You can't really do anything to fix those games on a 3:2 screen. The games are stretched with a flattering filter to smooth out the image. A real 4:3 screen will always be the better option. This is beyond the scope of your question, but all the people that cloned the OGA never should have kept the 3:2 screen from the original design from HK. This processor is best at emulating systems that originally used a 4:3 aspect ratio. I never thought it would have taken over one year for someone to finally make a proper handheld with this chip.

It's crazy just how many great emulation devices are out these days. It's actually kinda kept me from buying any though, because I always look at them and read about them, but can never make up my mind!

Can’t believe I finally got to see Skies of Arcadia on a handheld. I can’t wait on the handheld (not PC based) that can play Splinter Cell (Xbox or PS2)
It's a question of price vs performance. If you wanted a device that could do that, it could be made, but it would probably end up running Android and being in the $200 price range, where you could just get a GPD XD+ (or even a Switch Lite), which already fits that description. These devices are for the $100 and under range, so their chips are always gonna be at least a few years old and probably mid-low tier for the time they were released in order to keep battery life long enough.
@@erikd6124 Anbernic doesn't develop much in the way of low-level software for chips, they wait for other people to put out a similar product, then build a higher quality equivalent with the same chips. In the case of the JZ4770 chips used in the RG350/350m/350p/280/280v, they were copying the GCW-Zero firmware developed by the open source OpenDingux community. In the case of these Rockchip RK3326 devices (the RG351 line) they're copying the Odroid Go Advanced firmware and OS distributions made by HardKernel and their open source software community. They can't give you a timeline for any products using a new chip because they're a premium-grade copycat brand who make higher quality variants of existing products. That's how they're keeping their costs down while also keeping their build-quality high.

@@erikd6124 Most of the similar devices with more powerful chips run Android, which Anbernic doesn't seem to use on any of their devices. For instance, the Powkiddy X18S looks like it will be much more powerful, but it will run Android. Likewise with the KT R1 will use the same chip as the Powkiddy X18S and will also run Android. Whether or not new Linux-based handhelds come out depends on companies that do the actual software development like Hardkernel, and/or on large dedicated niche communities working for long periods of time, like with OpenDingux.
I've heard from various sources that this is incapable of playing Space Invaders Atari 2600 version at the highest resolution - are you able to confirm this? I do not wish to make a hasty purchase.
Yeah I was wondering that too. In Panda Mimi's video, she mentioned that the analogue stick is in a really awkward place. Too low and way too far to the left. Kind of a shame, but still worth it imo
Aloha! Today I ordered one on BG for just 80 Euros. You can easily sell them in our country for the same price, thats not the problem. But I totally felt in love with this device. In germany we would say: Im going pregnant with it since alot of month. :D Im totally glad with my decision today. cant wait for it. Crystal black reminds me of the GBC generation. It's always a game of cat-and-mouse with those devices. 350M has a 4:3 screen, but an old chip. 351M has the new chip, but the screen is 3:2. This has the new chip and the 4:3 screen, but a plastic shell, one analog and a vertical arrangement (which I actually like, but I think I'm in the minority on that one, and it seems less pocketable than any of the other handhelds). As much as I'm tempted to buy one of those handhelds, I think I'll hold back a bit more and see what they come up with next. I wish there was either a 351VM with a metal casing and maybe a second analog, or a 351M2 with this screen.

I came to the same conclusion. This is my first upgrade since the RG280M and I probably won't upgrade again until they can run PSP and N64 on 2x rendering.
Hi Taki, question: I'm debating between this and the 350M for one main reason: lack of second analogue stick. I mostly play GBA and PS1 and am worried about games like Ace Combat or Medal of Honor being limited by the 1 analogue stick. What would you say?
does this play marvel vs capcom 2 well? and also for someone who isnt that tech savy is it easy to add roms to the handheld without ruining anything already in it i really like how they have the artwork for each console could i possibly ruin that somehow?
I've been waiting to buy a device and this definitely checks off a lot of the boxes. I think I'll wait a bit longer to see what happens with the community firmware -- I seem to remember the other 351 line systems performing a bit better on some of these games.
You can expect ArkOS and 351ELEC within weeks of the devs getting a hold of the device. Since the chipset is identical, there isn't too much work to get it going.

Doesn't make sense for him to buy the 351v and put work into porting it when he's not really interested in a 351v in the first place. I am now the proud owner of a RG351V and I'm having the time of my life despite not being able to play to Parasite Eve 2 & not being able to save in Syphon Filter (I can create my own saves by using the little "f" button & R1 button together anyway, so it's not that big of a problem).

