Point of view: You are the Emperor Hadrian, and you are traveling with your entourage through the land of Bithynia. The days are either freezing cold or boiling hot. Today is one of the hot ones. You've been marching four hours in full armour. Sweat pours down your brow and onto your parched and cracking lips; your throat and lungs beg but for a minute of relief. Your feet grow achy as you become disappointed at how quickly the sandals you bought in Byzantium (supposedly made by the best cobbler in the city) have begun to fall to pieces on the badly-maintained road. You can't stop, no. The soldiers on your entourage see you as a pillar of strength, and they are just as exhausted as you; as their commander, you can't let them down. Taking your eyes from your dissolving sandals, you begin to look at the infinite blue from above--not a single cloud. Your mind begins to stray--back to your homeland, back to Spain. You begin to think about your uncle who raised you. You think about your cousin Trajan; maybe he's there now, looking down on you among the gods. (Would he be proud of his cousin?) After hours (It feels like days), you reach Heraclea. They greet you with all the fanfare befitting a living god. You rush through the pleasantries as quickly as possible, as you're embarrassed at how dirty you are and how much you smell from all that walking. Finally, you go to the city's bath. The bath has been closed for the day just to accommodate you and the entourage. You get some time to yourself in the bath. You consider swimming, but you are far too tired for that. Nevertheless, you don't let yourself slip into unconsciousness--the perfect opportunity for an assassination. Even so, the sound of light splashing echoing off the hard stone walls has a sleep-enticing quality to it. Your eyelids begin to creep down your pupils; a curtain of drowsiness is pulled over your eyes. A loud splash catches you--another soldier cannonballing into the next pool over. It's evening now. Where only hours earlier you were begging for relief from your metallic armour, you now put on multiple layers. The sky is beautiful; every star, every constellation is clearly visible. Your mind strays back to Trajan; you wonder when you'll join him among those stars. It's time for the evening performance. As the guest of honour, you get the front seat, of course. Play begins with a tribute to you--his Imperial Majesty the Princeps, sovereign of all that is under the sky. The audience tries to enjoy the play, but the cold distracts them too much, and the air is heavy, unconcerned with the actors, dances, singers. Then comes the end to the first act. You expect something grand, something that will blow you away, but instead you see a bare stage. Onto it steps a young man--not older than twenty. His costume is scant, and you can tell he's freezing. His figure is Greek marble in the flesh. His features are smooth and delicate. He clutches the lyre tightly; his whole body is stiff. As he approaches the centre of the stage, he looks at you, and his mouth--once tightly sealed--opens as if in shock. Your eyes meet; they grab onto each other, your gazes interlocked. These are the most beautiful eyes you have ever seen, golden like the corn of Italica and glistening like a river of polished copper. For two seconds, you forget everything and see only the actor's eyes. He darts his eyes away. He can't bear looking at you for too long. The actor stands on stage, opens his mouth, and says nothing. He looks back to you--those gorgeous eyes filled with terror. You smile at him and mouth, 'Come on, you can do it!' in the most encouraging way you can mouth something. Antinous takes a deep breath and begins to sing.
