Finally! ESA Forcing FAA To Approve Falcon 9 Launch Today for Big Mission...
The aerospace industry is in a quiet period, largely because the Falcon 9 has been grounded to allow the FAA to investigate a recent incident. Every time this happens, numerous operations are affected. Recently, the European Space Agency (ESA), an agency outside the U.S., urged the FAA to resume Falcon 9 operations.
The Falcon 9 is incredibly important.
So, what exactly happened? Will the FAA make an unexpected decision? How crucial is the Falcon 9?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Finally! ESA Forcing FAA To Approve Falcon 9 Launch Today for Big Mission...
As we know, during the recent Crew-9 mission, the Falcon 9 second stage experienced issues that forced it to land outside the planned area. Despite this, the mission's primary goal was still achieved, with the Dragon spacecraft and its two astronauts successfully reaching the ISS.
To ensure safety, SpaceX voluntarily paused Falcon 9 operations for inspection, a necessary step to maintain the rocket's reliability. However, what could have been a short delay turned into a longer one when the FAA intervened, initiating a mishap investigation and making the return to flight more challenging.
This has affected several upcoming missions, particularly those scheduled for early October. One of the most prominent is the launch of the Hera spacecraft for the European Space Agency (ESA), set for October 7.
Recognizing the potential delay, ESA has been intensifying its efforts to pressure the FAA. During a briefing on October 2, ESA officials confirmed they were finalizing preparations to have Hera ready for its scheduled launch on Falcon 9 at 10:52 EDT on October 7. Ian Carnelli, ESA’s project manager for the Hera mission, expressed optimism, saying, "We will be ready to launch. We are basically hoping we get [FAA approval] by Sunday [Oct. 6]."
Finally! ESA Forcing FAA To Approve Falcon 9 Launch Today for Big Mission...
Carnelli further noted that ESA is prepared to launch Hera as Falcon 9’s return-to-flight mission, rather than waiting for one or more Starlink launches. “We’re doing all we can. SpaceX is going to submit their report to the FAA by the end of the week, and at that point, we’ll be in the hands of the FAA. I hope we get the green light to move to the pad and launch on Monday.”
In addition, ESA has extended the launch window through October 27. Carnelli concluded, “The fact that we had a very strict launch window, I think, pushed every single supplier to do their best. It really was an amazing project, and I can only be extremely proud of what we have achieved together.”
In an announcement on its homepage on September 30, ESA shared a photo of the Hera team, along with a confirmation: "The photo was taken inside the North Integration Cell of the SpaceX Payload Processing Facility, located at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Just visible in the background, with red tags placed on its corner thrusters, Hera has now been filled with propellant and as a next step awaits encapsulation within its launcher fairing."
Despite the FAA delay, ESA is clearly determined to proceed on schedule, and there are key reasons why this mission is crucial for them.

It's also in corrupt companies like bowing.. they'd rather not improve while funneling money into dark projects for the state at the cost of taking "smaller" cuts..
This is mainly why there is no improvement, they get enough money to rework their entire fleet BUT that comes at a cost of not getting a fraction of that money into their own offshore banks..
Also Y the state funded rockets have failed recently, the military no longer has use for rocket engineering because the tech needed from it has already been unlocked.. so it's also used as a funnel.

One thing to always factor in with regard to government operations and decisions: the number one objective is always to maintain the bureaucracy. This, it is always necessary to "study the problem" more or by "gathering more data" or by "examining alternate approaches." In the case of the FAA, that bureaucracy can always assert "ensuring safety" as a reason for mandating delays, when the real reason is maintaining the bureaucracy.

      Consequences? Years of delays.
That's what we have now, SN8 was launched without permission and one of the full stack ones as well. Its unprecedented that a company launch without permission. Nobody else has ever done it before. The FAA don't trust Musk as far as they can throw him, with good reason.
Personally, I would put 90% of the 2 or so years we are behind schedule down to a Musk tantrum, the SN8 launch, and the current mess should result in much the same. Maybe longer.
However, the way out of all this is to fund the FAA properly and have Musk obey the rules for once. He needs to reset the relationship. Musk is too dim to get it right now, maybe after another couple of years he will.
I spent the best part of 2 years working on the A320 certification in the USA in the mid 90's. The FAA are a pain, but not so bad in reality. Treat them like idiots and they will bury you, as they have Musk.

summary of recent FAA actions in the space field
-1- say nothing about the obvious flaws of the Starliner
-2- be in "move along there's nothing to see" mode on the ULA launch problem
on the Space X side it's more like
"it's a shame but since the "accepted" stamp is not IN the box provided; the agreement is not valid; you will have to start the 6-month long procedure again"
and under the slightest pretext, even the most futile, the FAA imposes useless investigations
these actions seem to me more the mark of a primary school kid
[with a childish voice] "john he's better than paul! ; so if i annoy paul then john will give me candy" ....
not really the image that I had of a public institution formerly reputed to be serious.

You want airliners falling out the sky because the operators and manufacturers decided to save a few bucks or pay a dividend instead? You want rocket boosters falling on your local mall?
Check out the FAA free zone which is the Chinese space program dropping boosters on their citizens heads.
Think what happens when the genius Musk does this to Brownsville, just like he sand blasted South Padre Island.
Boca Chica was a truly terrible choice to locate Starbase and to try and conduct an iterative development program.
What resources did the FAA in South Texas have to oversee it? One man and his dog? How much did the Texas administration throw at beefing it up so it could handle the job ... a big fat zero.
Musk is bleating about the wrong people, he needs to bleat at the FAA's paymasters which is the State of Texas and its right wing, small Government, evangelists.
You want all this to move quicker? Give the FAA the budget to keep up and stop whingeing all the time.

Indeed this is a perfect opportunity to see if Spacex can build a partnership with ESA !
Both have so much to gain Spacex needs to wrestle out of the deathgrip of FAA initiated by the Democrats to kill Musk and at the same time ESA is hopelessly out dated and could use an infusion of technology by Spacex asap. Using the base in Guyana close to the equator is great May be in typical Musk style we can create a new company for launches of Falcon 9 in the US called Spacexit whilst all the innovative test launches / development are transferred to ESA in Guyana where FAA loses its role. ??

I worked with the FAA getting the Airbus A320 certified in the USA. I have some understanding of why Space X have dug a bloody big hole and jumped into it, all of their own accord.
Their problems with the FAA are 100% down to Musk's frustration and his response to his own frustration. He twice decided to do the unforgivable. He launched without an inspector present and without permission. He can bleat all he wants, but he failed to get two flights signed off and went ahead anyway.
Nobody, but nobody at the FAA trusts him or Space X because of it. He's also sand blasted South Padre Island so his protestations of being a responsible operator have worn very thin on top of that.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the A320 certified in the late 80’s or early 90’s in the US???? I’m not sure that is even relevant in today’s world.

The only problem with spaceflight is the FAA. They need to be removed from any authority over space as they are only proving they are not. Credible or trustworthy to handle the task
