Custer's 7th: Bloody Knife, The Indian Warrior Who Fought and Died for Custer

  • Bloody Knife was an enemy to his father's people, the Hunkpapa Sioux, and a friend to the U.S. Army and George Custer.
    Why?
    We pick up where we left off in Part I, just before the Black Hill's Expedition of 1874, and explore how that summer campaign paved the way to Custer's Last Stand...

      Or...not assigned two passive-aggressive, anti-custer officers as his battalions' commanders, thus giving his plan a chance for success. Also, thus not having to report to General Terry: "All the scouts were for attacking, but Bloody Knife said he had heap big doubts, so we decided to pass on disturbing the village until all the signs were favorable."
      Yep. That would have worked for the Army. 😊

    And asked what was it good for? In their experience of warfare on the plains, they could not envision a practical use for such a ridiculous weapon. This always struck me as being very funny. I wish I could remember the source.

    Me' tal-wlein [how are you] .. still a little slanted in Bloody Knife's favour over Gall .. in my opinion .. but a vast improvement over first part .. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by your mention of the episode involving Bloody Knife's 'Hunkpapa" nieces and sister who married a 'Hunkpapa" warrior .. and at least touching on Oglala and Cheyenne traditions that it was Gall .. who had the option .. that shot Bloody Knife instead of Reno .. also .. I thank you for a fair summary of Gall .. wela'lin [thank you] ..

      I came to this game rather late and had previously believed all the negative things people assume about Custer. But once I started to do some research-- wow! I realized how utterly wrong these assumptions are, and so this is my way to try to mend things the tiniest bit, or at least create discussions that show both sides of the equation here. Lots of gray areas, sure, but Custer does not deserve all the blame that gets heaped on his shoulders.

    Thanks so much, Siobhan, for your comprehensive and detailed videos on Bloody Knife. Since I have most of the old, published references, I especially appreciated your use of later researchers' material.
    Red Star's account of Custer's conversation at Crow's Nest has been overlooked by me; I find it thought-provoking, shedding perhaps fresh insight into the accepted claim/allegation/myth that Custer was rash, unreasonable, and driven by lust for power and glory to throw all caution to the wind. Red Star's account would seem to suggest the answer to that charge may well be, quoting Georgio Tsoukalos: "I think not!" 😊

      Whatever you may say of Custer--he was no coward. He wrongly assumed that the Sioux would run when attacked, so he divided his forces in an effort to prevent an escape. I highly doubt he made this decision due to an effort to achieve individual glory, but instead because he believed it was the best tactical move to defeat and/or round up the Sioux. He had no knowledge of Crook's unsuccessful, full scale battle with the Sioux at the Rosebud a week earlier. Nevertheless, Custer's decision likely sealed the fate of his command. If Benteen had come on when ordered, it is possible that some of the command may have been saved, but it is also possible that they too would have been entirely destroyed. It can be debated as to whether his decision was foolish--in retrospect it was certainly the wrong one. But, it's easy to Monday morning quarterback. Custer had achieved huge success in the past by audacious tactics, and it should come as no surprise that he acted consistently with his past at the Little Big Horn.

      I don't know, Steven, great question. We know that Bloody Knife was worried about this fight, but he was also a tenacious fighter. Would he have advised Reno to stay put in the timber a little longer? And would that have kept the 7th more intact (centralized in the valley with Benteen coming down to Reno while Custer continued to attack the village in flank and thereby surround it in more simultaneous fashion and force the warriors to fight on two fronts) rather than disintegrating (Reno fleeing to bluffs, staying there with Benteen, and all the warriors being able to turn on Custer).
      From what we know of Bloody Knife's behavior during skirmishes, it is hard to imagine him advising that the troops out to retreat in the way they did.
      But Reno might not have listened to him any way 🤔
      Sadly we will never know.

