    Ugh. I haven’t been to Rhinebeck in years. Honestly, it has been “too much” for a long time. Too much money, too much matching sweaters, too much people, etc. Just too damn much. Then they tack on all these other events, that it is just so out of control. Wool and Folk sounds like pure hell. I have been going to smaller festivals like MD Sheep and Wool, etc. Places where I can get into a booth and actually enjoy the yarn. Places that I don’t have to wait an hour in line to pee. Places I can drive to and from without having to stay over. This Saturday, I will be in Frederick, MD (home to Magpie’s Fibers) at a fiber festival. It’s 30 minutes away, free and will be 82 and sunny. Drama-free. I will check out the W&F vendor list and see if I can support any while I am there. I am sorry for everyone’s financial loss and ruined trips. I was home knitting by a cozy fire and drinking wine- just like I like to be.

      Agreed. I'm in New England and just stick to the region. Come to our neck of the woods sometime! The New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival (New Hampshire) and Fiber Festival of New England (Massachusetts) are just right. The Deerfield Fair is decent, too, although it isn't strictly fiber.

Thank you for posting the vendor list. I will definitely place orders to support these lovely indie dyers. Wouldn’t it have been nice if the organizer posted the list!!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. I think it perfectly sums up what it was like to attend this event. I left much earlier than planned and was so exhausted I barely made it to my evening plans and really had to rally for the next day. But my heart breaks for the vendors. There were vendors I wanted to see but literally couldn't find and after a few loops I was tired of trying to get through crowds. I did have a chance to speak with you and it was a moment of joy in the sea of chaos.

    I’ve been hearing all the horror stories about Wool and Folk. It was until seeing your video that I knew who the show organizer was. Hearing who it is doesn’t surprise me at all…I ordered a skein of yarn from her yarn shop (on the phone speaking to her) several years ago and she took my money knowing she didn’t have any skeins left of the special “one of a kind” colorway that the dyer was not doing more than one run of…took me 5 months to finally get that one skein! The dyer had to dye more due to that shop owner taking more orders (and peoples money) than there were number of skeins available. Other podcasters were saying she sold way more tickets to people than there was room for.

    So important to speak up! I have never been to Rhinebeck and still don't fully know what is going on in the different locations. However I watch a lot of knitting podcasters and so many have been talking very excitedly about Wool & Folk. Some of them mentioning that they were only planning to head to Wool & Folk and not Rhinebeck as all their favourite vendors were going to be there. This could have been a hugely successful and amazing event if planned properly (even in bad weather). It doesn't sound like the organizer has responded at all so far and thats extremely disappointing. Who is going to go back there as a vendor???

      Thankfully Rhinebeck is not the same as Wool and Folk. We attended Indie Untangled, which was fabulous, and Rhinebeck aka New York Sheep and Wool Festival, which was also fabulous. Wool and Folk was a huge example of an organizer’s breach of contract. Hopefully a lawsuit will come of this. On a side note, the sponsors are not responsible for the obvious cluster that the organizer created.

    I think the rain was the major downer. I’ve never been to a festival but I’m curious how “Wool & Folk was so great last year, so few people, so fun” isn’t going to translate to enormous crowds? Of course tons of people will go. And they changed the venue ahead of time, which is bad, but then you want them to change the venue a week in advance also? That’s a confusing take. Upstate NY sucks for driving (only been there once, never again) so I can totally understand a half hour drive being awful.

    • @theknittingpt
      @theknittingpt  10 месяцев назад

      Sorry, I’m not sure where you got the impression that someone wanted them to change the venue a week ahead? If you’re referring to the weather, they had time in advance to prepare for poor weather, which they did not. I heard after that vendors went out and bought more tarps because the tents did have sides on them.

