Well done reminding us to slow down and think before we jump in...it seems obvious, but sometimes it's the simple things that cause the biggest problems.
Did that exact same thing last week. Except I was outside... and it was raining... what a fun week that was. Good thing was my car has dedicated jack and jack-stand points at all four wheels and a jack point at the front. Makes things a lot easier. Keep those videos coming. I'm horrible at planning, myself - more precisely, I tend to do most of the planning work afterwards - so I have a feeling they will help a lot for my future whatever I end up doing next on the car. :)
looking forward to this particular video, as i myself bung up my rocker panel lift points sometimes, cuz i lift my car hundreds of times during ownership.
Brilliant video, looking forward to your mods, specially love that you say that you won't use money on wheel dollys, but they are just behind you on the top of the car :) :)
I just started a complete re-spray on a Chevy Colorado at my home garage. I spent most of the week after work just organizing and cleaning the shop. It's pulled in on an angle and I disassembled it all last night. It's soo roomy, and organized out there, makes it so much nicer to work.
Some folks look at a large project, or small projects within that project car and wonder, how much money is needed? I think of that too, but more I think about how long each thing takes. Time management is crucial!
Ice hockey pucks are better than using wood on the jack. Wood makes a lot of horrible, ominous creaking and splintering noises when you jack with it against the sill. They're also nigh on indestructible and you can cut a slot in the puck to locate it more firmly on the sill if you want.
That's what I use I even took some of Scotty Kilmers vids and used my dermal to make a v cut on a puck so there's a place for the pinch weld to go with out crushing it
Protech makes jack pads that are slotted to allow you to raise the car without fear of folding over the pinch weld. Had mine for several years and works like a champ. protechproducts.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=35_37
Hello HumbleMechanic! I enjoy and truly value your posts. They are among the best on the net. I've seen all of them and am looking forward to seeing the next one. I have a 2013 Tiguan which will need repairs soon. Where can I get repair literature like a repair manual for this car? Thanks!
The slammed mk3 jetta ive been driving for almost 5 years now is finally getting its turn as the project car. Its very difficult to jack it up to work on it with conventional jack stands i am forced to use a jack with a lock bar in it for the most part.
cool.. I thought that was the best as well That seems to be very quick even in stock format. I was even thinking you can do a mk3 jetta as well. 4 doors for family and suped vr6 for performance. just an idea
BMW has decided to stop giving you a rear central jacking point, and they are like MB in the sense of not using pinch welds (so the jacking points are just points, and that's where you'll want your stand to be). Lot's of people use the rear subframe mounts. Lots of people also use the rear diff, and then damage the diff/diff mount, so just because people use it doesn't make it a good idea. Is the subframe mount a safe bet on any car?
At least it's the mk3 gti/jetta. Not the mk4. i like how sleek that platform( bodies on both) and the aaa vr6. That engine is smooth rinning and especially if you jump on the throttle. It will go and does not hesitate. Mark 4 seems to be delayed before it takes off. Do me a favor, I am eager to see this project from start to finish. i would like to see the front end your putting on. was that from a jetta or was it from another gti? Also are you changing the rear end as well? I was also thinking you could do the same thing to a mark 3 jetta. That way you can haul the family easily while being able to go fast and have 4 doors at the same time
I also hope that you make the choice to install adjustable coilovers instead of lowering springs. Ive broken proper higher end springs on my 2.slow the vr6 will smash the springs to pieces
Awesome vid, could'nt find this project in your playlist section though - Such a playlist would be neat :D Greetings from a playlist loving future autotech from Sweden :) Edit: I just found the playlist :D
I'll be the first of many to tell you, you never Jack a MK3 by the front rockers, nor use Jack stands on the rockers. There is a jack stand flat at the rear of the subframe. Its near impossible to find a MK3 with clean rockers because of this. The rip plate in the rocker will not support the vehicle. You can see yours crush 3-4mm as you let it down.
Just seen you on Eric's channel to follow you about German cars. WHATDOYUHKNOW? A beautiful mutha fuckin VR6, and a MK3 GTI at that! Best class of VR6's next to the Corrado, and R32 24v?

Just got done watching all of the videos for this project! looks legit and I'm excited for future videos! keep up the good work man
Really liked this video. Never thought about what goes into getting a project set up like that, you have some great ideas for it.
Was just about to jack up my MK3 GTI VR6 for the first time today, perfect timing Charles!
+The Jank Garage awesome. Be safe!
Really looking forward for the next video, mate

This is awesome man really looking forward to the videos

+Jesper Mikkelsen that's a creeper. It's for laying on, not for moving the car.
A clean work environment is a fun work environment
+marcofx3 especially when it's a long term project like this one.

Looking foward to it man.
Cheers from Brazil :)

that's a good tip, I got a few extra laying around that I can hack up haha

+peglor yep pucks are pretty awesome too. I wonder if I have any floating around the house.

Why would you even slam a car that low to begin with?
No way it makes that much performance difference, plus it looks really shady and silly

Can't wait!!!!1

I think that may end up happening. I'd rather go springs, but I think coilovers will be the route I go.

+Dan iel hahaha. Right!
Awesome 😀👍🏻
finally someone howm tels me where i can savely jack up my car!
I was curious which vr6 do you the 95-98 or the 99-05
+Brian Skinner 1998
Sorry i didn't seem to get your reply.
As a diy how would you go about replacing rear beam/subframe bushings on a 99 mk4 Jetta
+Harry Ben we will probably do that on this car. It will be pretty similar on mk4
+HumbleMechanic will be very thankful if you do and do you recommend the polyurethane bushings over oem
I was going to ask if your studio was at your house
+Brian Skinner yep sure is. It's nice to to walk out the door and film or play with cars.
Do you have a Patreon or something? I'd love to contribute to your projects :)
I don't, but I got something even better in the works. It's gonna be freaking awesome.
Thank you so much for your support.

+Afistnu the R32 holds my heart at the top of that list.
Aint that the truth. Thats what sucks about apartment living. I just end up working on cars with my uncle, which i enjoy
sooo when does this bad ass swap happen? really hoping you make the videos like 30 min long!
+MechRider89 there are some longer format vids coming for sure.
Tip, use shoes with steel toe. not sandals. I've dropped things on my toes and it hurts.
+LOUDPIPES SAVELIVES good advice. But advice I'll probably not follow.
I hate wearing shoes. So I am sure I'll have to pay the price for that. Hahah
HumbleMechanic Let me know when you do, so I can tell you told you so.
I sent you a pm on your facebook page!
+LOUDPIPES SAVELIVES hahah deal!!! I'll check FB when I can
Staging a car is easy, roll into the lights slowly.
Yup
+James Schrumm hahah.
Well done sir well done indeed (for a VW tech) Just kidding bro!
+Joseph Tucci hahahah. That's fair
Anyone else be like Charles you've got wheel dollys on the roof when he said he didn't want to spend 200 dollars on dollys
+Thebamerx98 yep that's a creeper. Wheel dollys are a little different.
+HumbleMechanic from the angle it looks a bit like a wheel dollys
its a VR6 not a GTI
Is this in reply to another comment?
tommy payne it is a GTI VR6
