Brilliant! The CEL Shader was a first for me and turned out to be really cool. I was even able to impress a client with some cool isometric illustrations. BTW, to really crank up the quality in the shadows I had to switch to Physical and up the sampling quality. Is there a way to do this while staying in Standard render? Jez - there's so much stuff in C4D I wouldn't have a chance if it weren't for tutorials like this. Thanks again!
Hey Peter! Glad you could impress your clients, thats what its all about! :) I'm unsure about what you mean about the shadows. If you're using Hard Shadows you should only need to worry about upping the antialiasing settings and you should have nice sharp edges!
Sorry, my bad - I was talking about AO grain. The trick to fix it was to jump into Physical render, keep Sampling Quality at LOW, but up the Ambient Occlusion Subdivision (Max) to 5 or even 6. Same speed but a lot higher quality in both edges and AO grain!
Great tutorial. very helpful. i am trying to emulate the typography style you used on 'move' i was looking at how you used a spline wrap on a capsule but the very ends of my letters go to a point rather than with yours they are fatter and rounder. is this a quick fix . any help would be appreciated thanks
Hi EJ, Thanks for this more than clear tutorial! Is there any way to manage alpha channel with sketch and toon render activated? It could be useful for doing transparent things... Merci beaucoup
Thanks for your response!! Yes, like glass effect with simple reflection on it, I'm thinking about the effect you've done on your nice game boy model! jmp.sh/Jbax57w On this one, I'm trying to have windows transparent with simple diagonal stripes on I've tried to manage with transparency and alpha channels on a simple plane model but nothing seems to work when rendering jmp.sh/QCXiWbS It is like S&T doesn't care about it! Still digging! :)
So many things to discover thanks to your funky tuts! For the moment I only model simple things for training, to progress and become confident for professional projects! See you in an other tutorial :)
Great tutorial. One question though: in the "how to do it in CD4 lite" portion, after you add the Lumas effect, you go back and click "layer" to add the colorize effect. I'm using C4D lite and don't see that option in the context menu. Any idea how I could find it?
Are you using the latest version of C4D Lite? I think you might...so what happened with the latest R19 version of C4D lite is they removed the Layer shader which is super annoying...so what I suggest is using an older version of AE that still can use the R16 version of C4D Lite.
In case someone else comes across this comment: You can click through: "window-Customize -Customization palletes. From there, you can (and should) add ANY c4d shortcut or tool very easily to your toolbar, don't forget to save your modified layout under customization-save layout as (and save as startup, so it starts up with this layout) This will create 2 new layout options to switch to under the layout tab (top right). -my favorites are: loop selection , reverse normals - psr update - etc.
Hi. I am wondering about the first option why my shader shows jagged borders among the colors whereas yours looks sharp borders although I checked raytraced (Hard) and set the same infinite light like yours.
I was trying to do the lumas shader method using C4D lite and I didn't get very far. Instead of getting a shaded effect the entire object was filled with a block color that varied depending on the illumination. Any pointers?
Hello eyedesyn! I'm Rodrigo Araujo and I live in Brazil, u can help me with a question I have had with Cinema 4D? a project I onte animating a tape and I want each side of her stay with different colors. The detail is that it can not be an editable object because it has an animation using the Sweep. What can I do ? I am very grateful if you can help! I admire your work!
may i ask? does low poly building actually use this?, i always manage the light and material but couldnt get rid of the shading, its just looks very very flat
Hi, i'm kinda new to cinema 4D and running into problems, please help. when I play a moving image in the my timeline, the image despairs, the only thing that is seen is the lines moving from the objects, please help.?.
thank you e.j for the tutorial. it has been taken me ages but i am now understand it. i wanted to ask based on cel shading.. vimeo.com/141291178/a103c61a85, i saw this scene from the movies "we are your friends" and i wanted to ask if you have an idea how it was made. Can it be applicable with the cel shading in Cinema 4D or it something different
Hey man, that's all traditional frame by frame cel animation it looks like. Those liquid effects would be very hard to do but creating figures and all that would be easy enough to do in C4D using Cel Shader.
Thank you for your amazing tutorials! Defenetely would like to see more of this subject. It blends with flat design in Ae smoothly.
You got it! Thanks for watching!
Watching now in 2023, still loving it!
Haha, my eyes went wide when I realized I had the sketch and cartoon in my version of c4d... Thanks :D

