The Anbernic RG40XX H sounds a whole lot like the first from a new generation of Anbernic handhelds, when it's really not at all. However, Anbernic's FIRMWARE has continued to get improvements, one that even lets you play PC games on the hardware, which turned into a big ol' controversy...

Anbernic's naming scheme goes like this:
RG - Meaning Retro Gaming
2 digits referring to screen size
1-2 digits referring to the chip they're using.
Letter referring to form factor or material of the shell.
Letter referring to Android/Linux builds
So, RG353PS
35 means 3.5 inch screen
3 is their 3rd chip they've used for their RGs
P refers to plastic shell
S refers to linux only version
The RG40XXH
40 refers to 4.0 screen compared to the 3.5 inch screen in the 35XX
XX they just chose originally because they were not planning on using the 35XX's original chip on anything else, but then they decided to re-use the naming of the XX for this latest line of H700 chips.
It's also why the RG28XX has the same performance as the other XX models
It's actually kinda crazy you can just hear what one of their consoles are called and know if it's shit or not

I think it would've been better if the first number was the processor label followed by the screen size.

You got that wrong. This is not an evolution device. It's the same XX Family. The number just refers to the screen. 35XX - 3.5' 28XX - 2,8' 40XX - 4,0'. So this isn't the "next step" for anbernic. It's just another option from the XX family with a bigger screen.
This is true. At the same time, I understand being confused as it is most certainly a very clunky, confusing way to name devices unless you specifically study what each letter and number means.

The number in the model name is a reference to the screen size. 40 = 4.0 inches. This has been a rule for all their units so far. Not defending them, just stating the facts. Give it 3 weeks and you'll see another form factor anyway lol

The new model is what we wanted from the 35xx H: more screen, 'real' L1-2/R1-2 buttons, better buttons distribution, better ergonomie and better grip and handled with hands. And a little plus: the joysticks are more out of the case, wich is better.
Is it the same? Yes, inside it, but is a huge difference for the players. Can it be better? Yes. But it's ok because you get a better console for the same price.
The pearl clutching about the included games is laughable, considering what the devices are used for. We can all pretend like we added our own from our physical collections and move on ;)
He mentions that. It's easier to turn a blind eye when getting roms of games that aren't even available for purchase anymore. But for the ports, those games are available for purchase.
I personally don't really care how anyone else goes about getting games though.

One thing worth mentioning about the sticks is that (on the 35xxh that i own and pretty sure is the same on the 40xxh) work as a dpad, only in 8 directions
which sucks and is the first thing anbernic should fix when they work on a device with sticks

Even though it is the same internals as the other xx line, I am interested in it for the screen size. I have a RG556, RG35xxH and a RG35XX. I gave the later to my kid as a gift. After having the 556 for some time, I really appreciate a larger screen. I'm no young buck anymore so the the bigger screen is much more comfortable to me. I personally think they should drop all the others in favor of the 40xx. Well, maybe not the SP since that is really hitting home for many but the others should be discontinued. And they need to explore the 556 more and expand upon that device. It's their best one so far and a fine-tuned version of that device is a sure hit. At least for me. Fix the joystick issues, the bluetooth and the wifi and it's golden.

I'm pretty sure the number in the name is to reflect the screen size, at last that's how I understood it. The RGB30 I got off Amazon had Shredder's Revenge and Celeste on it too way back, but they stopped working after a firmware update (it also had the Pico 8 engine which you technically have to pay for, that continued to work, but I already had a legit license for it.)
I just got my RG35XXH, a moment before I came aware of the RGG40XXH, which is a bit disappointing, but I still like it. Gotta get it the CFW, arrange my library, and then give my RG35XX to my lil brother, so he'll pay some retro games on the go.
Basically the only thing I want to do anymore is play Sega Genesis and pokémon ROM hacks. I just sold my switch. Because I didn't play it.
If you wanna play Sega Genesis the RG Arc may be good for you
Just get a retroid pocket 4 Pro. It can actually play Saturn games, unlike the Arc

@@matthewdeepblue well you should. Lots of Japanese only games getting translated. Saturn ports of arcade fighters are so much better than their PS 1 versions. You can also run a growing list of Genesis games with 16:9 support though emulators the Arc isn't powerful enough to run
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 I agree with the sentiment, however I fail to see the point of emulating the Saturn ports of arcade games when you can just emulate arcade games themselves, and those emulate better.
If I didn't have a 35XXH, I'd be pretty interested in the 40XXH. It's the same thing, but a bit nicer. However, the controls are still too stiff for my taste, so instead of a new handheld, I just got a clip to hold my 35XXH onto my favorite comfy controller.

