  • Join us in Cape Girardeau as we tour a Victorian Era Queen Anne house located above the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River. This house was Woman Owned in the 1800's and was one of Southeast Missouri's first houses to feature electricity and telephones. Stick around for an interview with Christy Mershon, President of the board at the Glenn House.

Fun Fact: Before mechanical refrigeration became a "thing", what we now call an "Icebox" was called a...refrigerator! (You can see this in vintage catalogs). Oddly, My mother (Born well into the electric refrigerator age) called the refrigerator the "icebox", I sometime slip and do it myself! (Maybe it's a Pittsburgh thing? IDK)

I know that houses in that era were dark, but I had to actually turn up my screen brightness to see this one! 😄 I always imagined that summer kitchens were bigger than that. I was surprised that it was no bigger than a backyard shed! The house and furnishings are gorgeous! 😍 Thank you for the great tour. 👍😘💙

What a beautiful house, decorating is quite elegant. The lighting is very beautiful. I see many of the shutters are drawn to make a more romantic and a mysterious mood. Today people like the house bright and filled with light, however I prefer the charm of the soft light. Thank you, you did a great job.

I've always loved the old Victorian homes and envied those girls who had replica doll houses. Sadly, many have been destroyed or simply demolished so I loved this video "tour". Which room was my favorite? I would have to say all of them. Amazing that that much period furniture was found to fully decorate the house. 👍🤗

I used to give tours at a Victorian Mansion in Philadelphia and this house reminds me of it a lot. Photos of the house from the period still exist so it wasn't extremely difficult to recreate the carpet and wallpaper. It also has stenciling. Just as in your video, families have donated period furniture including donations from descendants of the second owners. The original owners grew wealthier very quickly and had a larger home built. If you are ever in Philadelphia you would probably enjoy a visit to the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion

You did a great job of laying in the voice overs and it added to the tour. It might be time for a wireless mic, maybe, so that the sound is really clear. You do a great job with dialogue. *@ **10:51** pause and catch an example of the Victorian Jewel Color, here and Emerald Green, a color that has returned to the current Color Pallet for the "Very New 21st Century Modern Victorian Style in Decor".*
    ▪ One that will require a most informed Professional Decorator. It is a subject I strongly suggest "Professional" to be used or a Class required for the really gifted DIY'ers, or risk a most noticeable confusing outcome.
The original Victorian having such heavy layer of Decor is not the Style of the 21st Century version and it can be an elusive to achieve in its intended style.
(Not my favorite of Trends for the obvious, one can imagine, (like finger painting with Oils on Canvas), Oh, lets just dont!
    Beautiful Green, delicious.

I am way more interested in these middle/upper middle class homes than the real biggies.

Interesting they were considered middle class. I do not have servants nor did my father give me a mansion for my wedding present! 🤣🤣love the tour. Thank you so much.

Hey, you're down my way! It might be interesting to try and wrangle a visit either to the Jackson Oliver house or the Cape Girardeau one (the primary location that Marie Watkins Oliver and the team of women who created the MO state flag worked on it).

Doesn't look lived in more like a museum WOW lots of stenciling no thermo pane windows (I guess); Middle Class, if you have a maid that's upper class. Garage? Basement?

It is a House Museum. At the end of the video, I sat down with the Curator to talk about what it is like running it as a House Museum. There is a detached carriage house, though it is newer. There is also a crawl space below the house, no basement.