NICE! dual SD card, analogue with L3 function, 4 shoulder buttons, 2 usb-C. Cons: no 2nd analogue stick, only mono speaker, no HDMI out, no C or Z face buttons, (this device has no room for above/below shoulder buttons so I'm ok, REALLY ok with the side-by-side config of the shoulder buttons but only on this specific style device). It's nice, very nice, but... not quite there, I'll wait. Great presentation Taki Udon. =D

Hey, can u help me? I just installed the 351ELEC system on my rg351p device. I noticed that it automatically ajusts the display to the 4:3 scale when I'm playing PS1 games. I would like to turn it into full screen scal but I don't know how to do it

Taki, could you please help. I cant seem to play arcade games on my 351V. I get an error message trying to load the games. Saying Emuelec run log error. They scraped and look fine under the console, but cant play. Any Idea? Thanks
Vertical designs are my fave😍, I think I'm going to check this device out. The screen appears decent compared to other devices of this chipset. It looks comfortable in the hand. Most know what to expect regarding performance, with the settings you can get decent performance. Thanks for sharing👍
I have a rg280v and i can tell you that these anbernic consoles are really great!!and that's it!awesome performances ,great displays ,great emulation ,great speaker ,great controls !!!anbernic is really the best in my opinion !

Dreamcast is probably peaked at this point, unless someone makes an android build, but I don't think that'll ever happen. Look at the N64 performance on an RG351P running ArkOS for an idea of the best N64 emulation you can expect from this device. It's never gonna be full-speed on most games.
@@ungratefulmango yeah, from what I can tell N64 very rarely reaches 30fps. My problem with the android devices is that, from my knowledge, they have button input delays because that's just how it is with android and gamepads. I even noticed it in one of Taki's reviews (don't remember which one), but he never mentioned it in the video so I could be wrong.
@@vinicius100470 I've heard about the input lag issue, but never experienced it myself. I use a Razer Kishi with my Samsung phone, but I would imagine it's a similar set up to devices like the Retroid. I'm not sure though. When it comes to devices like this, you should never assume that the emulation will get better, because there are no guarantees. Like last year, we all thought the Drastic DS emulator would be open sourced and ported to Linux, but it just hasn't happened. The dev says he's still working on it, but it could take a very long time.
I'm waiting for a Perfect Dark capable handheld, and I know I will be waiting a while longer. But these devices are coming on so fast, and hardly getting that much more expensive, SBCs are one of the most interesting fields in technology lately.
I havent really been looking at these little emulation machines but seeing Sonic Adventure 2 on something that looks like a Gameboy Pocket blew my mind

It depends what you want to play on it. If you want to play mostly PlayStation, they'll look better on this screen (4:14). But if you want to play standalone ports and games, the RP2 is better for a couple of reasons. It has the play store, which gives access to loads more games and it has a second analogue stick, which really helps for controlling the camera in First Person Shooters. But most people don't buy these devices to play first person , they buy them for retro console emulation, like PS1 and N64

@@Xmapavega929X2 It's difficult to choose one over the other. To tell you the truth, none of the devices are very good at emulating DS. Partly because they have wide screens and no touch capabilities. But the RP2 does currently emulate DS a little bit better because the Drastic emulator has been running on android for years. And the developer has not open-sourced it, so it isn't optimized for Emuelec. (which is what the RG351V runs on) Really, they both emulate SNES, GBA and GBC flawlessly. So whichever device you get, you should be fine with those. Some people say that the RP2 does emulate N64 better, but I haven't had any experience with that device, so I'm afraid I can't say for sure. The main reason I'm buying the 351V is for PS1, but it sounds like you'll be playing mostly other systems. The Play Store doesn't really have many retro games. Mostly just things like Minecraft or Asphalt. But you can still load rom files for emulators the same way as the RG351 devices, so it's probably not important for you. The biggest deciding factors for you will probably be the form factor and the second analogue stick. N64 emulation can sometimes work better if you map the C-buttons to the right analogue stick, which isn't possible on the RG351V, because it only has one. The only other device I might suggest is the RG351 *P* because it has a 3:2 aspect ratio which is great for GBA games. (but not so great for N64 or SNES) Sorry I couldn't really give any advice. I haven't used all the devices on the market. A good RUclips channel to get some info is Retro Game Corps. He does a lot of in-depth reviews and comparisons. He has a great video comparing the Retroid Pocket 2 with the RG351 And it's no problem. I've been doing lots of research lately because I was also thinking about getting the Retroid Pocket. So I'm happy to help out. Edit: I just thought that you may be interested in the PowKiddy A19 for its form factor and N64 emulation. Just bear in mind it doesn't have any shoulder buttons
Okay, for my money, the perfect device would be this, but folded, GBA SP style. :) And like always, an improved chipset. I guess that will always be a thing.

