, it's sad to hear that you're not experiencing an active/close community. Where are you at?
Everywhere we've lived/traveled we literally have to limit ourselves insofar as how many ministries we get involved in there are just so many.
If your local community is not very active, look into national groups like Family Apostolate , ACTS, Cursillo, etc - there are Many!

    • @Cklert
      @Cklert 29 дней назад +1

@@garyr.8116 I was more or less talking about parishes in a general sense. Not specifically mine.
My parish is active. But it's also very large and growing. Which is a very good thing don't get me wrong. But it becomes very difficult to develop a close community as there's simply just a lot of us. There are plenty of events, ministries, etc. I do wish there were more things centered around young adults.
When I compare it to the LDS though, it seems a lot tighter I guess that's the word. Like everyone knows each other, and everyone gets together outside of church activities. At least from what I am told.

@@Cklert Related but not a direct answer to what you’ve been talking about:
My LDS brother and his wife moved from Texas to Maryland for just a year and just now moved back to their house in TX…. They needed a place to stay in MD for only a year, with two little boys…. My sister-in-law was close friends with a Catholic, who helped them find a place through her Catholic connections.
Our whole family, having always lived in Utah and been LDS, not knowing too many Catholics, was surprised to learn that the Catholics have networks just as we do. 😆 And I LOVE it!
So now, reading your comments, I am much more curious about how the “Catholic network” and the “LDS network” compare.
It is very special to have networks of people that you trust - partly because you know and trust them and partly because you trust that they believe what you believe and will treat you honestly and fairly.
I think it’s a lovely component of the Christian society that we would all like to build.

The Eucharist is salvation! Where did you learn that? Not in the Bible. Faith in Christ and who He is and what He has done is Salvation. Bible says “ You are saved through faith” You have to twist Scripture and misinterpret it and pretend you do not understand what Scripture is saying to come up with your statement about the Eucharist.
The Catholic Church has done this!
Jesus was not saying eat His flesh and drink His blood literally!
Just as He is not a gate literally.
Just as He is not a door literally.
Just as He is not water literally.
The Catholics will agree with to 3 examples above. But how interesting that they will NOT admit that about the flesh and blood?
Because they have invented their own doctrines around it and need to protect and defend them!

I have to say as a Catholic I’ve been dying for an LDS and RC dialogue like this. I find Mormons to be so much more interesting than Protestants and I really believe the LDS belief system helps clarify overlooked Christian beliefs such as this. Catholics and modern western Christians in general tend to only think of God in his Divine Essence the atemporal pure actuality (divine simplicity) BUT we also believe in created spiritual realms (beyond our physical universe) where souls/angels AND BODIES reside. This type of stuff helps clarify the bodily ascension of our Lord and other bodies that have been assumed into heaven (as Trent brings up). Thankful that LDS teachings are bringing light to these things that modern Christians wiggle away from or haven’t even bothered wrestling with.

This dialogue really helped me demystify and understand LDS theology better, and I really, really appreciate it. To me, it seems that mormonism is almost the opposite to gnosticism. Gnostics condemn the material world, Mormons claim God is material. And that's why Hansen respected Catholic, because the Catholic church insists on the interconnectedness between the spiritual and the material view of God (Catholic doctors are assortments of platonic & aristotelian thinkers, Plato being more gnostic, ideal, transcendence, while Aristotle being more natural, material, empiric.)
And why Mormons are at odds with Protestants, whom are leaning more Platonic in their philosophy.
Edit: It's said that Aquinas "baptized" Aristotle, his philosophy, marking the pinnacle of scholastic theology. So, Hansen being fascinated by Aquinas kinda confirms Mormon is more aligned with Aristotle than Plato.

Protestants were interested in reforming certain church doctrines NOT claiming the Catholic church like the Book of Mormon does in calling it the Mother church of Abominations.

@ChaChaDancin I can't see how it is possible for an unlearned farm boy in 1829 to make up a story that is so profound with so many deep and applicable lessons and principles to so many life situations in a matter of a few months without divine intervention or severe satanic influence. Even the best authors today would have a challenge doing that. And if it were satanic influence, how could a church that produces so much good be built on that? Even Christ said by their fruits ye shall know them. The fruit of the church is undeniably good at this time. If it were proven false by an example i previously cited, there's no other church than the Catholic church that has legitimate claim to Christ's authority. I guess i can't say for sure I'd run stait to the catholic church but Christ's authority seems incredibly valid and important in the Bible. But I also have the witness of the Holy Ghost as I've prayed about the Book of Mormon that witnesses to me every time of its truthfulness. I actually did request my records to be removed from the church at one point. The Book of Mormon and my patriarchal blessing brought me back from that with a powerful witness. I can't deny that because of a few flaws of man. I don't understand every point of doctrine. I don't even necessarily hold that the historicity of the book of Mormon is flawless but I've had too many witnesses that the principles and doctrines contained therein are true and are God's word. And as I live them my life is blessed. That seems witness enough for me for now.