A million people are gonna comment this but yeah it's called the RG40XX cause the numbers stand for the diagonal screen size. The different RG35XX devices all have a 3.5" screen, the RG28XX has a 2.8" screen, and yeah this one has a 4.0" screen.

I absolutely love mine. All my fav psp games and n64, dreamcast games are working so perfect. It lets you map to diff controls for each individual game, so I can use dual joysticks for all the n64 and psp games. It's also easy to have different operating systems thanks to the dual sd card slots. I cannot figure out this damn port games and only got king's quest 5 working on dosbox.
The number, you know, the one in the name of the product. It refers to the size of the screen. The RG28xx has a 2.8in screen, RG35xx is 3.5in, and yep the RG40xx is 4.0in.
40 denotes the 4 inch screen. It has been that way since the first Anbernic devices. XX denotes the generation. The only confusing thing is how you didn't understand that.

I didn't really need one of these but I bought it anyway as the screen on the RG35XX-H was a little too small to play some PC ports. I got the Sonic Blue model and didn't know what to do with it for a few months. I went with KNULLI firmware and the GUI was so nice that I decided to make it a dedicated Sega emulation device. Couldn't be happier.
We just need a spreadsheet from you at this point. You've reviewed so many of these things. It just needs to have an overall rating, price, what it can emulate, and any notes (like bad sticks, poor emulation for one of its consoles, etc).

This is part of the XX series, just with a 4.0" screen instead of a 3.5" screen.
I updated my SP 2 weeks ago. It did not include TMNT, Celeste, or Shovel Knight... it did include Stardew Valley and GTA3.
Can't wait for these to perfectly play GameCube games
The SP is the only one I've bought or ever plan to buy.
Well all recent Anbernic devices are basically the same but the SP is probably the only one with an interesting form factor and buttons. I just feel like there's something off with the other ones. Like putting thumbsticks on these kind of devices seems useless since it won't run games really well after SNES.
Warning for the hdmi out. Dont change change the hdmi option because you will lose sound on the device. So the hdmi is useless, unless you want to lose all sound.
So HDMI audio doesn't work at all? Does it work with Bluetooth headphones while HDMI to TV?

I already own the ports they included, in some cases more than one copy. I don't feel bad at all about having them included.
what you don't get is its dirt cheap for them to make a new shell design. SO they decided to make different form factors for different ppls preferences. So anbernics plan is to try and reach as much ppl as possible. I dont mind that they all have the same hardware. Just pick the one with the form factor you like. More choices for the consumer
Dude as a noob to retro handheld gaming (haven’t even received my first one yet), it’s so obvious that RG35 has a 3.5” screen and the RG40 has a 4.0” screen. If you can’t figure that out, maybe it’s time to hang up the channel.

A lot of complaining about it being similar compared to previous versions when it's a huge difference for tons of people. Screen is slightly different, it's design being horizontal for different hands, and a lot of people prefer analog sticks as an option. I specifically was looking for a device exactly like this as I hate using the Dpad on N64 games.
Bought it today (Black Friday) for $57.00. It's my first retro gaming handheld and I plan to use it hdmi out with a Bluetooth controller. Hopefully that functionality works okay!

@@infernaltim Works flawlessly! I installed Knulli and had a great session at work the other day while plugged in power/hdmi and bluetooth controller. I am having an issue with thermal throttling right now though. When I'm under 60% and am charging, or recently have charged, I get some slowdowns.

Did you mention the RG35XX 2024 edition? Which is just the Plus, but in the shell of the OG 35XX with a smaller battery (and no Wi-Fi, I believe) for about the same price? :P I have half of these and I like a lot about them, but man... there are TOO MANY Anbernics! 💚
Also, Tech Dweeb has a whole set of names for these that aren't cursed. 🤣The RG35XX H is the "Zazzbizzle," The SP is the "Flipzizzle," and the 28XX is the "Zazzbitty," for example!
The larger screen and stacked trigger buttons, if they're comfortable, might be enough for me to buy it to replace my 35xxh

I think they did the 35 because the old screens were 3 1/2 inches and the 40 is because now it’s a 4 inch screen. I may be wrong though.
Including pirated versions of recent games with Linux ports is wildly terrible. These games are still being sold and distributed and for most developers porting to Linux is going the extra mile, Anbernic is not only legally playing with fire but are ethically bankrupt for exploiting developers for being considerate.

