SpaceX Just Revealed NEW Upgrade Starship Super Heavy For Catching...
Despite the ongoing legal battles, Starship remains the busiest and most active spacecraft at Starbase. Notably, Super Heavy Booster 12 has undergone a series of continuous refinements, each aimed at ensuring a successful catch on its next launch.
So, let’s take a closer look at the advancements on Super Heavy Booster 12 to see how the company has been utilizing its time while waiting for the launch permit, in today’s episode of Alpha Tech!
Similarly to the relationship between Booster 7 and Booster 8, Booster 12 is considered an upgraded, refined version of Booster 11. This similarity goes beyond design and reflects SpaceX's step-by-step development strategy. The successful flight of Booster 11 provided the company with a wealth of valuable data on booster performance. Based on this information, SpaceX has implemented several improvements to the Super Heavy Booster.

The first new feature we must mention is the structural changes to the vehicle.
Six new struts have been added to both stabilization points of Booster 12, with three on each side of the socket where the stabilization arms lock onto the booster. Initially, it was speculated that this addition was to enhance the rigidity and stability of the structure. However, upon closer examination, they are actually new deceleration points, intricately designed for Starship, showcasing SpaceX’s groundbreaking thinking in optimizing the booster landing and recovery process.
During the landing phase, when Super Heavy is in a hover state, these new struts are expected to be the first point of contact with the "chopstick" system - robotic arms designed to catch and stabilize the rocket. Their special position allows for a gradual and controlled deceleration process, minimizing direct friction between the rocket body and the catch arms.
This improvement not only helps protect the surface of the Booster, extending its lifespan but also allows for more precise control during landing.

Additionally, SpaceX has rapidly installed a number of new buffer components on both tower arms, including 17 buffer segments. Unlike the old black pads, these look like ship steel with rubber inside and are resilient. These buffers will create resistance to slow down any remaining velocity and align the landing. The way the new buffers will act as brakes, I suspect, will also fill the gap between the tank and the newly installed landing struts on Booster 12.

The upgrade to Super Heavy’s struts for better stabilization during the catch process is a fascinating development. It’s impressive how SpaceX continues to learn from every launch!

if the FAA had its way we would be flying biplanes and driving model A's.... but look how safe......

    Still have to pinch myself.
Amazing times with advancements that seem straight out of the comic books for someone
who is old enough to have watched the first moon landing on a black and white TV over half a century ago.

Why doesn’t SpaceX use test hops to prove out the simulations and work out any unknowns? Simulations are never 100% accurate.

I had a similar idea about a year or two ago I published , but it rather used springs under the rail on each chopstix arm. I also published a cable catch method about the same time, and it would move the cables close to it, and would lift a series of connected weights vertically to reduce any potential impact.

Aren't the Starlink panels on the chines susceptible to ice chunks during launch?

    Interesting...
We'll see if they can land it on the hard points, without squeazing their tin can!
Hope they beef up internally a bit in that area too.
Would be a shame to have to cut an access hole to get in there and jack the dents out...
If nothing else, failure likely to make the modern version of a train wreck video.
Followed by a quip from Elon of course! 😂
Nice to hear proper nomenclature being used for Ship's parts,
I suspect Space will be a hybrid of Marine and Aircraft jargon, with some Space originals thrown in.
Nice seeing Elon in his Dark MAGA hat in the thumbnail...
He did the Country proud at the ralley with the Trump Monster.
Likely guaranteed the Space programs as a National Endeavour by getting so democratic.
The Right now loves Elon, Space funding, will be in the budget.
Basically at this point a game of Chicken with the Uniparty types.
    Should be fun to watch
what FAA does a month from now... will they try to continue being Little Bishes until the last minute possible, or sneak off tails between legs?
    Real America loves Elon!
And he gets it on the 2nd amendment...
Its the most powerful non nuclear deterrent in human history by the numbers at this point...
Hope it doesn't need application for Clown Removal Service...
Space related progress must go forward.
Elon is on the right side of history... You can see the tide coming in even in Europe.
Looking forward to the day that:
    "Space Racists"
are people into the new Space Race!