Hey man, great vid, How do you get lights to cast shadows onto surfaces?
thansk fot the tutorial
Thanks for watching!
Hi, EJ
Can you please tell me on how to make this type of shading style? If your response to this...thank you very much for the help
Hey there! Not sure what you mean, I show you how to make this type of shading in the tutorial!
Great tutorial. very helpful. i am trying to emulate the typography style you used on 'move' i was looking at how you used a spline wrap on a capsule but the very ends of my letters go to a point rather than with yours they are fatter and rounder. is this a quick fix . any help would be appreciated thanks
figured it out...changed the mode on the spline wrap to keep length, extended the length of the capsule to fit and played with the size graph:)
Glad you figured it out! Thanks for watching!
I want my cinema 4d layout to look like yours! love the color scheme how did you do that?
You can download my UI Scheme here
www.eyedesyn.com/product/after-effects-cc-2014-cinema-4d-dark-ui-scheme/
thanks is there a PC version for this ?
Should work on PC!
Hi EJ,
Thanks for this more than clear tutorial!
Is there any way to manage alpha channel with sketch and toon render activated? It could be useful for doing transparent things...
Merci beaucoup
You mean like a beer mug or something like that? There is ways to do it by loading up cel shaders in either Transparency or Alpha!
Thanks for your response!!
Yes, like glass effect with simple reflection on it, I'm thinking about the effect you've done on your nice game boy model!
jmp.sh/Jbax57w
On this one, I'm trying to have windows transparent with simple diagonal stripes on
I've tried to manage with transparency and alpha channels on a simple plane model but nothing seems to work when rendering
jmp.sh/QCXiWbS
It is like S&T doesn't care about it! Still digging! :)
Get it!
Just a gradient on alpha channel, no cel texture!
As simple as that! :)
jmp.sh/0Lm3LHv
Looks awesome, Pierre! Thanks for sharing your progress! Is this for a project or do you model objects like this for fun?
So many things to discover thanks to your funky tuts!
For the moment I only model simple things for training, to progress and become confident for professional projects! See you in an other tutorial :)
Thanks you, more more more..............
Thank you! You will get more more more :)

The luma approach even has better effect than the built-in Cel shader…
Cel Shader definitely has more options but Lumas Shader gets you most of the way there!
Neato.
sir, can you please make VR tutorial ??
I will in the future for sure!
Hey Ej, what are the script buttons you have in your layout? I see magic solo, drop to floor - what are the others?
The others are 'Axis Center To' and 'Center Parent To; shortcut keys I seem to use a lot!

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwesome!!
Thaaaaaaaankssss!
hi man, can you tell your version c4d ?
Cool! Could you tell us your PC config? PLEASE!!! :)
For this type of effect you don't need fast computers but I'm using a new Mac Pro.
2021 !
what shader do you apply for your teeths ? That look white as unreal 😁
Hi. I am wondering about the first option why my shader shows jagged borders among the colors whereas yours looks sharp borders although I checked raytraced (Hard) and set the same infinite light like yours.
might be your anti-aliasing settings need upped!
I was trying to do the lumas shader method using C4D lite and I didn't get very far. Instead of getting a shaded effect the entire object was filled with a block color that varied depending on the illumination. Any pointers?
not sure what the problem is you're having is but you might have set it up wrong.

I admire your work!
I would make it editable and instead of using the Sweep Object, use a Spline Wrap and you'll get a similar effect!
OK! I will try, thank you very much for your help!
may i ask? does low poly building actually use this?, i always manage the light and material but couldnt get rid of the shading, its just looks very very flat
You could, you'd need to be more precise with the gradient knots as they are applied to the objects.
I'm having weird stepping on the reflections. Any rounded areas are stepping and jagged, not smooth. Could you help me out?
Reflections? I didn't have any reflections turned on in this tutorial, just diffuse cel shading
eyedesyn sorry I meant the white highlights.
Go to your render settings and make sure you have antialiasing and filter set to Best
Thank you! This is what worked for me.
Hi, i'm kinda new to cinema 4D and running into problems, please help. when I play a moving image in the my timeline, the image despairs, the only thing that is seen is the lines moving from the objects, please help.?.
Are you talking about applying a .mov file as a texture?
Hello, I want ask you ,how can i render the low poly's hard line
Sorry I don't understand what you mean by the low poly's hard line?
Your system configuration please
