I beg to differ on the point of immigration policy. The UK has always had an independent policy for immigration for people outside the EU and EEA. EU laws, as they stand right now, do not decide the immigration policy of individual countries concerning people from outside the EU and EEA. And even within EU laws, there is a provision to deport other EU/EEA nationals to their home countries if they don't find gainful employment within 3 months of their arrival in the UK. Not to mention the fact that the UK's opt-out from the Schengen treaty already gives it the most control on immigration from the rest of the EU. The UK is at fault for not exercising the right it has within EU laws and people are now complaining about the so-called "uncontrolled immigration" from the rest of the EU/EEA into the UK. The primary gripe, which is a massive misunderstanding on the part of a significant portion of the general public, is that immigrants from the EU/EEA come to the UK to mooch off the benefits system in the UK (as the UK is a welfare state) which exists as one of the many reciprocal arrangements the UK has with the rest of the EU/EEA under the provisions of the EU law.