Got an RP2 last year and quite frankly hate the experience of using it. I'll keep watching these videos, but until I see a device that makes some serious strides I think I'm set on this market for a while. In good news tho my poor experience with the RP2 did result in my buying a 3DS and a Vita, both of which I've modded to hell and back and love.
Do you know why so few of these handhelds have an HDMI port? I bought the Retroid Pocket 2 for this reason but Im not a fan of that device would prefer a 351P or in this case 351V
I cant get the controls right for NDS, any tips? When i try to open RetroArch during the game i can't configure the controls because there is only a basic black/white menu popping up. I also cant configure the NDS Emulator from the Menu. :/

The answer is that this new rg351v is better. Before with the 3:2 screens, it wasnt a clear winner but now with this 4:3 640 480 there is no competion. Ease of use and no android latency. And better buttons. Ofcourse n64 and dreamcast run better on rp2 but still... Android latency is to annoying.

I can confirm it runs fine if you overclock to 4 ghz and also Pacman , Smooth as butter

RG300 is significantly smaller than this. RG300 is great for SNES, Genesis, GBA, and some PSX

I mostly play GBA and PS1 and am worried about games like Ace Combat or Medal of Honor being limited by the 1 analogue stick. What would you say?

I've been waiting to buy a device and this definitely checks off a lot of the boxes. I think I'll wait a bit longer to see what happens with the community firmware -- I seem to remember the other 351 line systems performing a bit better on some of these games.
You can expect ArkOS and 351ELEC within weeks of the devs getting a hold of the device. Since the chipset is identical, there isn't too much work to get it going.
@@ungratefulmango ArkOS is coming to 351v, dev is waiting for his unit. 351Elec dev has stated he has no interest in the device or porting that OS to it.

@@ungratefulmango From what the 351Elec dev said on Reddit it seemed like he's just pretty happy with his 351p/351m and generally not interested in the new 351v as a handheld. Doesn't make sense for him to buy the 351v and put work into porting it when he's not really interested in a 351v in the first place. Idk, maybe he just doesn't like the form factor or lack of second stick or something

I am now the proud owner of a RG351V and I'm having the time of my life despite not being able to play to Parasite Eve 2 & not being able to save in Syphon Filter (I can create my own saves by using the little "f" button & R1 button together anyway, so it's not that big of a problem).

@@burrito_therapy9156 this device will probably barely play DC, PSP, and N64 games. There's nothing handheld right now that plays ps2 unless you spend a lot of money.
I went for the grey as well. Getting pretty tired of transparent devices. And I was *not* about to get that wood effect 🤢
NICE! dual SD card, analogue with L3 function, 4 shoulder buttons, 2 usb-C.
Cons: no 2nd analogue stick, only mono speaker, no HDMI out, no C or Z face buttons, (this device has no room for above/below shoulder buttons so I'm ok, REALLY ok with the side-by-side config of the shoulder buttons but only on this specific style device).
It's nice, very nice, but... not quite there, I'll wait. Great presentation Taki Udon. =D

Hey, can u help me? I just installed the 351ELEC system on my rg351p device. I noticed that it automatically ajusts the display to the 4:3 scale when I'm playing PS1 games. I would like to turn it into full screen scal but I don't know how to do it

It seems that portable uses Retroarch, so there should be a MAME 2003 core there.

Taki, could you please help. I cant seem to play arcade games on my 351V. I get an error message trying to load the games. Saying Emuelec run log error. They scraped and look fine under the console, but cant play. Any Idea? Thanks
Vertical designs are my fave😍, I think I'm going to check this device out. The screen appears decent compared to other devices of this chipset. It looks comfortable in the hand. Most know what to expect regarding performance, with the settings you can get decent performance. Thanks for sharing👍

