I am now going to go though all the sorted videos, find every benuendo, and write them all down in a book. Finally we will have Fifty Shades of Ben.
shana weiss please, please do this. I think the sorted community would truly love this
may i ask for an update , i wish to read this book
@@jodiescrivener8005 I have no update...im so sorry to have failed you all
@@midget11100 noooooooo! Oh well never mind I was just curious 😂
What's in Sri Lankan roasted curry powder: cumin, coriander, fenugreek, turmeric, mustard seeds, cloves, peppercorns, pandan leaves, roasted curry leaves. Loads do their own versions at home. So excited you're drinking lion and eating Sri Lankan food!
Ruwani Hettiarachchi The Lion was delicious... and cheers for the spice list. We were right about the pandan leaves... but thanks for all the rest!
SORTED Food I feel like Ben replied to this one.
SORTED Food It's honestly pretty similar to our regular curry powder - every house has their own version of it - but it's then roasted either in a pan or in the oven. YAAY, so happy you're making Sri Lankan food! You should consider going there for Lost and Hungry. Sri Lankan food is very unique, and sadly, not too many know about it!
Ruwani Hettiarachchi I
I am Sri Lankan, and I approve this video.
Mike screaming "GET AWAY" when Ben moved behind him cracked me up😂
Just a little handy tip: roti is traditionally made with wheat flour. So it's not very crisp but softer and less flaky.
The curry leaves are traditionally added directly to the oil (usually the first ingredient along with mustard seeds) to get rid of the bitter leafy flavour. I usually chop up curry leaves so that each bite is moderately flavoured with the curry leaf taste!
Also yes, you're right about the Pandan leaves in the dark roast curry powder.
Great food you guys! :)
Nishtha Kaushik The curry leaf tip is really handy! Thanks!
Please never stop making these. They're my favorite!
Danielle Burr We've just tested a bunch of new recipes to shoot some more... we love them too!
+SORTED Food i'm Sri Lankan, I grew up there and now i visit my family over there every few years. I make the dish you made in this video, I thought you would like to know the proper name for this dish. It is called kothu roti.
The cat on Barry's neck in the end picture is absolutely everything right now ♥
I don't know why I'm watching this at 3am. It's cold and rainy and now I'm hungry.
This is my favorite episode of this series.
Are u Sri Lankan?
soniakolluru No :)
Oh my bad. Just realised your last name is Singh which is a common Punjabi surname. :)
soniakolluru I'm Fijian Indian and I was born/raised NZ :). Not exactly sure what part of India I'm from.
Love that you guys are doing Sri Lankan street food and I'm absolutely thrilled that you guys have done so much research even down to finding out what the word kottu means 😊....there are many variations of this now, one which includes roast chicken and soft creamy cheese
Dark curry powder has pandan leaves, curry leaves, coriander seeds, cinnamon, cumin, jeera, nutmeg, black mustard seeds, cloves and cardamom...hope this helps :)
ayyyyy sri lanka never gets any recognition for its insane food apart from what exists in india (don't get me wrong i love my butter chicken)
thanks for sharing the culture!!
It's also because when Sri Lankans have a channel trying to promote Sri Lankan food and culture. A very few supports it. 😊
I'm glad you're including our culture into your dishes! we are often forgotten, such as many small cultures... More of this please
Those leaves are called Curry leaves if i'm not mistaken. You guys should really travel to Sri Lanka on a food journey and taste more authentic Sri Lankan food like milk rice , string hoppers, hoppers, Pittu etc !
I am 99% sure I will never ever recreate this dish, but I'm just gonna watch this video all over again because of the faces Mike makes at 04:27 and 05:57.
YES. FINALLY! Best food in the world :D So glad you guys are introducing the rest of the world to this type of food. SL has so many unique foods that no other nation has. The most popular type of Kotthu is however with barbecued chicken and some cheese as well. Pillawoos classic aka Sri Lanka's version of Subway at 4AM after a night out.
Please do some more Sri Lankan recipes - stringhoppers, hoppers, hot butter cuttlefish...so many!
Keep making these videos, you guys are awesome x
Manjaree Gamage Pillawoos :')
Charlie Brooks best ever right!
Manjaree Gamage Hell to the yeah
This video makes me super happy and proud. Because it's nice to see other people giving credit to Sri Lankan food as credit is due. 🤗
Staying in is new going out. But only if you have great food and jamaicans with you.
Arrynek01 The Jamaicans are the most important part of that... Particularly if they bring beer can with them... SORRY!
I'm so excited about this video because I'm a srilankan. I think sorted food should visit Sri Lanka for more exciting street food, you guys will love it! The curry leaves should be added to the hot oil first to take the leafs bitterness off. Kothu here is made in various methods.
OMG I cant believe I nearly missed this episode!!! You Made Koththu Roti!!!
