I have lived in Florida for over 30 years now and I'm just now finding out about these ancient sites. I have a feeling the powers that be want to keep it like that so they don't have to rewrite American (and possibly World) History. Visiting these mounds just got bumped to the top of my to-do list.
You make a very good point. Of the mounds that have been identified on public and private land, it is the largest. There may be a larger one out there somewhere. If so, it must be a huge one!
I understand there was a Native American Mound in Flagler Co. in Graham swamp which became part of Palm Coast development. This became a shopping center, interesting there was a lot of issues with those buildings , hmm, serves them right for building on sacred ground.
They didn't go thought all that trouble for nothing. I wish we were smart enough to decipher the astronomical significance of these mounds, their alignments, and their relationship to one another. This notion that ancient peoples only built shit for worship and for when they die is silly.
In many cases they definitely have astronomical alignments. The ones at Kolomoki and at Chattahoochee Landing, for example, line up perfectly with the solstice and the beginning of spring. Their engineering abilities were advanced and beyond the comprehension of most people today.
Thanks for sharing . I’m keeping a record of places to visit in the area. We have property along gulf coast. We visit 6-8 times a year.
Be sure to hit nearby Lake Jackson Mounds as well. Both are well worth a visit, as is Mission San Luis in Tallahassee.
This is great Dale. I was not aware!
Thanks for the Monticello Mound video.
You are welcome! We will have more from around Monticello before much longer.
Very nice and informative. Love our state’s history thanks
Thank you!
Us Floridians live here in this state and we don’t have a clue. Sad.
That is very true and you are right, it is very sad.

Some parks let vegetation completely obscure the mounds and some keep them cut back
This is usually due to the recommendations of Native American tribes. Many prefer to let the mounds be covered with natural growth.
Hi Mr. Dale!❤
They use to call my girlfriend in high skool.. The great mound.. Never knew why...
I would argue this is largest identified mound in Florida. I suspect there are more on private land.
