The interesting thing to note about Toa Payoh is that it is actually the first HDB estate fully masterplanned by the HDB post-independence. The word Toa Payoh means "Big Swamp" which was what it used to be before development. The earliest villages here were a mix of farms / small factories and the place was known to be one of the more dangerous places to visit in Singapore back in the 60s (due to gangster activities etc). Key highlights are : 1) some of the earliest HDB blocks were built here (in fact, VIPs used to visit the place in the 70s including Queen Elizabeth) 2) the area where you had the Ban Mian actually served as the 'games village' for the SEAP games (kindda like the modern day SEA games) in 1973 ... some of the HDB blocks there were used as athlete hostels 3) Toa Payoh is home to the HDB HQ, so it would have been a great opportunity to talk about public housing in Singapore as well 4) Toa Payoh is home to the first Integrated Transport Hub and first air-conditioned bus interchange in Singapore. The kachang putih guy who used to sell in front of Peace Centre has a permanent shop there now :) 4) Key 'attractions' include the temples that you visited in your video, Toa Payoh park which was where many in the 60s / 70s took their wedding photos etc .. .... At a broader level, I suppose a place like Toa Payoh really personifies the Singapore story, especially from a public housing perspective. Love your videos!
Probably would need a 2 day excursion based on the recommendation! It's great to have Ghib to work with STB to have more Japanese tourists to come to Singapore
Another great episode of Singapore Hour ! Most foreign youtubers visit Singapore for 2-3 s days, go to the same few touristy places, eat the same few stalls recommended by other tourists and think they have "visited" the local part of Singapore. Very few channels actually go in-depth into the heartlands.
My wife and I used to live in Toa Payoh. It was one of the earliest HDB estates in SG. After I moved, I used to visit her in Toa Payoh and we went dating at Toa Payoh Park. Always enjoyed Japan Hour and now I have another "Hour" of enjoyment.
Apart from learning more about Toa Payoh, what I enjoy about this MV was Ayano's personality. She is such a bubbly person, and watching Ghib and her interacting with each other, as well as with the locals was really entertaining, and got me smiling thru out the video. Kudos to the camera person too for the great shots :)
Excellent episode of Toa Payoh. You have featured the best part of Toa Payoh. As a resident of Toa Payoh for 50 years, you have certainly shown the hidden gems of Toa Payoh. Bian Mian and goreng pisang at the Central and Lorong 8 Hawker Centre. There are still many great hawker centres located in Lorong 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7. Trees temple and Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery are our attractions as well as the Toa Payoh Garden, which used to be a lover garden. Next to the Toa Payoh Garden, there is a sports centre, which consists of a swimming complex, stadium and a sports hall. The swimming complex was built in 1973 for the SEAP games. Unfortunately, they are all fenced out for further development. In this episode, you mentioned you would like to show your viewers the interior of our HDB flats, studio, 2, 3, 4 and 5 room flats. Actually, there is a showroom at level 3 in the HDB hub which exhibit the different types of apartments. Well done. ❤
Hi Ghib, I don’t really comment on videos but I found myself enjoying your Singapore Hour series very much. Thank you for reminding me as a local the unique features of Singapore which are often overlooked in our day to day. Please continue to showcase different parts of Singapore 😊
Singapore Hour Episode 2 is another hit! High quality production this is. I was smiling while watching this video and Ayano-san has a positive attitude for being able to follow Ghib-san around knowing how hot the weather is. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
Singapore Tourism Promotion Board, please get Ghib to do promotion vid. He can really produce authentic stories on our Island! Great job Mr Ghib!!!! Thank you so much for the hard work!!!
Watching this episode reminds me of my schooldays, toa payoh isn’t my hometown but my best friends in school lived there, so for many many years, this was my hangout❤
Wow, keep it up. This is one of the best video so far. So educational, fun, and engaging. Good to have a co-host. So natural and real. Excellent to have a wife that is so supporting and helping at the back end. Cheers
Hehehe…i can feel the Japan hour narration style. 🎉🎉🎉 keep exploring. A busy Singaporean would appreciate the infotainment as they themselves would be surprised of their own island.
This video is very well cut, have the Japan hour feel. I have watched a lot of your videos and this stands out. Keep up the good work Ghib! Btw this is my first time commenting on a video coz I really enjoyed it.
Production values damn good, Ghib (and team)!! I'm sure someone will come along to commission you to do this "Singapore Hour" series on another platform soon! Something that you definitely deserve! 👍😊
Thank you so much for doing these episodes and yes Singapore is a small country but plenty of places to visits which tourists don’t know about. We always see the temple in Chinatown and it is busy so would love to visit the temple in Toa Payoh. Another to add on the bucket list👍
Love your "Singapore Hour" Shuang Lin Temple looks awesome! Next time can try the Japan Hour show where the hosts + guest travel from A to B via bus only
I specifically signed into RUclips just to make this comment! When someone recommended Shuang Lin Temple while you were in Toa Payoh Central, I was almost disappointed! But I felt that you would find the tree temple and yes you did! I remember playing around that tree. It used to be much much bigger with plenty of hidey places for kids. Really happy the first two if your "Singapore Hour" are towns I have lived in! Gjib Ojisan 頑張ります! May your videos all go viral!
I enjoyed your Singapore Hour. Now i know where to dig my ears n find the good food. I tot the camera lady was doing a steady job n your guest Ayano san is lovely too. Good job Ghib san!
There is also a abandoned japanese shrine in macritchie reservior nearby that was build by the japanese when they were occupying Singapore. The name of the place is called 'Syonan Jinja'. if you were to go to macritchie and go along the perimeter of the country club, you would find the remains of the bridge that used to connect the shrine, the old wooden bridge stilts are even still visible when the water level is low. Only problem is that the rest of the main shrine remains are currently in a protected area and its illegal to go in, unless maybe you can try to get Nparks to bring you in haha. Maybe you can make a video on that sometime :3
I wqtch 3 times. I fw to my folks and they love it. So much more spore heartlands can bring the tourists into. With town attractions and eatery, there are so much to explore in fun and safe singapore
Another heartwarming and interesting episode… it may be seemed normal to those living in the neighbourhood but there’s novelty with all the things you experienced there 👍🏻
This is so brilliantly produced. Ghib - well done on the concept and the editing. If you are ever in Petaling Jaya, do let me know. Happy to be your added tour guide other than Ai Chang :P
Enjoying the series, Ghib! Imagine it takes a lot of coordination and work in filming and editing, it's coming out great and I'm getting new insights into the country that I'll be curious to check out on my next visit someday. Your channel is entertaining and insightful, and makes me miss Singapore but I can live through your content in the meantime. Keep up the good work, to you and everyone involved! (and rest and recharge in between)
Hi Ghib n Ayano san n Lisa , nice info about Toapayoh the Tree small Temple Ci En Ge, i went there to pray today, n the Shuanlinshe i go every end of year n begining of the year,, wah must try the Pisang goreng and ban mian ,, nice episode of Singapore hour Ghib, 👍😬🙇
Ghib san! Come to the East on ep 3! Bedok / Tampines are good matured towns to be featured 😊 and +1 on consolidating your efforts on RUclips only. This the place you shine most and BEST! 頑張ろう!😊
I grew up in toa payoh, lived there for 20+ years. Tho I've moved out for a long time too but i still wish one day i can move back to this town. Too much memories here...
There’re also the hawker centres at Toa Payoh Lorong 1, 5 & Lorong 7 which locals flock to. Along Lorong 6 there is a very old block 47 surviving from the earliest HDB days when Toa Payoh was starting to develop.
Wahhhh the goreng pisanggggg! Looks so delicious! I always went to TPY when I was young but didn't know about the goreng pisang! Must try next time🤤🤤🤤! The monastery was indeed such a beauty! I always enjoyed watching your video! Part 2 golden hour was an awesome video! Keep up the good work Ghib buddy!!! One word to describe your video: Awesomeeeeeee!👍👍👍
Ah great enjoyment to watch your live video and videos to show everyone how great is Singapore like a gem, as many hidden places with lovely view and delicious foods. Thank You so nice video. 👍💐💐💙🤍
I lived in Toa Payoh for 5 years in the iconic long curved block (blk 157) opposite the Toa Payoh station. It's a great location. My dad used to take my 1 year old son then on Saturday mornings. They would take the train to Orchard just 3 stops away! There was a lot of good food and new interesting places would open up now and then!
👏👏👏 Love this! I flipped when you said "Uncle Panties" 😳...so scandalous. 😂I'm sure many Toa Payoh uncles would protest! Another thing...Ojisan....did you lose weight?
Nice episode. Some taste of Japan Hour. But most importantly, i getting to know my country all over again. Nice work, Ghib-san! And from an inside-outside perspective. Somehow I consider you an insider, but then also an outside perspective through ur guest. すごい!
My parents used to go dating at the park and also to the cinema at Toa Payoh. They also took their wedding photos at the park too. 😊Thank you Ghib for another amazing video!
Hey Ghib-san, I bumped into an ad showing your face, endorsing on a particular camera brand in Cathay Photo’s window display three days ago 👍😄 I love this series very much from beginning of this vid right till the end. Thanks for having guest Ayano-san in this episode, she’s kawaii ne. I like the part when she opposed to the common saying that visiting Singapore once is enough. Not just in Singapore per se, the popular attractions are just superficial. Every country has a deeper side of things waiting to be explored. Good job Ghib-san as well as the team behind. ❤❤❤
I found it amusing that you include some of the Japanese programmes vibes in your video editing😂❤