Jaffna curry powder is lesser known but oh so gooood.
So excited about this video because I'm going to fly to Sri Lanka this summer 😍
OMG have fun! You absolutely have to go to Kandy. Also you have to go to Gaul face, there is street kothu. This particular vendor calls it a dolphin
thanks so much! i'm so grateful for your tips
Sophia Havlik And for history, I would also check out Anuradhapura. The temples in particular. And you might enjoy Seegiriya!
thank you so much :)
Sophia Havlik if you like hiking and that sort of stuff, definitely go to Horton Plains in Nuwara Eliya! As for beaches, I recommend Uppuveli beach and Pigeon island for snorkeling. :D Hope you enjoy your visit.
Yes! I grew up in srilanka and this is classic street food and the noise is incredible. Well done.
you guys are the coolest, i need a group mates who enjoy eating and cooking as much as i do!
Guyyysss oh my God I am soooo thrilled that you are featuring a dish from my home land Sri Lanka 😃 Koththu is just the tip of the iceberg... we have zillions of yummy delicious dishes... which are... yes! Spicy!!!!
So you wanted to know what was in curry powder so here you goo
Coriander seed, curry leaves, cloves, cardommon, cinnamon, some raw rice, fenugreek, mustard seed, sweet cummin, cummin and red chillies pieces.. so you basically blitz all this together and it turns in to this aromatic crazy powder which we use to cook all kinds of meat 😃
So there you gooo...
So excited btw and thanks for all the yummy videos 😘
Thank you guys for repping my country well! Kottu is one of the dishes that I recommend to everyone when I tell them about Sri Lankan food, and now anyone can make it!
I love Mikes scared and confused face throughout this episode, especially when Ben started to do the pottery scene from Ghost and when Mike was holding the very large carrot.
Thanks for the humor in the kitchen!
I'm an Australian Sri Lankan and I'm so excited to see this! You guys did a great job!! :D
it's awesome seeing you guys try out recipes from my home country! for a bit more Sri Lankan cuisine, we also have small appetizers called short-eats, things like rolls, cutlets, and patties, that I think you guys would do a great job making. one of the main traditional dishes, milk rice with a sort of onion sambal (kiri bath and lunumiris), is pretty darn simple and would be great to watch you guys make!
You guys never fail to make me smile. Thanks for making my day! :)
your rotti is pretty crispy, but other than that, it's great to see Sri Lankan grub on Sorted. nice one!
Love the idea of Big Night In! I really enjoy these videos.
LMFAO!!! oh Mike your face when ben says " i got so excited i had to call james over" i cant, i can't.
An do we have penis envy with the carrot, cause i mean its just a carrot :P
Special shout out to the dude in glasses because he is not only educated about the process of making kottu, but he also knows the history! Lankan certified 😉🇱🇰👌🏽!
The photo at the end of the video just made my day! And I made the chocolate brioche flower at work today and everyone was so amazed and loved it :) (I have a summer job in a cafeteria, and I get to bake something good, my choice, on Fridays)
Lion beer! Oh man, I miss Sri Lanka. What a beautiful country.
Proud to see u'll doing a video on Sri Lankan street food. Anyway I'm a bit extra excited coz this food's actual birth is from my hometown called Kattankudy (It is situated in eastern Sri lanka). Thank you guys.
Thanks for spotlighting Sri Lanka, Sorted!
I'm glad you guys made this video. It is true that your rotti was a bit too crispy for the authentic Kottu roti like others have mentioned, but I think the crispyness gives it an interesting texture.
The curry powder is a ground mixture of corriander, cumin, cinnamon, fennel seeds, cardomon, cloves, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves, roast it and you get roasted curry powder. There are other variations as well, made by mixing curry powder with chilly powder.
i've just realised that i've been subscribed to you guys for 3 years. . . holy mushrooms. amazing how fast time flies.
Danielle Louise Suffering Sweetcorn! That really is a long thyme, thanks for sticking with us!!
I'm from Sri Lanka but living in Melbourne and it's awesome that you guys are eating Kothu!! Made me realize how much I miss eating it! :D
As a Sri Lankan, so glad you love kottu rotti as much as I do! A popular variant back home is chicken & cheese kottu. So. Good.
Nice to see some Kotthu. I reckon the spice mix has curry leaves, really common in Sri Lankan, South Indian and Maldivian cuisine. Shoutout from Maldives btw. This has become my new fav cooking show.
When did you guys visit srilanka? Kottu roti is one of my favorites :) Lots of love from srilanka
oh how did I miss this when it came out? this is literally my life!
looks great guys
Ha! Ben's face when when the anchorman reference was used. Priceless.