The first two number are screen size, the last two are SOC power, the letter is form factor, aka 351V: 3.5” 3326 vertical, 353V: 3.5” 3566 vertical, 405v: 4” T618 vertical, 556h: 5.5” T820, horizontal (ok I added the h, lol)

Is the 405m still relevant? Love the form factor and the fact that it can play n64 decently. Haven't heard much about it since they've been releasing new devices.

I’m good I got the rg350m whit Adam image it it is metal it plays PlayStation 1 games perfectly and is nice in the pocket I might buy another one someday if it can run PlayStation 2 games but for that i just use odin pro thanks for another great video keep them coming🤘😎
The RG40XX H is way better than the RG35XX H because of the L2 and R2 buttons, so you can play games such as Ace Combat 3 much better with this correct button layout

Anbernic has a long, long history of using the first two digits as the screen size (40 is 4 in screen, 35 is 3.5 in screen), whereas the last part defines the generation, so all XX devices would be of the same gen to them. (351 was a faster gen than 350, for example.) It only became a tiny bit weird, because they put a better chip into the 35xx plus. But "XX" in general is just their low-end tier of devices.

I think you are just misunderstanding how they name their systems. Also how did you not know this was the same innards as the 35xxsp? Don’t you do research before you make your videos?
Ordered a new 2024 model RG35XX, they sent me one with a label that didnt have the "+" and has a 2100mah battery instead of the 2600mah battery advertised.
Maybe if I wait a few more weeks, they'll give me an Android device in the same form factor, since Anbernic never released a RG405P.
That's what I'm kind of hoping for. Maybe we'll end up getting a 406h, since they just came out with the 406v.

Everyone is um-askhully-ing you about the naming conventions of anbernic, but I think your point stands; putting the screen size first is confusing, especially when the XX series as a whole broke with anbernic naming conventions and maintained XX across a new chip. Where I will push back a bit is on the antagonism-- not just here, but in a lot of reviews-- about the number of models anbernic is releasing. I think there's a *lot* of value in releasing a large number of different form factors for the same chipset. This means that, if you're someone who gets all of them or has to review all of them, the releases feel boring and pointless, with no significant upgrades over a set span of time-- but it also means that custom firmware can mature for a large number of devices, and it means that people can focus on selecting what specific form factor they like best without worrying about what the console can play. It would be a bit more consumer-friendly if they announced all the form factors they were planning for the XX and 6 lines, so that everyone would know ahead of time if they should hold off on something that would please them more, but overall it leads to consumer choice without flooding the market with a variety of chipsets each with their own quirks and nuances in compatibility. It's less like apple releasing a new iphone every month, and more like the different sizes of the new iphone releasing at different times.

You've been reviewing these for years. Surely you know that the first two numbers in the device's name refer only to its screen size? The reason this has '40' in the name, is because it has a 4.0" screen. That's it. The XX means it has the same chipset (and therefore performance) as all the other XX devices, like the RG35XXSP (3.5" screen) or even RG28XX (2.8" screen). They might all have different screen sizes and form factor, but they're the same on the inside.

I dont know how you can sit there and claim some superiority and say that we shouldnt get the games on the sd card when you rip them off the internet anyway, its kinda hypocritical.
I personally like that they come with the games on there because it saves me hours of finding sites that have them, since alot of these sites are getting shut down.
He's talking from the perspective of these handhelds being available and surviving as a market, bringing a legal issue into the mix, jeopardizes their existence, he also mentioned ripping his own ROMS, as a pose to dl'ing them, something that makes more sense to someone that just want's the games they like, play & enjoy, rather than an endless wall of text giving you choice paralysis.

I got the 35XX, and I like it, but I’m so tired of these companies releasing a new handheld every few weeks that have only incremental upgrades. I’ll put my money down again when it becomes worth it
I'm really curious how we're going to look back on these systems in 15 years. It's not like Nintendo where each generation has maybe 2 or 3 models at MOST. With Anbernic they release like 20 consoles a YEAR. It's going to be so weird digging one of these up somewhere and having no idea what it is even