And to be in His presence is simply enough for us. We don't need to become gods like He is, look at what happened to Adam and Eve when they were jealous of God and wanted to become like him. I believe Jacob had a good point on the issue of whether or not the classical theist God would be an actual being or person or simply a Law. I had previously concluded that the classical view is not a person but more like a Law. I suppose the issue with saying classic theism is a Law is the issue of B theory of time where all moments exist simultaneously and are as eternal as God is. With that said I don't believe that is a rational idea even with a personal God who is outside of time. The Father’s person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered him. I asked Jesus if his Father had a form like himself. He said he had, but I could not behold it, for he said if you should once behold the glory of his person you would cease to exist" (Letter published in Broadside 1, April 6, 1846, par. 7).

As much as I find LDS people having the wrong theology of Jesus. I believe they have a lot they can teach Catholics in many areas of their faith. I have really enjoyed this communication between Trent and this other man I forget his name. It gives a chance to learn about both of these faiths and a calm, gentle way. I wish we would have more people communicate like this. Because even as a Catholic, there is so much that Trent is saying that many Catholics don’t even understand about being Catholic. I would imagine it goes the same for the LDS. I have met many missionaries over the years. And very few really know how to have a calm conversation. They often seem to want to just attack my faith, but no nothing of it but yet want to tell me that they know everything about it. Sometimes we need to just listen and take the process slowly. And let the Holy Spirit guide us. Thank you for this incredible and gentle conversation about Catholics and Mormons.

I don’t think our purpose is to move away from suffering. I think it is to learn to accept that suffering is linked to good and you must accept suffering to create the greatest good. Christ himself accepted and moved through the greatest suffering to create the atonement. If we are to follow Christ we will learn to do the same.

    • @zzc8505
      @zzc8505 22 дня назад

the point about suffering is about the eternal perspective. What you are describing is very earthly and somewhat erroneous. While we do need to learn to deal with suffering with faith, we don't need to suffer needlessly and we are meant to move away from suffering whenever we can. For instance, if you are in an abusive situation, you need to remove yourself from it. If you are assaulted, you should defend yourself, not submit to the assailant. You are within your right to defend yourself, to protect your bodily and psychological integrity -- those are all ways of moving away from suffering. Suffering is part of this broken world, but it doesn't mean we should be passive about it. Even throughout the Bible people seek happiness and well being, not being pushovers/victims. Even Christ first asked to have his cup removed from him, only after which he said thy will be done --- seek your well being, seek happiness, seek joy, while accepting God's will and whatever may come, which may include suffering.

By being divinized in the Celestial Kingdom, we become like Him, and are therefore able to participate in the endless works of creation with Him, but those works are still His. A Catholic Opinion.-Many years ago there came to Salt Lake City a learned doctor of divinity, a member of the Roman Catholic Church. I became well acquainted with him, and we conversed freely and frankly. A great scholar, with perhaps a dozen, languages at his tongue’s end, he seemed to know all about theology, law, literature, science and philosophy, and was never weary of displaying his vast erudition. One day he said to me: “You Mormons are all ignoramuses. You don’t even know the strength of your own position. It is so strong that there is only one other tenable in the whole Christian world, and that is the position of the Catholic Church. The issue is between Catholicism and Mormonism. If we are right, you are wrong; if you are right, we are wrong; and that’s all there is to it. The Protestants haven’t a leg to stand on. If we are wrong, they are wrong with us, for they were a part of us and went out from us; while if we are right, they are apostates whom we cut off long ago. If we really have, as we claim, the apostolic succession from St. Peter, there was no need for Joseph Smith and Mormonism; but if we have not that succession, then such a man as Joseph Smith was necessary, and Mormonism’s attitude is the only consistent one. It is either the perpetuation of the Gospel from ancient times, or the restoration of the Gospel in latter days.” [2]

