    This seem like it missed all the meat of syndication and described all the potatoes.
    I would have pointed out the logistics and reasons why syndication exists. In radio each station was a different company LA might have a good radio show and Denver wants to air it too, hence station to station syndication. You didn't even explain that TV syndication has 2 ways. Everyone has the networks already, but kind of like radio everyone has local stations. One local station per region will own the rights to a national network. That is NBC doesn't broadcast nationally on its own, it has 1,000 stations independently broadcasting NBC programs.
    What happens is network programs don't have 24/7 content so local networks are free to broadcast other shows in non-network time slots. Sometimes producers of a TV show don't get an offer they like or no offer at all for a show. So they instead make syndication deals in local markets.
    Sometimes syndicated shows become so popular a network decides to buy the show. Other times the show lives on entirely in first run syndication. Star Trek The Next Generation is a famous example. One of the most successful shows in history, and it never had a network exclusive, all syndication.
    The second kinds of syndication in TV is the one briefly explained in the video this is where re-runs are sold to syndication. Second run shows can be syndicated the same way Next Generation was, that is sold to local stations so it may appear on different networks around the country. Or they can be sold entirely to one channel.
    Also not mentioned was classically, though not 100% necessarily, 100 episodes was considered the benchmark for second run syndication. If a first run series got to 100 episodes, they would often then try to sell the reruns in syndication, even while the show was still on air. The Simpsons has seen multiple re-run syndication deals for decades while still airing new episodes.
    Syndication is seen as so valuable, that even recently productions have gotten into legal battles with their primary network over that networks rights to show reruns. Too many reruns on the primary network might lower the resale value of the series.

      I agree, the video was titled "What Does it Mean", but instead he talked about the history of syndication. There was only about a ten-second explanation of what it actually was, and that still left me a little confused.

      Thanks!! It’s actually hard to find a straightforward explanation of all types of syndication online so you summed it up but what I don’t understand is how a reality TV show or a competition reality TV show can go into syndication well let’s say in its second season. I ask because the masked singer was recently sold/started whatever it’s called into syndication. But it’s an illumination competition show that’s also not over it’s still Running. So by your explanation I think it means that these types of shows are syndicated like radio shows? Like not all fox stations in all markets even show that particular TV series? I guess I just can’t imagine a big show not being seen in certain areas of America based on where you live and what your local Fox station airs? How does that work? Anyways if you have time to explain something that’s probably very simple to me that would be awesome if not thanks for info.

      I do have a question. If a network buys the show they are in charge of whether it gets renewed or cancelled right? So who makes that decision for syndicated shows that are airing on multiple networks?

  • @DorvellTStewart

    My biggest complaint regarding first run syndication on television here in the US…
    When the only stations that carry the bulk of syndicated programs these days are Fox, My Network TV and CW stations, thanks to ABC, NBC and CBS stations filling more and more of their available slots with extra, unnecessary newscasts, it’s kind of hard for these shows to build. If more stations got back into the business of syndicated programming, maybe these shows would have a better chance; right now it’s just too many shows, and not enough stations to carry them.

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 6 лет назад

      MND17 Yeah I usually love these but this episode seemed to gloss right over the actual topic.
      I just posted a detailed explanation of radio and TV syndications. But long story shorter:
      It's when one owner of a show sells the rights to air the show to someone else.
      In radio every broadcast station was a separate company. Though as time has passed they've all been bought up by Clear Channel. Because each station is a different company, if a popular radio show in New York wants to be aired in Phoenix, they have to sell the show to a Phoenix station. That's radio syndication. The more popular a show, the more stations they are syndicated on.
      TV has 2 kinds of syndication. 1. A network owns a show and sells reruns to other networks (that's where the 100 episodes come in, 100 was enough to sell a package deal to air all 100, if a show had only 15 episodes, people wouldn't buy it, because it would never get regular viewership.). 2. A show wants to be aired, but no network has bought it, so they go from station to station trying to sell the new show directly into syndication. This can be a pain in the ass, but it can also get a show sold that no network wanted the rights to. Star Trek The Next Generation was like this. In one city you might have seen it on Fox, in another it might be on CBS. Because like radio, TV stations can run their own locally purchased content.

    • @GreatMewtwo
      @GreatMewtwo 6 лет назад

      Syndication is when the rights to the show are sold to the individual stations rather than the entire network. Usually, shows get syndicated after 100 episodes, but it is not uncommon for some shows to be syndicated as a first-run series or with at least 65 episodes (5 days a week for 13 weeks).

    Hey I remember you guys talk about this in the podcast, it's good to get an in depth explanation. I'm hoping that you can also elaborate on the role of blacks fighting for the confederacy as most sources on this seem extremely devious. I always assumed they didn't really have a say on it as they were mostly slaves but for obvious reasons i've been recently hearing people of hand mentioning the opposite

    Thank you, this greatly helped me internalize what exactly "syndication" means. Good stuff!

      You should be more specific since nobody knows what you are talking about.

    Great video. But please, for the love of God, go back to the old thumbnail style. The new ones are like the ones generic clickbait trashtubers use.

    You sell it to another network. They pay royalties for every play. You make money. How does someone need a research team to investigate this for you. I love tifo but can we keep the vids for people with IQs above 80?
