Love yard jockeying (here we call it shifting), just started this December for peak season at UPS and its awesome!!!! I am currently learning how to reverse double pup trailers!!!! I do wish I could learn how to float gears tho, sucks all the mules are automatics but I do understand why!

For years, I've been on a forklift loading and unloading trailers sometimes at work. Something that very few people at my job did. The OTR drivers that delivered them sometimes had trouble backing the trailer in. It was obvious who was new and who wasn't. Amazing how they can drive from Ohio, to Indiana, to Kentucky and back,......but they all say the hardest part is backing the trailer in. Yet, some of them double the pay of a yard jockey. Doesn't make any sense.
The yard buggy is a lot easier to maneuver, and that over the road grind isn’t for the faint of heart.
If all you do is back up trailers then hell yeah you better be damn good after a while.
@@bighomiereg6523 I noticed there's no danger of jacknifing in those. They have it easy. Backing a sleeper, I had to be a little cautious.
As someone who has had at least seven of my 15 years in the yard shunting trailers, I see so many old highway drivers… Driving 30+ years who cant back them in like I can. I am a city driver and I can get into most tight squeezes, yet these old guys give me so much disrespect… Largely because I’m a female… Until they see me back into some tight shit that they couldn’t possibly do 🙄 yep, and they are getting well paid well I am not getting well paid 🤷🏻♀️😵💫
Im yard driver at a target warehouse in Midway. When I started we were making $20 an hour, 2 months ago we got bumped up to $25/hr and now there are talks on $30. Contracting through premier transportation. It's great money but I plan on leaving my 30 birthday in March to go work for YRC
Do you have friends or family at YRC? Handful of better LTL companies to work for.

@@yarddriverdave6274 I actually ended up leaving about a week ago to work on the ports pulling cross docked carrier trailers on and off the ports cause its 35 min closer to the house and pays $29/hr. I'd imagine they will eventually get that $30/hr sometime next year. Just with everything going on at the ports work was slowed down by alot. We were getting 50-65 hours a week but everybody but me was cut down to 40 while I was at 46 because I work all 3 of the 12 hour shifts.
@@treycampbell2514 I'm not going to YRC anymore, I had found a company paying more then them and I'd imagine my job is a lot easier too. Just pulling cross docked carrier trailers on and off the ports. Easy on and easy out, 5pm to 3am Which is a beautiful schedule for me personally. Let's me have a life
Nice, I currently jockey for Estes and my schedule is fixing to be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. so I'm pretty stoked for that.

I hope still take comments. Wanted to ask you a question. I failed a road test for a jockey position here. because i struggle blindside backing without getting out and looking. Any tips on this? The yockey truck they had me on was the twin passenger truck. So the passenger mirror doesnt stick out as much as yours, which looks like it might help
You dodged a bullet there. Unless its a very specialized yard, there should be no need for blindside backing. They shouldn't expect you to do so and could lead to unnecessary accidents for you.

I loaded and off loaded trailers and b trains from barges for 20 years. The trucks now make it alot easier.

What is the perfect setup? When you approach your target dock what is your pivoting point? Do you wait until the second set drives pass the spot to turn like you do in a sleeper?
I wait until I pass 2 additional spaces and then I shoot out 90* from there, taking a slight left at the very end to be able to see my whole driver side. Whether I'm coming from the right or left, I always pass 2 or 2.5 spaces.
How bad is the diesel fume exposure I would think it's pretty bad
Yard Jockey is really easy work. July 18th, 2022 will be 2 years of experience in yard jockey work. Before, I got into yard jockey. I was a OTR driver. I am looking for places that ain’t contracted out. Any ideas ?

What make of truck is that? That's an interesting dash layout and door design. We're running twin screw Capacity's
Tico. We've got Ottowa and Autocar, too.
Yard Driver Dave it thought it was a Tico. We have mostly Ottawas at the Kroger whose where I do the Yard Goat thing but we do have 1 Tico. I kinda prefer the Ottawa’s, especially the older ones. They ride better and cut sharper than the newer ones. Great video, especially the frame shots. Nice touch.