The bad emulation on N64 and Dreamcast is an issue with the device or with the emulators? Like, can I expect better emulation in the future?
Dreamcast is probably peaked at this point, unless someone makes an android build, but I don't think that'll ever happen.
Look at the N64 performance on an RG351P running ArkOS for an idea of the best N64 emulation you can expect from this device. It's never gonna be full-speed on most games.
@@ungratefulmango yeah, from what I can tell N64 very rarely reaches 30fps. My problem with the android devices is that, from my knowledge, they have button input delays because that's just how it is with android and gamepads. I even noticed it in one of Taki's reviews (don't remember which one), but he never mentioned it in the video so I could be wrong.
@@vinicius100470 I've heard about the input lag issue, but never experienced it myself. I use a Razer Kishi with my Samsung phone, but I would imagine it's a similar set up to devices like the Retroid. I'm not sure though.
When it comes to devices like this, you should never assume that the emulation will get better, because there are no guarantees. Like last year, we all thought the Drastic DS emulator would be open sourced and ported to Linux, but it just hasn't happened. The dev says he's still working on it, but it could take a very long time.
I wish this was just a BIT faster. Ocarina of time and Jet Set Radio at full speed is the dream.
I'm waiting for a Perfect Dark capable handheld, and I know I will be waiting a while longer. But these devices are coming on so fast, and hardly getting that much more expensive, SBCs are one of the most interesting fields in technology lately.

It depends what you want to play on it. If you want to play mostly PlayStation, they'll look better on this screen (4:14).
But if you want to play standalone ports and games, the RP2 is better for a couple of reasons. It has the play store, which gives access to loads more games and it has a second analogue stick, which really helps for controlling the camera in First Person Shooters. But most people don't buy these devices to play first person , they buy them for retro console emulation, like PS1 and N64
@@ungratefulmango mostly I’m looking into DS games, some Nintendo 64, and GameBoy Color & Advanced games. Mostly RPGs like Paper Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, FF, no shooters at all! I basically just want to play retro games from my childhood. So maybe the Retroid you say? The play store you mention is just free downloadable games, right? @@Xmapavega929X2 It's difficult to choose one over the other. To tell you the truth, none of the devices are very good at emulating DS. Partly because they have wide screens and no touch capabilities. But the RP2 does currently emulate DS a little bit better because the Drastic emulator has been running on android for years. And the developer has not open-sourced it, so it isn't optimized for Emuelec. (which is what the RG351V runs on)
Really, they both emulate SNES, GBA and GBC flawlessly. So whichever device you get, you should be fine with those.
Some people say that the RP2 does emulate N64 better, but I haven't had any experience with that device, so I'm afraid I can't say for sure.
The main reason I'm buying the 351V is for PS1, but it sounds like you'll be playing mostly other systems.
The Play Store doesn't really have many retro games. Mostly just things like Minecraft or Asphalt. But you can still load rom files for emulators the same way as the RG351 devices, so it's probably not important for you.
The biggest deciding factors for you will probably be the form factor and the second analogue stick. N64 emulation can sometimes work better if you map the C-buttons to the right analogue stick, which isn't possible on the RG351V, because it only has one.
The only other device I might suggest is the RG351 *P* because it has a 3:2 aspect ratio which is great for GBA games. (but not so great for N64 or SNES)
Sorry I couldn't really give any advice. I haven't used all the devices on the market. A good RUclips channel to get some info is Retro Game Corps. He does a lot of in-depth reviews and comparisons. He has a great video comparing the Retroid Pocket 2 with the RG351
And it's no problem. I've been doing lots of research lately because I was also thinking about getting the Retroid Pocket. So I'm happy to help out.
Edit: I just thought that you may be interested in the PowKiddy A19 for its form factor and N64 emulation. Just bear in mind it doesn't have any shoulder buttons
How do you save your game progress? I tried in one of the Pokémon games to save the standard way you would and it just said save failed and froze
Okay, for my money, the perfect device would be this, but folded, GBA SP style. :) And like always, an improved chipset. I guess that will always be a thing.

Got an RP2 last year and quite frankly hate the experience of using it. I'll keep watching these videos, but until I see a device that makes some serious strides I think I'm set on this market for a while. In good news tho my poor experience with the RP2 did result in my buying a 3DS and a Vita, both of which I've modded to hell and back and love.

I cant get the controls right for NDS, any tips? When i try to open RetroArch during the game i can't configure the controls because there is only a basic black/white menu popping up. I also cant configure the NDS Emulator from the Menu. :/

The answer is that this new rg351v is better. Before with the 3:2 screens, it wasnt a clear winner but now with this 4:3 640 480 there is no competion. Ease of use and no android latency. And better buttons. Ofcourse n64 and dreamcast run better on rp2 but still... Android latency is to annoying.
