Now I wonder how does Makeup primer work. Would you like to make explanation video about this?
I agree!
anggi novia chair you beat me too it, I just wrote that I wanted to know the difference btw an hydrating primer and a moisturizer. The way pore fillers work?
How to make sure the primers are compatible with your foundation.
Me too!
also face mists? susan yara of mixed makeup says humectant and moisturiser are different but I dont quite get it 🤔
rewatching this to remind myself which one I wanted to buy... but was wondering, in case you do see this thread. if I DIY a face mist with a runny humectant toner... does that risk drawing moisture FROM the skin if I do it mid-day and cant follow up with moisturiser?
Great video, thanks. Could you please do a detailed video on alcohol in cosmetics? Differences in cheap vs. expensive makeup (eyeshadow, powder) ingredients?
Denatured alcohol scares the heck out of me! Some people say it is no big deal but my skin hates it.
I would love that! The new Pat McGrath foundation has alcohol in it and I’d love to learn why... especially since it costs $68!
My favourite nerd ❤️
AMAZING!!! I asked for this video, so glad you made it! I LOVE to learn about ingredients so that I can compare products and choose the best one for my budget and effect I want.
I have been looking for someone with this kind of information for awhile now, thank you!
This is exactly what I've been wondering since I'm trying to find a good setting spray that will just hydrate and is affordable. Thank you!
We learn something new every day, thank you! That was very informative, and I always wondered abt the hairspray thing
Definitely do more makeup-related videos!!! Foundation vs concealer, mascara ingredients, lipsticks (liquid lipsticks, normal, what colourings and additives are used)
Love the channel!
This was such a perfect explanation of what they are and I love that u included the actual sprays and what they are used for and how they are different. Thank you 😊
Loved the video💗
Could you perhaps make a video on Ceramides in skincare?
And do they need to be used in a particular ratio with cholesterol and FFA to be effective?
I never realized there were two types so thanks for the excellent info! Love your channel :)
Not sure if this is something that would interest you but I would love to see the science behind "cleansing conditioners" and if they actually work and cleansing the scalp/hair.
Love these. Can you do one on how primers work?
This was great!! I just threw out a "fixing spray" that had none of these ingredients. And when I looked up the ones they had, they were alcohol, surfactants and emulsifiers....and fragrance. Such am eye opening video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this info! It’s super helpful 😄
I swear this is like my rant topic since the encore makeup video over ten years ago and you made the best explaination video I’ve ever seen on it. Every one of my secret tips. I’ve been using simple micelles water instead of Mac fix plus for years. It’s almost identical ingredients.
AMAZING content! Love that it is science based too. Thank you for sharing
Exactly what I needed to know! Thank You! 😁😍😍
I really needed to know this and have been pondering the difference. Thank you for educating me.
Lol wow!! Who knew that hairspray can also be used as a fixing spray lol all of those missed spays of hair spray that were meant for my hair but actually went on my face was actually beneficial for my make up and I’ve been doing it for years and it didn’t even know it lol!!! Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing your knowledge and teaching me something new🌺
Hey Michelle, love this thank you :) Please could you do a vid on Ceramides in skincare and peptides for their efficacy ? xox
Very informative video ! Didn't know there was a difference between setting and fixing sprays
I would love it if you would address the issue of applying direct acids like Vitamin C or Glycolic acid over peptide products. I have read that the acids can make the peptides ineffective. Thanks!
Wow, this was great and so demystifying about facial sprays! Thank you!
de- _mist_ ifying? eh? wocka wocka! I'll just play myself out....
Holy crap, this is what I am talking about.
Most channel doesn't really explain what's going on aka in depth explanations because obviously they are not a scientist... 💕💕
And you're so charming as well.
Amazing video!!! LOVE IT, love your voice.
Can you please talk about primers? Example the difference btw an hydrating primer and a normal moisturizer? The way pore fillers work? The difference btw them?
Or how to make sure that your primers are compatible with your foundations?
Great video! I have a question for you (I have no chemistry background so it might be a stupid one): do you think it would be possible to engineer an eye gloss - or an eye gloss setting product - using polymers? Since eye gloss necessarily needs to stay wet/oily to remain glossy, I wonder if there's a substance that can hold it in place without being so strong as to limit lid movement.
Thank you Michelle! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved the video! I would be super interested in hearing your take on Evy brand sunscreens, which claim to absorb into epidermis so that it doesn’t wash off (?) and lasts several times longer than other sunscreens.
Hi
Thanks for sharing your time and expertise.
I really enjoy your research information.
Your skin looks Amazing and your eye concealer did a terrific job, in this video using the makeup and lighting is
Great.
Thanks
Thanks for the valuable information.