    I have enjoyed your accounts of the personalities and details related to the Custer campaign a great deal. Your background on the individuals not only humanizes them, but provides insight as to possible explanations for what happened on the battlefield. Your information on Bloody Knife was extremely interesting--Custer ignored the scouts' advice (including Mitch Bouyer--I read a book about him and you should do a segment on him) to his and his men's detriment. Unfortunately for Custer, Reno was neither a high quality man nor commander, and Benteen had little incentive to come to Custer's aid (and likely purposely did not--although that can be debated) and Reno's request for assistance gave Benteen the needed excuse. There seems little doubt that Benteen and Reno coordinated their stories prior to the inquiry after the battle, and both perjured themselves by testifying that they did not hear the volleys fired by Custer's men. Although Benteen saved the rest of the men through his actions on Reno Hill, he is far from exculpated for his failure to timely respond to Custer's order to "come quick." His dilatory response removed any hope that Custer and his men had of avoiding their fate.
    I knew most of the information you provided about Gall, who was a charismatic figure. I was surprised to learn, however, that he became a Christian and believed assimilation to be the best policy for his people. Thanks for your efforts.

    Thank you for uploading. I wonder if Bloody Knife's head is in somebodies private collection? This isn't facetious it's always fascinated me. Despite some of the scalps were left behind and pinned to trees others were taken home. I wonder were they all went. Imagine having William Cooke's moustache framed in the front room! That's something to talk about at a dinner party!

    • @SiobhanFallon7
      @SiobhanFallon7  2 месяца назад

      Ha! 😬
      There is an anecdote about a white man asking the Arikara scouts about Bloody Knife's scalp. The Arikara did not want it as it was one of their own, so this man (maybe an interpreter or scout with Gibbon ? The Arikara don't name him) asks if he can have it and bring it to his father, who was a friend of Bloody Knife's.
      So you are right. It very well be in someone's collection today.
      They supposedly knew it was Bloody Knife's scalp because of the gray streaks of hair.

Probably quite difficult to find information on him. Whatever you write about is good. You have such a pleasant voice and storytelling skills. I read Libbie Custer's book, "Tenting on the Plains". I know you must have too of course. Time to go watch another of your videos. I love them!

    It was supposed to be a simultaneous four prong attack like the Washita.

    • @31terikennedy
      @31terikennedy 3 месяца назад

      Actually the Indians were surprised. You left out Custer being notified that Indians had found a lost Army bread box which jeopardized the crucial element of surprise, this forced Custer to attack right away. It made no sense for Custer to order Reno to attack alone because that threw the crucial element of surprise away. It also didn't make any sense to send Benteen on a scout to the left because Custer knew where his point of attack was going to be, where the horse herd met the village. It was imperative to keep the Indians away from their horses. The Army would destroy the horses and the scouts would capture what they wanted. It was the Washita fight all over again.

    Families slaughtered, heads on poles, what a grisly blood enemy story! I have always wondered about the many scouts that accompanied the 7th and particularly the Arikara that went in with Reno. Their movements were sketchy to me. They seem to have acted as indepentent agents once the fighting started, which appears to be the standard native american fighting style, and were not expected to be in the ranks. I also had read that they went after the pony heard but wonder how that went since quickly a whole lot of Sioux were heading there too. But what always perplexed me most was the unusually large number of fatalities in Gall's immediate family. I wondered if Bloody Knife and/or other Arikaras specifically targeted them (which seemed unlikely because how would they know where they were, and it would mean penetrating into the village which the 7th were soon firing into) or... was Gall's family just in the wrong place at the wrong time caught exposed outside the camp. From your research the later seems more supported. My only question would be if the Arikara/Bloody Knife knew who they had caught in the open and pursued them specifically in an act of vengence. Would they have easily recognized Gall's wives? Would they have killed children without some specific vengence motive? Great study Siobhan! Love a serious, deep diving and honest historian.

    • @SiobhanFallon7
      @SiobhanFallon7  3 месяца назад +2

      Thank you! I don't think they deliberately targeted them because they were Gall's relations, but they did not distinguish between killing women/ children in the same way as whites.
      If I'm not mistaken, I think Crazy Horse's first kill was a woman.