Wow Singapore Hour gets better with each episode. Ghib-san, your voice sounds like Japan Hour commentary - very good and authentic. Good on you.

These independent videos are promoting Singapore very well. Adding stakeholders might make it a different kettle of fish.
I rather he be independent so wont be constrained by requirements

It really does feel like watching the Singapore version of Japan Hour, especially the summary at the end of each segment.

I live in toa payoh since I was born. Thanks for featuring my familiar neighbourhood and favourite places! (:

Great episode! as someone who grew up in the area, would say you have most of the good points down. You missed out Soon Heng Rojak though.

Did you try to make the typical Japanese presenter/host voice from Japan Hour HAHA. Good Job and Effort!
It is supposed to be an hour but it ended in 35mins. We can’t have enough of it!
I truly enjoy this video. Thumbs up.
Nice to see my Hometown getting recognition.
I hope future singapore hour feature big towns like bedok, tampines, jurong and north region yishin sembawang woodlands areas. Thanks
Wow the temple divination seems on point. Impressive.
👏👏👏 Love this! I flipped when you said "Uncle Panties" 😳...so scandalous. 😂I'm sure many Toa Payoh uncles would protest! Another thing...Ojisan....did you lose weight?
Amazing Singapore hour is back again 🎉🎉🎉

Hello dear friends how are you?
You are really a good host for Singapore Hour...Kudos
Simon Road hokkien mee is one my favourites! Although the Toa Payoh branch is not their main stall, it should be good as well
Very nice, very authentic introduction of 大芭窑Toa Payoh. The good food, the beautiful temple tours, the house visit. Good job !
Hey Ghib-san, I bumped into an ad showing your face, endorsing on a particular camera brand in Cathay Photo’s window display three days ago 👍😄 I love this series very much from beginning of this vid right till the end. Correction for my bad typo. Shd read as “Visiting Singapore once is NOT enough”.
