  • A longline is my most important piece of dog training equipment. In this video I go over exactly what a longline is, how to make one, and the most important fundamental principles you need to get right when using one.

    Hey Paul I’m in 3rd week on the blueprint. Longline training didn’t cover the slack part, this is great advice and the link I was missing. I think you should add this to the blueprint. Just call helpful tips for longline training. I’ve been reeling my dog in for a week because she keeps long line tight. This is a big help

    Hi Paul! I just recently stumbled upon your channel after doing a search about working a dog on a longline. I've since subscribed to your channel and I've been really enjoying your method of dog training. I have a question about the longline and I hope you can give me some insight on what I need to know. I made my longline last night and put it on my dog. I wanted to let him get used to dragging it around the house before we head outside for more training in the backyard. My question is this, how do you get the line to stay up around the dog's neck? As my dog was moving about, the loop around his neck kept getting bigger and bigger, so much so that after a few minutes the loop was down around the front of his chest. I'm coming off of using a prong collar and it just seems like when the dog gets a correction it will be too low to do any good with the longline. Am I correct in just using the longline without another collar? I'd appreciate any feedback you could give me, if you have some time. Thanks!

      Hi Angela, I've just seen this. We have a video on this in our new series. The Paumiko Dog Guide. buypaumikonz.com/product I'll try to make a video and put it up here. THere's a real easy fix! P.S. Replying a year late is better than never replying right? haha

    Hi Paul, im just starting to use the blue print (buying it soon)
    Would a bowline knot do the same with 550lb paracord ?
    It will still give a check nicely but wont tighten, is that ok or does it need the full tighten to get his attention ?
    Thank you

    Great video. I'm following the blue print with my GWP. She's stopping nicely, but has picked up a habit of simply standing still rather than sitting when I give the stop command. Should I be insisting on a sit every time?

      Hi Mark, I really like a sitting stay, and so do a lot of other trainers, however some very good trainers and training systems train a standing stay, and they can get a very good standing stay. So it is personal preference. You don't need your dog sitting for it to stay still, but it's a good visual for you (you know if your dog sits, it isn't going to move) and it is a good anchored position for the dog as well. Sitting is one more step away from walking than it would be if it was standing. (it has to stand up and then walk) This gives you more time to step in and correct the dog before it takes it's first step when you are training. I believe a sitting stay does have it's advantages.

    Is this not dangerous, putting a noose round a dogs neck?
    What if the dog picks up speed and the noose tightens.
    Surely attaching it to a harness would be safer.

      It isn't a noose. Its only dangerous if it doesn't loosen again. This isn't on the dog unsupervised. A harness encourages pulling unless you use a no pull harness which aren't great to always use in my opinion, because as soon as you don't have that harness, you don't have control of the dog. A harness is fine for nice walkers and great for car rides, but not really great for training.

      Well you don’t have a clue do you! This is a slip knot. It only tightens when pressure is applied. When there’s no pressure it’s loose. And a harness would have ZERO effect on training the dog, all it’s doing is stopping the dog from running away, it doesn’t make the dog uncomfortable whatsoever. The whole point of the longline is to make it uncomfortable for the dog so it stops what it’s doing. Sure don’t use a longline, but when you end up with a dog with terrible recall and doing all sorts of bad things, it’ll end up being on a lead for the rest of its life with zero trust. You be the judge if 1 year on a longline or the whole dogs life on a lead is the better option

    With my dog a thin line like that would get my finger ripped off sooner or later even with gloves. My dog pulls as hard as she physically can and is 30kilos

    Isn't a Martingale collar less likely to injure the dog?

    • @brittdawgggarfarf1882
      @brittdawgggarfarf1882 4 года назад

      I would only use a harness with the long line to prevent injuries

    • @brittdawgggarfarf1882
      @brittdawgggarfarf1882 4 года назад

      Also they make longer nylon leashes which are safer than a little cord

      Add a harness and all of a sudden the dog doesn't care.