I like that you don't cut out the mistakes and banter people make
I completely lost it at Mike's facial expressions during this video especially the one where he is holding the carrot
Barry's face at about 0:53 when they tell him how much chilli is in there😱😂😍 I just want to hug him😂
Hey Guys!!! Ben, Barry, Mike and Jamie..... I love watching your videos and i really enjoy them. So glad to see Ben's twist on our food "Kottu". Keep up the great work guys!!
im srilankan and this is by far my favourite food.. cant beat the taste u get there but this looks about close to it :)
SORTED Food As a Sri Lankan Malay, I have to say this recipe is soooo good! Well done guys! I would love for you to go to Sri Lanka, and then maybe to Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. The cuisine is so different to Indian cuisine; in Sri Lanka, the food is influenced by the Malays, the Portuguese, the Dutch and South India!!
Thanks for doing this SORTED Food . This makes me realize how much i love food from my mother country. Hope you enjoyed it too. :)
Yay I'm an srilankan and it's great to finally see a dish from us.
Mike's facial expressions and the Ghost thing cracked me up!
You have finally made some of my culture food thank you sorted food!
thank you soo much for doing a sri lankan food kothu roti
im a sri lankan and im soo happy to c this in ur channel :)
Mike, your face at 4:35 is fabulous. I had to rewind and watch it again.
Hi, can you tell me what you do with the gravy? Do you put it back in the dish at the end or do you use it for an other dish?
Props to Ben for always keeping it "professional" during Mike's innuendo faces
Seeing the Sorted boys make sri lankan food makes me so happy! :)
At this point, I'm beginning to think that Ben makes these innuendos on purpose.
Mike your facials are hilarious. Every face you made futing that video had me rolling with laughter
This is really amazing... Thank you for sharing the most famous Sri Lankan street food with the world..I think the rotti should be more soften and you should definitely use the lamb curry to spice up the koththu rotti...Thumbs up guyz... I really like your channel.
Neyomal Gunathilaka And here is my recipe for the wonderful Sri Lankan curry powder,
Raw curry powder (For yellow/white curries)
Coriander seeds - 2Tbsp
Cumin seed, Fennel seed, Raw rice, Brown mustard seeds - 1Tbsp (each)
Cinnamon stick - 1 inch
Curry leaves - 1 spring
Pandan leaves - 1 inch
(Optional)
Black pepper corns - 1/2 Tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 Tsp
Cloves, Cardamom pods, Red dried chillies - 3 (each)
Turmeric powder - 1Tsp
Grind all the above spices together to a fine powder
Dark Roasted curry powder (Mostly for meat)
Dry roast all the above spices well except turmeric powder until you get the wonderful smell from the spices and then grind it to a powder.
May I suggest you guyz to make a wonderful Sri Lankan style Chicken curry using this roasted curry powder.
Thanks..
Im a sri lankan and I also like kothu roti ur one is good im so happy about u make this
I think you guys forgot to mention about the beer you are drinking and I am sorry if you did. It is Lion lager as I can see from the bottle and it is brewed in Sri Lanka as well. :)
Well done team and thanks. Btw there is a version with milk and cheese... Anyway I'll ask my mom about things in curry powder. We make those at home.
its time you ask the questions from a Sri Lankan! like ME! :D
boys, your roti is too crispy for kottu. but everything else spot on. you could've used coconut oil.
I noticed that too! It was more like Papadam! 😉
Yeah
+tharshika Fighter but I guess when combined with the curry and other ingredients it will lose some crunch
Constance Rivera but still it wil never have the same texture as kuttu rotti. and it dipens for each person how they like their kottu
Yeah true, but I mean kudos to them for making the rotting from scratch, like my parents just buy the rotti pre made
This looks amazing! Thanks for uploading this!
i dont think ben said "small balls" enough, and did anyone else see mike's eyebrows when there was a shot of his face. I'm dieing 😂😂
As a Sri Lankan Canadian I was quite happy to see this made, and the recipe was quite spot on. Although I think the roti was a bit to crispy...however it should be fine when it absorbs all the gravy of the curry. Nevertheless it looks amazing!
WITH A BAD BITCH THat CAME FROM SRI LANKA
Everybody knows that im a motherf*$£kn monster!
This is so easy and delicious. Thank you so much for the reciepe. My favourite by far ;)
Well done guys. I can't blv I'm only now seeing this video after 3 years. I was so psyched when I saw this. I've been hoping you touch on sri Lankan food for a long time (my beautiful paradise island). Just a tip if u make this again. The godhamba doesn't get this crispy by any means. It's more of a chewy and stretchy roti. Your dough balls were too small to start off with. And there is no need to soak them in oil, just coating them with your hands with oil is more than enough and when you're stretching them out add a little oil again to your surface. Also lamb would get marinated in curd, but milk can also do the trick. And the leaves are called rampè in sri Lanka. English word is pandan leaves. There are also karapincha leaves in there. English word is curry leaves. I would say the most famous type of Kothu in sri Lanka is roast chicken kothu. If u come to sri Lanka go to pilawoos and try it.
