      Hi, could you give me an answer on the question above?
      Hi, im 5"10 (180cm), and drive a honda Shadow 2004 ace with normal seat. I have Short torso with long legs. Will a 41cm / 16 inch windshield fit? Or am i having a lot of buffeting then?

    • @IdealBike
      @IdealBike  4 месяца назад

      @paulcober742 with that you should have better upper wind protection but you'll increase the buffeting on the middle part of your body.

    It's funny in the 70s when bikes had no screens/fairings etc, we never even thought about windblast, although speeds were lower of course.
    However I find a naked bike is much more quieter and less buffeting up to 60mph 100kmh,as you say.
    But Yea at high speeds a good screen is essential.

    24 years old currently Honda nighthawk 750. Never had a windshield so I’m used to doing 80mph+ on interstate without windshield. I find it amusing when people saying motorcycles are “unridable” without windshield at high speeds. I also owned Harley street 750 and Kawasaki eliminator 125. No windshields on any of these bikes and still pushing. I’m afraid once I get one I won’t be able to go back lmaao

      I put a windshield on my rebel 500, went for a ride and immediately took it off after getting back for a variety of reasons:
      1. Rebel 500 is a small light bike, hence it does not have that much of an inertia force - "engine braking" increased so much, that releasing the throttle made my front suspension compress quite a lot just because of the windshield.
      2. The control and maneuverability changed a lot (to the worse)
      3. My "gut-feel" for how fast was I going disappeared - many times have I entered a corner way faster, than I would normally have and it made me realize, that I rely quite a lot on air resistance to estimate my speed
      4. Made me feel like I could not breathe. - Even though I opened all the vents on my helmet, I still felt stuffy and way too hot (in just a shirt and a leather jacket at 19C/66F) - it was making me nauseous.
      I have ridden at ~100mph and felt just fine - on the other hand if it's way too windy, then it can be a problem even at ~60mph - On those days it's simply better not to get on a bike
      I will rather look like a bug version of Jackson Pollock, have a closer feel for a ride and breathe more fresh air, than to feel like being in a vacuum in with all those other problems I have listed out. If I wanted to feel numbed down on my ride, I'd get in a car.

    Great video, I had similar findings with my Road King.
    Up to 90 kilometers an hour it was fine without the screen, better in fact and yes above 100 there was more protection with the screen but more buffeting also. I rode about 200 kilometers with the shield and then I took it off and never put it on again. It was just easier and more comfortable that way, even at speed, once you got used to it. I like the idea and the perceived practicality of the screen but the reality is (for me at least) that the loss of visibility and the increased helmet buffeting make it easier to ride my bike without a screen. I’ve done over 60,000 k’s that way including two trips across Australia and whilst I’d admit to wishing I liked using a screen or fairing, in practice I find it often takes away from the experience.

    Good video, how ever I took my screen off and find it much better. Firstly the noise is much lower and yes, I wear ear plugs. My theory about the wind is that without the screen, the wind hits you from the lower chest to the helment, but with the screen, the same amount of wind hits you on the top of the shoulders to the helment and thus pushing you harder. I've tried raising the standard screen up about 90mm but was even worse than the standard setting. Having said all that, I'm from Australia and the speed limit is around 100 to 110 klm per hr. Cheers

  • @winterpurple4587
    @winterpurple4587 9 дней назад +1

    Rather than using a windshield, I recommend just using an aerodynamic helmet. Race helmets are plentiful in the market. They're track tested and create the least amount of drag and wind resistance. They're also ultra light. As for pressure on the body you deal with that by crouching. So the faster you go the more you crouch. Again it's a track tested method where they go at speeds of 300Km/h to 360Km/h !!
    Windshields are a double whammy. Blocks air to the rider at slow speeds, creates enormous drag which saps the fuel out of the bike at high speed. Not to mention having to pay for an extra accessory! You're already carrying and wearing a helmet anyway, just use a more aerodynamic one.

    I actually like the pressure on your chest and helmet. Without it you have to constantly tense the muscles at the back of your neck and upper back to hold your head up, which after a long ride gives you neck/back ache.
    Without the windscreen the air pressure pushes you back and holds your body upright, relieving the pressure off your neck and back muscles.
    (Up to about 120kmh. Varies bike to bike, but on mine at least it starts to get too much over that.)

    NC750X: the Honda stock and touring lexan have a *cutout* but many aftermarket screens do not. This "hueco" is a ram air scoop that works with the black plastic behind it to make a high pressure zone to force air up and over the rider's helmet -- aerodynamics magic but it really reduces buffeting and wind noise. Hi, I'm more interested in the noise level with and without the screen. I ride a naked Honda street style bike. Yes, there is wind pressure on your chest, but the noise inside my helmet is just a faint rushing sound. When I ride my NC750X (DCT) with the original screen and a new taller Givi screen I have just fitted the wind noise in my helmet is roaring and intolerable. I find the noise level very stressful and it ruins the ride experience. To note, I wear Howard Leight foam pink / yellow ear plugs, whatever bike I ride. Can anyone comment on noise levels with and without screens. I definitely feel that all screens introduce noise. Also, I might be tempted to remove the black plastic deflector that shields the instrument cluster, to see if that makes any difference ?

      My daughter and I went on a 1,000-mile ride last month on a pair of 150cc scooters. Since she didn't have a windscreen on hers, I took mine off the Vespa so we would have the same experience. It was 95 degrees plus in Kansas and Nebraska. I got the reminders on the advantage of not having that hot air blasting in my face all day. And wearing an open face helmet, I sampled the varied bug life of the region. It was fun. We will do it again this fall, but the windscreen will be on.

    Riding at speed between moving lanes of traffic is suicidal, as you do at 4:00. Car drivers changing lanes simply cannot see you. For van drivers it’s a nightmare. Be patient, ride defensively and arrive alive.

    • @IdealBike
      @IdealBike  4 года назад +2

      Hi Charles! You are totally right. Indeed in some countries, line passing it's agreed by the law, but only when the cars are stationary. Still, when the cars are moving, there is too much variables going on... Totally agree. Greetings!

    • @alkaholic4848
      @alkaholic4848 3 года назад +1

      Yeah speed is the problem. I can't tell whether the video is sped up at 4:00 or not. If not then yes very bad idea.
      We call it "filtering" in the UK, it is legal but only in "slow moving traffic".
      I set myself personal rules for filtering :
      - no more than 30mph top speed
      - no more than 15mph fastER than the slowest car. (Eg if both or one lane is not moving then I wouldn't be doing anywhere near 30mph, because the most important thing when filtering is your speed relative to the rest of the traffic.)
      I don't spend my whole time looking at the speedo, it's only rough guidelines but it helps keep myself in check.
      (I cba to do the calculations to kph sorry.)
      Being able to filter through backed up / crawling traffic makes a huuuuge difference to your journey, especially in the rush hour. It's better for everybody else and the environment because you keep moving rather than holding everyone else up. But blasting through the middle of flowing traffic at high speeds is not necessary and is dangerous.
