Air chisel dude. I got my floor pans from a Cherokee. Started by removing that brace above the floor pan. Drilled out the remaining spot welds, then cut my floor pans to fit, took some Aleve, cleaned off the rust, treated the floor with rust preventative, took some Aleve, welded everything back, used sand bags and free weights to hold everything down while standing on my head and contorting my back out of place, took some Aleve, sprayed etching primer, enamel paint on top and undercoating on the bottom... It was easy. Only took me about 12 hours to do, per side. Yeah, Aleve worked well for my back too.
Follow the rust up the drivers foot-well and I guarantee it stops at the clutch master cylinder. The single most common leak on these trucks. The fluid leaks down and rusts everything as well as destroys the fuse box that sits up under there too.
Reminds me of the great fun it was to replace the floor in my xj.. From the pedals to the back hatch.. My frame rails where very rotted as well though. I plated the entire frame with 1/8" .
Thanks you for this video now I know that I can drill a hole saw through the top of those rails to get a socket in there to fix some spun transfer case cross member nuts. Oh forget to mention mine is a 1988 Comanche
Am repairing a dodge d50 tray, rusted out along the bed side seams so has to all come apart. In the spots where I can't get a spot weld cutter I have used an electric finger file to grind out a notch. Has worked well
This looks like my 91 cherokee floorboards, I was thinking of using some square tube steel I had lying around for those channels that the seats sit in. Good work man
Ugh unibody life but got to start some where right , and when the time comes I got some good pointer to get the job done , keep at it matt and thanks for the tips like always
Crap I thought this was a new video... we’ll probably is for most viewers ... come on viewers if you are Patreon contributers you would get to see these videos and many others before anyone else...and no I am NOT compensated for saying that, just believe in supporting Matt.
lol, thats the only bad thing about seeing the videos weeks in advance... You might binge watch em all at once and then have to wait a while for a new batch! But it seems to work well for Netflix!
R S Wow that’s your response... your just another coward, uneducated person. Explain to everyone why you think I am gay... especially my wife of 28 years.
You have your work cut out for you. I'm working on a 55 Chevy truck and replacing rusted panels has become the norm. I'm interested in your progress so keep us informed. I like the direction so far!
I used the same pans to do the floor in my xj. Took a whole lot of persuading to get them to sit right on the rails. Be careful with that foam behind the pedals too. It caught fire real quick while I was cutting out the driver's side.
I replaced front to back floor pans on my 91 Cherokee. It sucked balls. But it was fun. BleepinJeep...Matt you should look into using Chassis Saver to prevent rust and then use Monstaliner to bed line the inside. The stuff is amazing. It comes from a company called Magnet Paints.
Easiest way of dealing with spot welds. Air hammer with chisel attachment, just separate the sandwiched pieces a bit away from the weld, put your chisel in there and go to work. Prices vary depending on the brand and quality, but you can find some for as low as $50.
I recently took out the carpet from my xj due to water leaks, and I was wondering what do you suggest to use on the floor in order to reduce or eliminate the heat from the engine?
One of my favorite varieties of incense to burn when I'm becoming one with my vehicle has got to be automotive paint. After 20 minutes or so the universe guides me out of the garage and into the downward dog position in the driveway to let me cough up all my bad chockras.
I put a 1x6 on the new floor pan, set a small floor jack on the 1x6, then stick a 2x4 between the roof and the jack to seat it against the frame. Doesn't take much pressure to do it.
When I replaced the floor pans in my cherokee I had the same problem where my pans didn’t touch the unibody frame. I made the same relief cuts but also made a u out of scrap and it went around the frame rail and I tacked the ends to the pan and drove a wedge between the u and the frame rail pulling the pan firmly down to the rail. I tacked the pan to the rail and broke the tacks holding the fit up u and repositioned it wherever it needed to be pulled down. Good luck. It’s time consuming and it’s a dirty nasty job.
BleepinJeep the unibody is spot welded, but I was referring to the sides where you can see the layers. So welding the floorpan to interior and underbody frame supports. Heard of people doing it for a little more rigidity, not Sure if it's worth it for you since you're going to cage it anyways. Just a thought.