I had no idea how much I didn’t know about setting sprays! Thanks again. Could you do a video about common allergens to look for for sensitive eyes
Love your very educational channel! 😍
Thank you so much for your work!
I'm making and selling cosmetics made out of plants that I grow and it's such a pleasure to learn about cosmetics from your scientific point of view and knowledge! I love it and it's so important.
Thanks so much for explaining!
Thank you I adore your videos! Question 🙋♀️, does setting spray make your sunscreen less effective?
I love this channel already
Super helpful! Thank you!
I know this is a old video but I have to say thanku for simply explaining the differences, would love a video of u recommending skin friendly fixing sprays and setting spray ie: without denatured alcohol or fragrance or any irritants.
What is the difference between PVA and Acrylates/octylacrylamide copolymer i.e. which is better as a setting spray ingredient that shields the makeup
I'd like to see a video on supplements and/or vitamins that help the skin, especially aging skin. I'm 59 and my skin has been dry at the very best of times. I drink about a gallon of water a day, so it's not that. I'm looking for other options. Love your videos!
Thank you for explaining these ingredients. I know you don’t really do hair products, but would you consider explaining dry shampoos? I recently started looking at their ingredients and I’m freaking out a little that they all contain propane and butane in the top two spots......maybe I’m wrong but it just doesn’t seem like something I’d want on my head
I did not take you very seriously when I first clicked on your channel but found this report comprehensive, pointed and above all accurate.
That was very informative, thanks :)
this is great! thank you!
You said click the bell for notification, I heard click the bell for nerdification.
Thank you for this, I was wondering what the differences were.
There's no difference between notification and nerdification on this channel 😂
Hi Michele! 🙋🏻♀️I wanted to ask you what do you think of using a mattifying setting spray on top skincare to reduce oilyness throughout the day?!
I stoped using power 6 months ago and did skin tests before and now... I am never dehydrated any more! So I never want to use setting powders again.
I was wondering though If the mattifying setting spray would do exactly the same as the powder and draw moisture out of my skin?
I would appreciate your opinion.
Thank you 😃
Hi! I've been trying to find a conclusive answer to this: does setting spray decrease the effectiveness of sunscreen? I really want to incorporate a setting spray into my makeup routine but I am worried about what could happen to the sunscreen underneath.
Unfortunately I don't think there's going to be a conclusive answer - it'll depend on the spray, the sunscreen, the amount of spray used etc. I would guess that the disturbance would be minimal though, compared to applying makeup!
Supergoop makes a setting spray with spf in it.
your daddy I doubt it would do anything if it’s the “fixing” spray type
your daddy you could try using an spf spray instead of a setting spray if you are concerned about your sunscreen getting interrupted
Me too!
I was just asking myself this yesterday omg!😭❤️
Can a fixing and setting spray be used together? Such as Mac Prep and Prime and then adding a layer of Urban Decay All Nighter? Is there any benefit to this?
Thank you!!
PLEASE do a video on sunscreen under makeup for dehydrated oily skin!
Hi Michelle, I do have a question. When the setting spray is applied does the sunscreen (applied prior any makeup) coverage gets affected?
Thanks again.
I love your channel!
I really like this content. I am very curious how setting spray work. what about the mineral water spray, does it work? I feel dry sometimes after spray it on face.
I love this video!
Can I use setting spray (Fix + from MAC) under fixing spray (Skindinavia Bridal fixing spray)?
Thank you so much.
Your channel is very helpful.
I meant one right on top of the other, to avoid dehydration.
You are just amazing!
Great video! I was really doubting the usefulness of setting spray not understanding how they work. But you definitely fixed that!! 🤗
Are your eyes ok?
I tend to use a combo of too faced and urban decay. Too Faced hangover has it fifth in the list of ingredients but it just doesn't keep makeup on like the UD all nighter does. I love the look the too faced one gives though.
Fascinating!
Hi Michelle.
I hope you don’t mind me asking an unrelated question to your video.
I’ve been using LRP Ultra Light for a long time. The alcohol is just too high now that it’s winter.
I know you recommend the Ultraceuticals sunscreen, does it have the same high UVA protection that LRP has? I’m concerned with pigmentation and anti ageing.
Also on my list is:
*Evy
* Ultraviolette
* Helicocare
In your opinion which offers the best protection?
I hope you can do a sunscreen favourites video in the near future 🙏🏼
Great vid 💖
thanks for this video. Valuable resource after buying things based on their marketing because, well needed a product quick! Essentially, I now have an idea what I'm looking at in the ingredients list. Can I ask why you think then products with the PVD's etc are more expensive? Is it just because they work or is PVD etc, the ingredient themselves; cost more to manufacture?
Ben Nye for instance is extremely expensive!! I'm asking as a living statue who is currently using all Kryolan products and have found some really good moisturising 1st application products to now accompany the grease paint I use for the colour and texture effects.