@@jacobecklund3651 Very interesting and very fair points. I think you are totally correct. My comments below showcase an LDS perspective on your comments.
I think we LDS would say a few things regarding the idea that the Church wouldn't apostatize:
      1. Christ was referring to revelation as the rock after which he named Peter (since Jesus was talking about revelation from God right before giving Peter his name) and that revelation would be the rock upon which Christ built His Church, not Peter (after all, Peter was martyred). Also, that as Chief Apostle, Peter would be the one to receive the revelation that would guide Christ's Church which he did for example when it was revealed to him on the roof that it was now acceptable to God for them to eat pork.
      2. We would say that in the ultimate sense, the gates of hell did not prevail against Christ's Church because it was restored after having gone into apostasy through loss of priesthood keys that the Apostles held that Bishops did not hold.
      3. The apostasy of the Church was happening even in Paul's day and there were many epistles written that we have in the New Testament to correct the parts of the Church that were rotting.
      4. The fact that the Apostles held a higher priesthood authority and the keys of apostleship that were not bestowed on Bishops, meaning Bishops could continue running the Church (as they did) but they did not have the same authority as Apostles who held the priesthood right to receive revelation from Christ and God for the Church and the world. This is why the Pope is called the First Bishop of Rome. He does not have the priesthood authority of an Apostle as Jesus Christ ordained.
Since the Apostles held higher authority than Bishops, it would be difficult to claim that apostolic succession continued when apostles, their priesthood authority, keys and positions didn't continue. It would be like claiming if all the Catholic Bishops were killed off, that Catholic Priests could do everything that Catholic Bishops could do and continuing the Church from there. Obviously something would be lost.
As LDS we see this as proof that the original Church lost the presiding priesthood keys & authority to continue the Church and thus the necessitation of a Restoration of the Church--new wine in new wineskins as it were.
I meant no offense with this comment - hopefully you can clarify or add comments to this from your perspective. This dialogue is good.

Former 6 generation Mormon here, the doctrine on Poligamy in the D & C states clearly that poligamy is their Eternal Covenant. Mormons that practice polygamy are only doing what their scripture says! They are the truest of Mormons. Read their doctrine and covenants and you will see. it’s never been removed they believe clearly, and plainly that polygamy is the eternal covenant. Their church doesn’t practice it any longer, but it’s still laid bare in their scriptures for all to see. Mormons are precious people, and the ones who practice polygamy are only trying to live (their) eternal gospel that Joseph Smith lived. And I pray for them.🙏🏻

I worked on a project for the church that had to define all the circumstances where people can be sealed.
Women can in fact be sealed to more than one man, just not in mortality.
It seems to me that a sealing is a promise of an eternal marriage, but not an actual realization of it.

There's a great book by an LDS author that shows that there is perfect harmony between the prophetic statements concerning the garden of Eden being in Missouri and the Old Testament account concerning the garden of Eden. It's called Canaan, Babylon, and Egypt A Comparative Theological Analysis on Creation sold by Eborn Books.

There is no official doctrine on what happens to having multiple spouse in the next life. There is a lot of speculation. So a clarification for Jacob, living women can only be sealed to one husband, while they are alive. However, when doing sealings for the dead, women are sealed to every man they were legally married to. According to Elder Maxwell, it is one of the things that will be resolved in the eternities so we don't need to worry about it.

    • @ChaChaDancin
      @ChaChaDancin 27 дней назад

Nope. Women can only be sealed “for time and eternity” to one man. If the husband dies, the woman can be re-married and sealed “for time only” to that man.
Men can be sealed “for time and eternity” to more than one woman in a similar scenario.
Unless the doctrine has changed in the past few years since I left the Mormon organization. They do that.

@@ChaChaDancin The very first time I went to the temple, back in the mid 80s, I was proxy for my grandfather, while I had two cousins who were proxy for my grandmother's first two husbands. The has never been a limit on how many times a wife can be sealed to husbands. The only limit, as I stated before, is that a living woman can only be sealed to one living man.
Neither the doctrine nor policy has changed, you were just apparently ignorant of sealing policies.
You seem to be confusing policies for the living with those for work for the dead.

@@brettmajeske3525 you didn’t catch the nuance of what I said. There are different types of sealings.
Besides, they have changed the temple ordinances many times over the years.

@@ChaChaDancin There is no nuance in your response, unless you think conflating proxy and living ordinance policies is nuance. I was specific and explicit in my topic and example, and your response dealt with neither. While there have been policy and presentation changes, the one I mention has been around since at least the 1950s, so your ignorance could not be based on any such changes.

In Christianity, God is Ultimate Reality. In Mormonism, God is like the Buddha: he does not determine the conditions of existence but discovers within existence what he thinks are the pre-existing law of existence. Mormonism does not have a Christian doctrine of creation but a doctrine of organization. As with so many things, Christians and Mormons use the same words but the dictionaries are very different.
