Today I had the opportunity to briefly hold the new 14-24/2.8 next to its Sigma sibling. The Leica variant is certainly better build and feels more premium, but I couldn’t verify differences in IQ. However, what I was able to verify, is that the rear filter holder is the same as Sigmas. That means that drop-in filter sets from Haida, Kase and Aurora for the Sigma, will most likely also fit the Leica variant. These drop-in filters are made of optical glass and are multi-coated (at least the Haida ones) so definitely better that homecut resin options. Another option is to use the front filter kit by Nisi that is designed for the Sigma. It will also fit the Leica lens. This is huge however with the 150mm filters. But at least we have options.
The nice thing about living in the north (relating to discussion around 1:09:00 mark) is that the same phenomenon happens during the summer as well. It never gets dark. In Finland where I live the sun sets during the summer after 11pm and stays just below the horizon with a nice yellow, orange or red sky. During the winter the sun barely rises above the horizon, meaning it looks like an endless sunset/sunrise during daytime then as well, and I can go photographing the city lights after 4pm when it's completely dark again. The problem is that some months are really cloudy, meaning there has been a November some years back when there was just 1h of blue sky during the entire month. The distance from here to the Arctic Circle is around 400 km.

Always embarrassing when the test shows a Sigma-derived zoom beating out the much-vaunted APO-Summicron in edge sharpness.
Can read in the forums that enot all M lenses perform well on the SL and that seems to be especially the case on wide angle. So that would be part of the equation.
When I finally find the apo-summicron-sl 21mm in stock I intend to complete my SL APO collection and form Leicatron, which I understand will rise up and shout it's Peter Karbe battle cry: "it's ok to shoot wide open!!"

Great video guys! That ND thing for the 14-28 zoom is not up to Leica standards. As Josh mentioned, the ND gels, are intended for lighting and are not anywhere close to the optical quality needed for camera use. Work around is good way to put it, but they need to make real filters for this lens. Especially for the rear of the lens where it's most important. Something for them to work on I guess. The Sigma version has the same thing (I have that lens).

Can anyone explain me what the lens has to do with multishot? With each of the 8 frames shot still 47MP (or 24MP on the SL2-S) are ‘passing’ the lens. The 187MP (or 96MP) are only composed in-camera, so ‘behind’ the lens. The lens itself doesn’t resolve the 187MP. The fact that the sensor is shifted half a pixel in every direction creates 8 different images with any lens. Those diferences are used to compute the 187MP. The only logic I can come up with is that the lens lack of sharpness in the 47MP images are kind of enlarged in 187MP, However, my software engeneering skills ‘tell’ me that those flaws can actually be corrected when you compose the 187MP. So, what does the lens show in 187MP that it doesn’t already in 47MP?

Currently in the world of super wide angles I use a Leica SL2-S with Elmarit-R 19/2.8 version 2 and I'm quite happy. I had already thought about expanding my universe and purchasing the Super Vario Elmar 16/35, an idea that was strongly strengthened after your enlightening video. Do you think that in terms of sharpness, aberration correction, contrast and color rendering the SVE 16/35 could be (apart from the interesting range of focal lengths available) a significant step forward? I photograph (for passion, not for work) urban architecture and archaeological architecture. Good light and thank you for the time you want to dedicate to me. ❤
Absolutely! David here. I used the 19mm Elmarit-R extensively on the R9 both with film (FF) and the DMR (1.3x crop). The 16-35 SL has been my wide angle workhorse now on three generations of SL cameras (SL601, SL2, SL3). In my experience, the 16-35mm SL is vastly superior to the 19mm R. Sharpness, field flatness, distortion, lack of vigenetting, etc. are all better on the 16-35. And of course, the difference in field of view (FOV) at 16mm versus 19mm is significant. Add in the flexibility of covering the entire wide angle range in a single lens, the ability to use standard E82 filters, autofocus, electronic aperture control and full weather sealing, and the upgrade is a no-brainer.

Look, if you buy a Nikon lens and get a Tamron design, that is one thing. But if you shell out and buy Leica and what you get for it isn't even Leica .... that's bad.
If the Q3 is anything to go by the SL3 is most likely gonna be a box feature clown car as well. .... I don't like the direction Leica is going. Not at all.