The cherokee doesn't have the top piece of the unibody. When I replaced mine with 14g I was able to go over the bottom piece of the unibody structure and never had the top piece. If your plating the lower unibody than the floors by themselves will be sufficient.
I feel sorry to see that you do work with that kind of angle grinder. For that angle grinder guard is reason! I have friend who have only one eye. Guess reason for that. Yes he hasn't that guard...
BleepinJeep awesome man! That’s a cool idea. Bet the scorpion is cold in the winter. I love your videos, I’ve been subscribed for a couple years and have watched every one. Fallowed the scorpion and went back and watched a lot of oldies too
I repeat if your Jeep has a leak on the inside, pull your carpets. I regret not doing that years ago and now next week and I get to do the same thing, but not to the extent of this Comanche.
That cabs built on to the unibody, doesn't have to rely on it's own structure to hold it together like a cab on chassis. Should be ok without any bracing I would think.
Once you reach that 1000/month goal on patreon, could we have a subscriber meet and greet/trail ride with you at Rausch creek/Moab/Uwarrie? Any place is fine, distance don't matter to me, just wanna meet you in person and the other fellow subscribers and look at all the jeeps.
The floor pans I bought for my xj came with a channel for those unibody support rails, I realize its way too late for you but I found mine on Cherokeeforum.com and some guy was making them in his garage I can’t remember his username though
From what I see those replacement floor pans are crap! I would get Two sheets of Diamond Plate Steel and make my own tunnel and floor forthe entire cab. : - )
I have a Question to ANYONE who can give me any kind of answer, I am at a loss. I have a 96 Cherokee, it seems to idle just fine. But when I get on the Highway, ANY hills man does it loose power, It did not seem so BAD when I first got it back on the road, "a year ago" but now.. DAMN I can not figure this out! ANYONE?? Please let me know..
Not kidding, just today I solved this problem on my 96 ZJ. It would go around town ok but would not get up to speed on the highway, and revving past 3k made it lose power and I'd actually decelerate. On a whim I began whacking the cat with a hammer and watched chunks blow right out of it (there's no muffler on it at the moment). The sound came back and so did my power.
Thanks, it doe not have a cat but maybe there is a problem with the muffler, its not a stock one but maybe just maybe it has something clogging it. I will take it off and check it, thanks!

Black Hawk International Security does aleve go good with bourbon?
I dont know about everyone else but i actually enjoy the rain noise. Its soothing
Good job! Lotta work... GET AN EXHAUST FAN! lol. Smoky in there
Follow the rust up the drivers foot-well and I guarantee it stops at the clutch master cylinder. The single most common leak on these trucks. The fluid leaks down and rusts everything as well as destroys the fuse box that sits up under there too.
That is a lot of work, but awesome because I have never seen the unibody rail from that side. Very cool and helpful. Thanks Matt.
I'm glad my 4 Comanche's are all West cost originals!
I use a hardened steel chisel to pop spot welds. It's not super fast, but when you get the hang of it, it's cleaner, less damaging, and cathartic.
An air chisel works very well for separating spot welds! Thumbs up
MATT is always my favorite bleepin Jeep guy
good to see this as I have rust on passenger side. It looks more complicated then what I thought. Thanks for sharing.
Dang I was hoping you would find a treasure of 10mm sockets and wrenches inside the unibody! 😜
Jethro B I got some decent panel beating dolly's in the doors of an old toyota
I found a 10mm wrench on my way to work today.ha
Oh man! Good thinking matt with those 'relief cuts'! Gotta love the enthusiasm - dissecting a frog with a hammer!! Lol!!
Need a spot weld drill and an air chisel. Makes life so much easier for this kinda stuff
Thanks for doing the dirty work and pioneering to new fixes for our knowledge...and entertainment. Keep it up!
After watching you for so long I kept thinking you looked familiar, then I saw Diehard again. Hanz
I got excited when you started talking about how much you're going to do with this :)
Reminds me of the great fun it was to replace the floor in my xj.. From the pedals to the back hatch.. My frame rails where very rotted as well though. I plated the entire frame with 1/8" .