Hey bro, how did u get a job as a Yard jockey, do they want experience or u can apply as a entry level??
I went to truck driving school and they sent recruiters there and gave us alerts about job opportunities. In this particular position, we took people off the street and trained them as well as took in those with experience.
@@yarddriverdave6274 what , really unlike here in Canada in my province when u go to truck driving school they dont have a company recruiters going to the school for a career fair, thats why its so hard to find a truck driving job here without experience..
Cool video but I can't figure out why you pull away before you take off your lines. Is that your company policy? Funny thing, I work for Walmart in Canada and the DC I'm at was a Target DC before they sailed ship from Canada.
Efficiency and safety to a degree. If I don't pull away, the light could turn red on me while I'm still there disconnecting lines or while walking back to the truck after putting an air line lock on, which could be a timely process to get it to turn green again. Also, I could touch the dock, get out to disconnect, then get back in and pull away, then get back out again, but that seems unnecessary and inefficient. Are you supposed to check the trailer lights to make sure the trailers are in good working order before they are loaded and to leave them at the dock?
No, if there's any issue when they come into the lot, they go into the Out of Service row. If there's issues after they're loaded, they'll go to the on site mechanics and get straightened out then and there. For other carriers, they'll call in their own mechanics to come in the lot and fix it.

Yo dave how many moves you running a day?? They got me at 120 rite now
Jeez that's a ton. 5-7 moves an hour on average including breaks. Depends how far you've got to travel and and special additions like pup stands or cones will eat away at numbers.
Those are rookie numbers. I'm gonna need to to bring them up.
why are you pulling out half way and disconnecting... instead of disconnecting and just pulling out?
Sometimes the trailer would pull out with me, the fifth wheel wouldn’t disengage right away or if there was snow/ice, it’d come with me. Then I’d have to hook back up and do it over. Disengaging helps prevent that. Also, I wouldn’t be stuck under the trailer if the light were to turn red on me while I’m still under it, saving me time getting on the radio to talk to the warehouse and get that closed. If you notice, there are air locks on the trailers’ emergency glad hands and it’s possible the inside folks can switch the light red as I walk equipment to/from the door & set the wheel chock.
You connect both lines?
Usually for yard jockey you only hook your red (emergency brake) line. But if you’re going
Over the road from one complex to another you will need both your red and blue (supply line) connected. Some companies might require you to connect both no matter what but most only requires red.
Our company requires both, although some guys only do the emergency line. You get more braking power with both connected to stop when those speedracer OTR guys come flying up to blind corners.

How long did it take you to get the hang off backing the trailer up?
It'll take about 3 weeks to really get it down smooth if you're paying attention to your points of attack and turns.

Excuseme how or where can i get yard driver experience , because ive been calling to many diferents companys and they say that i need at least 6 months of exp..😥 but how if no one give the oportunity to start it. Im so frustrated and i really need to work - i live in Los Angeles CA. And next month 3/05/2021 i have my appointment at the DMV to get my CDL class A . ive been studing in a trucking school for the last 6 months ... So i think i have some experience that could help me to do/be "yard driver" but how?? I hope you can help me .
I feel you, however, remember this!
Yard driving and street driving has many differences. Yet, the good part your avoiding traffic in close space if it's a busy facility. I have been over the road, and losing those license can place you back in this method of driving. This can give you an opportunity to learn to back and all sorts of manuvers. Just watch those whom you work with and look out for high trailers.. lessons of failures in the spotter will make you a better driver in tight spaces...
Try applying to PARSEC. I'm going this route to get some experience backing up and learning to drive before I go for a Class A

@@luisbarrios4430 I just moved to Texas! Where at?! I hope the training went well. It was at the 2 month mark where I really started to feel comfortable with the different trucks and learning a new facility.
@@yarddriverdave6274 oh yeah man Im loving it so for working for HEB at the temple distribution center been out of training for a little over a month now and I’ve been feeling pretty good about all the set ups I’ve encountered
How much does HEB start you at for yard dog ?
I've seen a yard truck that the driver seat can rotate 360' also the steering

Would you say a yard jockey is a good job long term?
I'd say it can be. It can be repetitive but I kind of also enjoy when things don't go as planned...adds some variety to the day. You're walking and moving enough to not be sitting down all day so that's a plus too. 401K at my company starts at the one year anniversary. It's approximately $45K per year with benefits in my market so you'd have to decide if that's good for you. Promotion only if yard manager leaves so upward mobility isn't really something to hold out for.

He fucked up at 1:07 always no matter what set your Air Breaks. He jumped out to hook up his lines and never pulled his air. Maybe his company don't tell them to but I'm work for UPS and we always do it no matter what

Just enough to not be touching the trailer anymore, still plenty of slack in the line! Don't want to be touching the trailer when the light COULD flip to green, that's why I detach beforehand.

unfortunately, these essential drivers are now being replaced by electric driverless hostler trucks....How do I know this? I work for the company making them. A I is the enemy of the common man within ten years we are all going to be replaced
Who's going to move the snow out of the way or address alerts though. We can learn to manage these systems and hopefully make it a safer yard. Had a guy get run over during my tenure at this facility. Could probably been prevented with sensors. Father of 3.
