5:50 the very best fries you get in the Markt, Reitz. In normal times, and in the summer in particular, there’s always a long line of people. Cant miss it. Yay, my city! I studied there.
As much as people don't like reading boring history, it is more appealing to see and feel history. It takes us through a journey when we visit a historical place
It's cool when a good vlogger you're following posts content about your hometown, bit awkward too when you're used to seeing him in faraway countries. Thumbs up!
I studied there for 4 years some 10 years ago. Seeing this brings back a lot of good memories. Definitly one of the most beautiful towns in the Netherlands.
Maastricht is indeed one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, together with Nijmegen and Voorburg (all 1st century AD). Nijmegen definitely is worth a visit. You may also like Deventer, Groningen, Zwolle and Amersfoort
In the neighborhood of Rotterdam, one could have visited Schiedam, Gouda and especially Dordrecht. I recommend taking the Public transport boats to Rotterdam from there. Take the ones that stop in Kinderdijk. In summer you can visit the Zeelandic cities of Goes, Middelburg and Vlissingen and also Veere. Veere is magical on warm summer evenings.
Groningen is quite a drive, but it also has a distinctive character because of it's relatively isolate place, it's still quite lively despite covid and it's of course the ultimate cycling city. Zutphen and Elburg are a quite a bit smaller but very nice looking too.
I only discovered your channel 5 days ago and I enjoy your content I live in Maastricht myself so this video is great. indeed you went to the best fries snack room their amazing anyway i hope you have a lot of fun in our country and god bless your brother
Maastricht is indeed a beautiful city. I was born and still live here. When its normal, it's a very nice, warm city at all seasons but around Christmas and carnaval, we say Vasteloavend, the most. The church with the Porsche and Jeep is no longer used as a church but is a research institute. And cannons were fired through the holes in the old walls to protect the city from threats. When you are in Maastricht again (after covid-19), you can walk up in the red tower on the vrijthof where you have a nice view.
That church has indeed a laboratory inside. It is rebuild into seperate parts. One is the lab, one is a space for cultural events and it is also someone’s home. That children’s playground you filmed is someone’s backyard. Btw, now you’re in the south, one tip to drive with your rental car: the mergellandroute. You’ll see the Netherlands are not flat everywhere. And it is very beautiful
Since it's the Sinterklaas and christmas season maybe you should find a good pastry bakery and try some of the season specials like speculaas, banketletter, borstplaat. I especially recommend 'gevuld speculaas' which is very different from the other kinds of speculaas. It's soft speculaas with almond paste in between. And there are of course the all season regulars like boterkoek and bitterkoekjes. It's really worth it to get it from a proper bakery instead of the supermarket, and pay a bit more.
The Basilica also houses an art and there's a holy treasury. There's probably a restoration preservation lab and the playground may be for a day care or orphanage. Or maybe a clinic.
That bridge you where on was also the oldest bridge in the Netherlands from 1280. And that church you visit was also the oldest one, dating back to 560ad. And if you are still there, take a tour in the caves!
Brought me memories of my student life in this beautiful old city of Maastricht ❤️. I believe you might have visited the Netherlands American Cemetery and War Memorial too. It's just under 12km from the city center.

Welkom in Nederland :) Btw about the church. I don't know that one personally. But we tend to use churches for more than just religious activities. Some churches are even turned into homes. Most people don't go to church anymore so they get into disuse. Partially because of this we use them for other activities. It preserves the building actually over time.
Thanks for the vid. The art is because of the yearly carnaval that Maastricht has. And the fries at Reitz are also the oldest fries in the Netherlands, because of the proximity of Belgium. They are delicious.
The church at around 1130 is no longer a church and is a residence of some really rich guy. Apparently, you can also rent a room inside this church but it's very expensive. I used to live just down that street :P
And if I am not mistaken is Heerlen(Coriovallum older then Nijmegen) on the othe otherside of the road from my appartmentcomplex there is museum with a Roman bathhouse in it what is over 2000 years old
Reitz was definitely my favorite place to eat fries when I was there. The only downside was they only accepted cash. But I prefer these Belgian style fries over Dutch ones.
Wait u been in Maastricht I live like 20 minutes away from there it’s so cool to find out people actually come here besides people from Germany/Belgium 😂
Maastricht is also next to both the French part of Belgium (Wallonia) as the Dutch/Flemish part of Belgium (Flanders). Due to the lockdown measures all restaurants and musea are closed. The statues show carnival celebrating persons.
Next time in Limburg eat a Limburgse vlaai, a kind of pie looking like a pizza. I don't know if you are a hindu and therefore may not eat beef, but another Limburgian delicacy is zoervleis. In Brabant, Limburg and Flanders another delicacy to try is 'frieten met stoofvlees', which are French fries with beef stew. Don't ever call French fries 'patat' instead of 'friet' south of the rivers crossing the Netherlands from east to west.