This would be so fun! Sri Lankan street food party here I come!
Me & my mates had, big nights in, back in the 70 & 80s on a regular basis. Lovely times. PEACE
You guys should make a Persian dish! You should try making "Fesenjoon"! It's a stew made from ground walnuts, chicken, and a pomegranate paste, and it is eaten with rice. Absolutely delicious!
Hello over there!
of course I'm too late but those leaves could be bay leaves or also Curry leaves ;)
both have such a unique and wonderful flavour and are Kind of the heart of each Indian or north srilankan dish ;)
i would love to give that doughy thing a go, didn't get the name of the bread/fried wheat dough!!! it seems fun to make!
It's Godamba Rotti 😊 but it's a very moist, paratha kinda rotti, but it's NOT parata! In this video the rotti is too crispy ☺️
Give it a go and see! Good luck 😊
michelle! thanks ;))
Palak paneer with naan is my favorite food at the moment. My favorite food changes depending on my mood.
This is called Kothu or koththu roti is a Sri Lankan dish made from Godhamba roti and vegetables, egg and/or meat, and spices; the bread is described as similar to parotta and roti canai.
Looks very good! Though I am not a fan of koriander. I guess you could just leave it out or replace it with a different herb?
Brecht in sri lanka we normally don't use koriander :) you can make koththu roti with any sri lankan style curries :) and veggies, eggs and soft parata rotti :)
its actually spelt coriander and in the usa it's called cilantro
Rachael Osborne In Dutch it's spelt with a K.
You don't have to put coriander, you can add curry leaves instead, that's what we put. 😊
I love how the intro says "two of us will cook up something to share" but that really just means Ben and someone else will cook something up
Great video! I wonder if you could do this gluten free?
I feel so bad for the cat around Barry's neck. It just looks so sad. I imagine it thinking 'I just came over cause I heard the word fish... How did it end up this way?"
Kottu is the most delicious and loved Sri Lankan Street Food of all time. Thumbs Up for the show (y)
Why don't you visit Sri Lanka for a FOOD Journey ....
+Lakmal Embuldeniya I second that!!!!
yass
How do you think of/make your recipes? I was just wondering because I would like to make my own cook book but have little inspiration for recipes
Your video is amazing ....... and since you asked what's in the curry powder.......Sri Lankans use 2 types of curry powders also known as "THUNA PAHA KUDU". One is raw curry powder and the other is roasted curry powder. The raw one only has Coriander seeds, fennel and cumin seeds wich are sun dried before making the powder, and the roasted one has coriander, cumin, fennel, cardamon, fenugreek, cinnamon, curry leaves, chilies, pepper, mustard and pandan leaves. Both taste very different. And also another small use full tip for you guyz..... Sri Lankans don't use coriander leaves in our dishes.
I'm gonna make this for a very close friend of mine who happens to be from Sri Lanka. Thanks guys!
Radia Tasnim Awesome! Let us know how you get on! Pics or it didn't happen ;-)
All in good time :D
This is really late, and I've seen this several times, but I just now noticed the kitty on Barry's shoulder at the end!!!
Love Barry's cat around the neck at the end haha!
"GET AWAY!!!!" Mike never fails to make me laugh.
If you guys are coming to northwestern Canada on lost and hungry Jamie should try dry-smoked salmon it's SO much better, all of the flavour with none of the sliminess!
I don't know if this recipe is limited to sri lanka because there is a very similar recipe from my home country, Kerala (South India). It is called kothu paratha and it is really really good. Unlike this recipe, the paratha is soft and thicker than the roti in this recipe. Also, its cooked with scrambled eggs, onions, chillies, curry leaves and the meat of your choice. I love it!
SORTED Food The leaves are pandan leaves just dried, we call it rampe colla (Rampe leaf)
For the intro Mike tells us there is TWO OF US in the kitchen cooking but what keeps me thinking is why is it just Ben and one out of the three (Mike, Barry, and Jamie) I Challenge Mike, Barry and/or Jamie to created a Big Night In that will match or even beat Ben's level of cooking
Proud to be Sri Lankan. Everyone has to try Kottu/Kothu/Koththu Roti.
The leaves are definitely pandas leaf as well as curry leaves. Usually provides the authentic fragrance of a Northern Sri Lankan curry
Love this video! For a future suggestion, could you maybe do some super healthy but delicious treats to snack on?! like protein balls and stuff? it would be super helpful!!
I think they already have a recipe for protein balls, you can search for it.
The bread reminds me of Trinidadian Paratha Roti (Buss up Shut) which is served with a soupy Channa Chat Masala or a Trini style Chicken curry.
May I ask where you got the LeD bulb 'S' in the background? Lovely food by the way :)
0:52 Barry looked scared of the prospect eating a meal that has four type of chillies in them. :D