    Probably going to bring the world down on me for this comment but here goes . Been going to NYS&W and Maryland Sheep and Wool since 2008 .
    My gang wanted to go to indie dyer events and I am a “tag along” kind of person so we went to one in a Holiday In in Kingston and one in a Church basement.
    I don’t know if or what I paid to get in . If the girls collect, I just hand over my money … I’m along for A GOOD TIME !
    I thought the one at the holiday inn and the basement was ridiculously crowded and did not enjoy .
    The two I went to outdoors were more comfortable but again didn’t seem like “all that and a bag of chips “ . Not the rich experience of the festivals on the fairgrounds. But again … I’m along for the fun in general .
    Then two years ago we went to something in the rain called Yarn Centric and when I got back in the car two members were talking about $20 .
    I asked “ did I pay $20 for that ?”
    And then I started taking an interest . I felt strongly that the events the day before were taking away from the original intent of the sheep and wool festivals at the fair grounds.
    So this year when the girls were talking about the three events I said “ I will go along with whatever is decided … but I think these events are taking away from the festival at the fairgrounds and prefer to boycott them “.
    One of the other girls pointed out there are more and more empty booths at the fairgrounds.
    When we started going in 2008 there were no open booths and we would see vendors share booths or share tents .
    I feel like the festivals at the fair grounds are to benefit the “sheep farmers” and 4 H and boyscouts the local community,,,etc etc .
    When we used to go in the old days some of the vendors were shepherds and would say they were fascinated with how we would scoop up the roving and even ask us “ what are you going to do with this stuff ?” 😂😂😂 that is how “genuine “ the festival was .
    The pop ups around the festival seem to be predominately hand dyed merino blends .
    I am guessing that the yarn bases don’t come from the local farms that the festival was set up for ?
    I am of the opinion that the original festival is run usually by volunteers and runs like a well oiled machine .
    We need to support the festival at the fairgrounds because THAT is what keeps those fairgrounds ( aka venues ) THERE for us .
    It’s difficult to keep the midway going with the food vendors , keep the buildings safe and operational, keep the security employees so they are there for us, keep the first aid team available. And if the employees there ARE paid it helps the locals .
    It’s like keeping an “industrial base “ alive ,,,like the mills in USA .
    When I saw the crowds at cakepalooza last year at $20 pp I wondered where all that money went since it was in a parking lot and we parked on a neighborhood street and I had to go into someone’s home to use the bathroom ( which felt very awkward ) and I’m sure the tents belonged to the vendors .
    I saw “for profit “ private enterprising …. NOT the same situation as the festival at the fairgrounds.
    I would NEVER EVER “pay” $35 -$50 to “shop”.
    The $13.50 for the fairgrounds is a bargain .
    I don’t pay to shop … I pay for the experience of the fairgrounds and the local flavor .
    I’m not very good at explaining this I think unfortunately.
    I think the yarn vendors should set up in the fairgrounds ( maybe share a booth if need be ) instead of the pop ups outside of the original festival .
    Now , my husband explained that the additional events of Thursday and Friday make the entire “weekend “ an “experience “ that folks come for …
    Maybe that is so.🤷‍♀️.
    But I’m rather old fashioned and want to support American wool farmers , woolen mills , local wool crafters , and the fairgrounds to include 4H etc .
    How much hand dyed merino can the market bear ? And we’re do those merino bases come from -
    Again , I think the vendors should be renting booths or space for their tents at the fairgrounds .
    No one … no individual… no pair of individuals… with no matter how many sponsors
    Will be able to run an event like the one on the fairgrounds…
    That requires “teams” of hard working DEDICATED individuals ( like the hard working😍 ladies that keep the ladies room moving along !)
    THESE are the people that deserve our continued support .

    • @theknittingpt
      @theknittingpt  10 месяцев назад

      From my understanding, these other events popped up bc the NY sheep and wool event have very limited spots available for new vendors.

    • @jetv1471
      @jetv1471 10 месяцев назад

      @@theknittingpt actually there have been many empty booths the past few years … I’ve been going every year since 2008 .
      Vendors struggled to get booths back before the pop up events started.
      So the fairgrounds accommodated by allowing outdoor tents … and some vendors shared booths .
      As the pop up events grew ,,, we see more and more empty booths and tent spaces .

      @@herlastvoyage Sorry, but women are much more catty than men. They start problems for no reason at all, are filled with nonsense drama and many of them talk behind each other's backs. That is why I prefer men friends over women. Good for you if you have found those rare cool women friends.