Hi!! Kinda new to your channel, hope you can asnwer my question, there are a lot of video about diy setting sprays, are they helpful or harmful?
Loved the video... but came looking for one on moisturising/humectant sprays, could have sworn I've seen one before... but can't find it. Can anyone help with the link? 🙏🏽
Nice video 😁 that helped me out emensley 😉
I have oily combo ski which do I get? my skin tends to be moist on its own even with primers.
I’d like to know the role of alcohol denaturant in foundations and their effects on mature skin (I’m combination). Will they dry out the skin and make fighting wrinkles more difficult? Are they bad for acne prone skin? Thanks! I’m new here (round you from a video
With Nadine Baggett) so if you already have a video addressing the topic I’ll look for it.
can i recommend for the oily people the urban decay de slick spray? still a fixing spray but with added oil control. my face is hella greasy and that stuff has survived both cramped public transport in a heatwave and torrential rainfall with no umbrella or hat pretty much unscathed (not even a joke, when i got in from the rain my makeup was still so good i looked like i was in some kind of arty wet look photoshoot) and regularly gets my makeup through 8 hours without touch ups when im at concerts and stuff
I was hoping you'd tell me what to look for in a setting spray for oily skin... what to avoid
Please can you do a video on the best professional facial and what to look for. I have bought my mum a gift card for a local beauty salon but they offer lots of different facials and she is struggling to choose which is worth it and will give an effect not achievable at home. The salon does offer dermalogica product services. What should we be looking for to ensure a good treatment? Main aims:improving texture, pore size and anti aging
Loving your videos
i've been using rose water as a setting spray since running out, my makeup still stays on so i guess i dont need setting spray anymore?
Hi, do you know any spray for very sensetive skin?
Interested in your opinion on setting sprays with sun protection.
Great vid 👍
Hey Michelle, I just came across your YT! Brilliant vidoes so far. I work in the industry of skincare and there is not enough exposure to the things you talk about in australia. (I'm in brisane, QLD) In particular sunscreens and having a good cleansing routine. I constantly come across people wanting better skin but refuse a sunscreen because in their opinion 'they don't work'. Australia of all places!
also, i studied a little bit of chemistry at uni in Brisbane, i think if i studied with you we'd get along......although i found chem interesting but hard.......definitely when it came to medical chemistry and actual labwork....oh my god, don't know how i passed!
One of the few makeup people on RUclips that actually seem to be smart and don't appear crazy.
I tried watching videos about setting sprays by other people but they were 10 minutes long and consisted mostly of "Ugh..." "Omg" etc. Yours actually has fucking information in it.
Hi. Does alcohol-free setting spray (with polymer) mess up chemical sunscreens (Korean)?
Can u pelase give me a dupe for the huda beauty resting setting spray please?🙏
Are there any good setting sprays with SPF?
Thanks for all the cool videos. Do you you have any ideas or products that will help fix makeup so that it does not manually wear off from my eyeglasses and sunglasses? I have a hard time with the makeup between my eyes and nose. My glasses fit properly, don't slide a lot, but still have trouble with keeping makeup on in the area. Should I not use powder, use powder, use extra setting spray? any tips would be helpful. Thanks so much.
Jamie Joy - Check out Lisa Eldridge on RUclips as she has a great video on how to use makeup when wearing glasses. Helpful.
Even if it has the same ingredients in terms of polymers, the thought of spraying my face with hair spray feels wrong. Reminds me of old school theatre days.
This is late, but I wonder HOW sprays with humectants can help boost moisture on the fly. My understanding is that humectants require occlusives to seal in moisture, as just using humectants would encourage your skin to suck moisture from the air, making it even drier. Isn’t that right? Or does the spray itself have occlusive ingredients?
Hi,
Can you please talk about Hydroquinone? Thanks
That explains it nicely and also please don't aspirate liquids we'd miss you!
I really appreciate your videos. I think absent from this video is issues with potentially inhaling the product. Lung biochemistry is fragile and complicated. Many compounds that are safe to place on the skin or even eat are dangerous or unhealthy to inhale (e.g. vitamin E). Are these chemicals in concentrations high enough that could be problematic if inhaled? Is exhaling while applying the product sufficient? What about the product that misses your face and hangs in the air after? Do your lungs sufficiently expel these products via the cilia?
Hi there, Ms "Definitely Not Me," thanks for this video! Do you think these polymers/acrylates+SD alcohol are all right ingredients for regular use on people's delicate face skin? I do my best not to irritate my sensitive, very oily, very reactive skin, and I'm pretty picky about ingredients in my skincare. So I really try not to use fixing sprays, even when the humidity's 200% and it's 100+ degrees out. I might use it (ELF's original without the SD alcohol) 2-3x max per year for when I might have to speak in front of 200 people at some fabulous event; otherwise, people are just going to have to look at my oily skin & melted foundation without turning into stone or pillars of salt, whatever, lol! ;-P
I was really hoping you'd address the phthalates in the sprays. I think I have a sensitivity to them.
