- This is side 1 from the sixteenth of the series of Paxton Brass Band 10 inch LPs released during the 1960s. LPT1029 from 1968.
This is the final release in the Paxton LPT series. It’s a strange one to finish with, as the previous two had been recorded and released in stereo. However this one, is not only mono but is a re-release of a 1960 EP. The recording of Le Roi D’ys has reached Iconic Status, but I’m not sure if that was the case when this re-release was produced. My copy of this LP has quite poor surface noise, but I have included it to complete the series. If you want to listen to a better quality version, then I have uploaded the earlier 45 RPM release. This has the disadvantage of having to turn the record over halfway through, but the advantage is the fact that the record runs at 45 which is faster and has larger grooves. Some say this improves the dynamic range and detail available. This may be the case, even on a single pressed back in the early 60s. See what you think ?
.Black Dyke Mills Band won the National Championships of 1959 at the Royal Albert Hall playing Le Roi D’ys and this was recorded soon afterwards to be released in 1960. Maurice Murphy on Principal Cornet and Geoff Whitham on Solo Euphonium were outstanding, Geoff Whitham was simply awesome on the famous euphonium solo - like hearing a truly great tenor sing. Also Tommy Waterman, on Soprano Cornet. He lived with his parents in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, before being recruited up north to the Black Dyke Mills Band. The whole performance was beautifully controlled by Major George Willcocks.
The Photos used in this Video were kindly provided by John Clay, who had joined the Band a year earlier in 1958 at the age of 14 !
These LPs are fairly rare now and quite collectable. The whole series is now available here.