Makes me excited to tackle my floors in my new Cherokee project
Here in a few months on my mine, I'll be doing the exact same thing. Not looking forward to it, but nice to have a good inside peek at it.
If I watch this 30 more times I think I might try to rethink this on my $600 MJ.
Replace 600 with 750 and that’s me
Thanks you for this video now I know that I can drill a hole saw through the top of those rails to get a socket in there to fix some spun transfer case cross member nuts. Oh forget to mention mine is a 1988 Comanche
Air hammer with a chisel bit makes short work of popping those welds off the frame rail.
A chisel or air chisel worked well on the spot welds for me it cuts right through them
thats really nice of jeremy to let you make videos on his channel :)
Am repairing a dodge d50 tray, rusted out along the bed side seams so has to all come apart. In the spots where I can't get a spot weld cutter I have used an electric finger file to grind out a notch. Has worked well
Darn jeeps randomly starting on fire 😀 Damn I like watching your videos! Keep up the great content
Yess I found your channel..... I love your videos
*Awww crap....to be continued?! ahh! aint nobody got time to wait haha* 😜
You really like the word " unibody " !!
Your videos are awesome dude 🙏🙏
Quote of the day "Removing floorboards on a unibody is like dissecting a frog with a hammer" Keep up the good work matt
YES ANOTHER COMANCHE VIDEO! LOVING IT MAN! JEEP IT GOING!
Crap I thought this was a new video... we’ll probably is for most viewers ... come on viewers if you are Patreon contributers you would get to see these videos and many others before anyone else...and no I am NOT compensated for saying that, just believe in supporting Matt.

So do me a favor.. met me in person...
You have your work cut out for you. I'm working on a 55 Chevy truck and replacing rusted panels has become the norm. I'm interested in your progress so keep us informed. I like the direction so far!
Very helpful as always
Air chisel works great for removing the pan from the frame
I used the same pans to do the floor in my xj. Took a whole lot of persuading to get them to sit right on the rails. Be careful with that foam behind the pedals too. It caught fire real quick while I was cutting out the driver's side.
Thats exactly how I popped all of my spot welds on my Wagoneer! Hammer & a pry bar.
Now to find a competent welder...

I'm scared to pull the carpet back in my xj now😥 nice work tho!
Just bought a super rusty mj... Looks like fun!
Are you going to clean and add any rust prevention inside the framerails while you have the access?
Maybe so! Good idea.
Buy some chasis saver a review for us!
I recently took out the carpet from my xj due to water leaks, and I was wondering what do you suggest to use on the floor in order to reduce or eliminate the heat from the engine?
Seems like some good paint would be a great idea to help combat future rust. Assuming the Jeep lasts long enough in its next life TO rust.
One of my favorite varieties of incense to burn when I'm becoming one with my vehicle has got to be automotive paint. After 20 minutes or so the universe guides me out of the garage and into the downward dog position in the driveway to let me cough up all my bad chockras.
Your crazy Matt, love the videos, u my kinda crazy
I put a 1x6 on the new floor pan, set a small floor jack on the 1x6, then stick a 2x4 between the roof and the jack to seat it against the frame. Doesn't take much pressure to do it.

Does anyone know how necessary those "structural floor supports" are? If yes, where to find them?
Are those “structural supports” on the floor plan necessary? Mine are rotten out of existence
Thanks my 87 comanche has no rust nowhere on the body but the passenger side floor 🤣🤣
Where did you get the pans I need rear sections for my 88XJ
ebay or amazon, one of those
Ive heard welding the seems to unibody cars / trucks make them much stiffer. Any input on the subject? Could it help you gain some stiffness?
What seams?
BleepinJeep the unibody is spot welded, but I was referring to the sides where you can see the layers. So welding the floorpan to interior and underbody frame supports. Hey Matt meet me at the Pull-A-Part you go to sometime. I wanna show you my two door Cherokee.
I’m also from east TN and would love to meet you
Why didnt you cut the new floor pan instead of the support?