If money is non issue... what is your top 1/ best sunscreen from Australia? And top 1 from Europe.? I can accept a tie status but still need to know your absolute top choice. I so trust your input. Cheers.
I have a spreadsheet of short sunscreen reviews that I try to keep updated here: labmuffin.com/my-sunscreen-mini-review-spreadsheet/
Love the vid but how scientific is the the term 'moisturize' when it comes to these things.. what do you consider moisturization? :)
*Moisturizers* are really just supposed to seal moisture. So they should be somewhat occlusive (less penetrable by water).
*Hydraters (collect/attract moisture)* would be anything humectant based; glycerin, aloe, hyaluronic acid, etc.
Though, moisturizers do tend to already have humectants in them. The name is misleading- mislead me all the way until a couple yrs ago. The common idea is that a moisturizer "gives" our skin moisture, when in reality they "seal" in the moisture (water). I know you didn't ask me, but hope I could help anyway 🙂
I have a question. What’s better for acne prone skin? Setting spray or powder? 🤔
Hope you don't mind my jumping in -- I break out with acne when my sensitive skin is irritated, and I do kinda think that the SD alcohol + acrylates or polymers in setting sprays are too harsh to use on my skin repetitively. Even though I have very oily skin, I try to use powders to blot when my shiny skin gets to be too much, lol. I might use ELF's original setting spray (no alcohol but it still works for me) at special events, like maybe 1-3x a year when I have to speak in front of a room full of hot guys or something lol.
I think that some others think powders are the devil, like Dr Sam, who normally is usually sane, but that was one of her pet peeves a few years ago. She hasn't mentioned it in the past year or so, but she used to insist that powders caused breakouts. But it seems she now uses face powders herself in her videos, lol...
jcjccmz thanks for your reply! The thing is, that I use translucent powder now, but sometimes it looks really cakey and too powdery, even tho I try to use just a little. I’ve had an issue with acne for almost 10 years and my skin finally got better, so I really don’t want to ruin it with new product, because I know how long it’s gonna take for me to get rid of it again. But I really like that dewy, kinda glowy look, so that’s why I want to use spray instead of powder. But what If I’m gonna ruin my face again? 🤷🏻♀️
Petra Uhráková I would think mineral powder is best. But as someone that has had severe acne, none of it should break you out. Most acne isn’t caused by what you put on your skin if you’re cleansing/moisturizing/treating twice a day. Most of the time it is internal and hormonal.
Can I also use setting spray over sunscreen so it won't budge due to sweat? And is using it over sunscreen likely to reduce the protection factor to sunscreens?
I think it'll be a safer bet to use a water resistant sunscreen instead - it's hard to predict the interaction between two products.
what is the name of the concept of polymers forming a thin film that shields the makeup from getting smudged?
Are the Ingridients on hairspray really safe on skin?
Awesome as always 👍 Btw have you heard about Institut Esthederm Osmoclean deep pore cleanser? What is the science behind this kind of products? Does it really work?
Also, after your recent video about retinoids I decided to try it out. I am thinking about Sunday Riley's Luna sleeping oil but I don't want to quit Alpha H Liquid Gold and Glamglow's Good in Bed since I am addicted to my complexion saviour glycolic acid. Is it wise to use products with retinol and glycolic acid alternatively?
Hello! My question is in no way related to the video, sorry about that😅, but I remember I saw on your Instagram an ''i am full of chemicals'' pouch; has it been released already by any chance? Or have I missed it?
Argh I've been really busy and it slipped my mind! I might release it when I hit 100K Instagram followers - just so I'm forced to have a deadline :)
What polymer is the strongest?
I always spray my face before applying mascara, for the same reason. However, I also use a blow dryer on my face, to dry my lashes, because they don’t hold a curl when they’re wet 😂
Clever! I use a blow dryer on my body sometimes when it's cold and I can't get warm 😂
Lab Muffin Beauty Science Haha I do the same thing 😂
😂😂😂😂 That's scary. I don't put any heat near my eyeballs like that. The idea of heating up an eyelash curler and using it to curl my lashes scares me. I'm afraid of burning my eyelids even after letring the eyelash curler cool down.
Katelynn Lee Haha no no, I don’t heat up my eyelash curler lol. If I’m going to use a setting spray, I have to do it *before* mascara, or else it’ll run. So, after spraying, I’ll use a blow dryer on cool to just dry my lashes, before I go in with mascara.