Where can I get floor pans for a 96 xj 2 door
Might be an idea to install a fire suppression system
Come up to Maine if you think that rust is bad.......I wish my daughters XJ was that good when we started !
I would just drive to arizona to buy a rust free car if it was any worse than this!
BleepinJeep
It was a long story..........
David Leighton my xj is brutal.. Canada kills cars.
I need to do my driver's side floor plan
wait is the comanchee unibody like a cherokee??
Peter Watson it's pretty similar
The cab is. Not the bed. But xj rails are 4 inches and mj 6 inches tall.
I feel sorry to see that you do work with that kind of angle grinder. For that angle grinder guard is reason! I have friend who have only one eye. Guess reason for that. Yes he hasn't that guard...
Are you putting an interior or exterior cage on that thing if so can't wait to see it!
Exo mostly
I’ve replace the floor boards and the cargo pan on my xj and I can say it is definitely not a fun job.
Fuuuuuuuckk that was fun to watch 👍
How do you find the will to do this?
Those mj floor pans are never stamped right.
Idk if i can make an innuendo from this title .............. But ill try. Youre gonna replace my floors? 😉
Floor pans or the worst i had to make some in my tracker lets just say my 1 day job turned into 3 days real fast haha
Thoughts on adding drain holes?
I'm gonna put carpet and have doors on this one... its gonna be plush for those winter rides!
BleepinJeep awesome man! That’s a cool idea. Bet the scorpion is cold in the winter. I love your videos, I’ve been subscribed for a couple years and have watched every one. Fallowed the scorpion and went back and watched a lot of oldies too
You ever come wheel at smorr?
I'd cut all that floor out , weld new body mounts and bolt it all on other jeep , welder and torch work 2 weekends worth of work
I repeat if your Jeep has a leak on the inside, pull your carpets. I regret not doing that years ago and now next week and I get to do the same thing, but not to the extent of this Comanche.
Do you have a video to install a gas pump gracias chingon
In Jeep Cherokee
yes
Have you braced any of that cab?
What do you mean?
BleepinJeep I'm no expert but maybe some 1x tube bracing inside the cab to keep it square while you cut some of the rotten structure out
That cabs built on to the unibody, doesn't have to rely on it's own structure to hold it together like a cab on chassis. Should be ok without any bracing I would think.
I think your next build should be an old Waggy. Here's a place to start. ...
www.montanaoverland.com
Save your leg. Put a boot on your hammer head. Lol
Can I have the hiLift hood mounts?
they come with the hood, hood comes with the tub, tub comes with the frame;)
Ok im trying to build some for wifes xj and cage mounts fot my toyota roll bar .
The floor pans I bought for my xj came with a channel for those unibody support rails, I realize its way too late for you but I found mine on Cherokeeforum.com and some guy was making them in his garage I can’t remember his username though
I'll give you my jeep to build
Time to shred her up.
XJ doesnt have those top rails . only MJ does .
I remember metal body of my CJ7 RUUUUUSTTTT 👍😡
Shop fan that blows out? Just a thought.
Mayonnaise a lot O rust in their....hehe looks like you've got your work cut out
i have a 87 & the same year pans for a cherokee fit way better then what u got. i think i got them from 4WD .com
Haha why am I using an angle grinder when I have a plasma cutter
Those pans are for a 2 door. Xj
they go in from the bottom
From what I see those replacement floor pans are crap! I would get Two sheets of Diamond Plate Steel and make my own tunnel and floor forthe entire cab. : - )
Wouldn’t it have been funny if you plasma cut through your flat bar
Command heap
What’s waist of a dream jeep but to each his own
Too much salt on the roads.
ANYONE?? Have you checked that your catalytic converter is not clogged?
Not kidding, just today I solved this problem on my 96 ZJ. It would go around town ok but would not get up to speed on the highway, and revving past 3k made it lose power and I'd actually decelerate. On a whim I began whacking the cat with a hammer and watched chunks blow right out of it (there's no muffler on it at the moment). The sound came back and so did my power.
Thanks for the reply, well it does not have a cat on it, however maybe the muffler we put on has some problems. I never thought about that! Thanks!
