So, I wanted to import a Stewmac Guitar Makers Repair Vise which retails at £125.00 [GBP], a fair price. But after finding out shipping was over £80.00 + I would have to pay some import tax / duty + 20% VAT etc, it would have cost closer to £250.00...
So, I messaged Stewmac and asked if they had a European distribution facility so I could save on postage. They replied saying "Sorry you have decided to buy elsewhere but thank you for contacting us! See, they never even answered my question (which annoyed me)...
So, I went searching the forums and came across this 'Patternmaker's Vice!' Odd I thought; this looks exactly like Stewmac's Guitar Repair Vise (it is a direct copy by the looks of it). Anyway, I found a link to a site in Germany and checked it out. Price including delivery was £117.00 [GBP] and as it is in the EU, there is no import tax / duty or VAT.
So, I ordered one and here is the link; www.dictum.com...
If you are looking for an alternative to the Stewmac vice in the EU, this it it!
I just purchased the StewMac version...I'm in the states. Box is nearly identical! Nice Video, Thanks!
These are not StewMac copies, but instead copied from an old german company called Ulmia
many, many thanks for the tip! I'd been eyeing the Stewmac vice for a little while and was just about to pull the trigger on it (even at $180 + $70 shipping - and then a customs hit on top of that) when I stalled just long enough to look on here to see what review / user videos said about it (so far I'd only seen Stewmac's own video). I've bought quite a lot of other gear from Dictum before so I was intrigued when I saw your title as I know for a fact they sell top quality gear (hadn't seen this there though). I've now ordered this vice from them for just €133 incl. delivery. Literally half price for exactly the same piece of kit. Couldn't be more delighted! Have a sub as thanks!
Thanks! I owe you a beer. Greetings from México
I just bought one from Carbatec here in Australia for Au$179 with free delivery. All the best.
Probably comes from the same factory as the Stewmac. In the States we call this a Gunstock vice, cuz Murica. Good vice, thinking of getting one along with an Emmeret style pattern makers vice which is crazy useful.
Available at Lee Valley as a Universal vice
A little tirck Idid with mine is put some heavy rubber bands under the jaws an case the neck slips it wont get nicked
Brilliant! Just ordered one! Can't wait. Cheers
Good move buddy :)
You sir are an absolute star!
$129.99 From Grizzly tools here in the US. Gunsmiths have used this vice for ages! I actually bought one for $99.99 US from Woodworkers Supply but they stopped selling them.
Hiya Vic. Hey I've been in the same boat for ages. Keep looking at the StewMac one but what with the shipping and VAT etc etc. plus the crap exchange rate each time I back out of it !! I've seen a couple of other bods with green ones and just thought they were just a StewMac colour variation. Glad I was wrong ... haha . Thank you SOOOO much for putting this info up on here. I am going to nab one of these right now !!!! Cheers - Glen
I use mine almost daily :)
It's absolutely brilliant
It certainly is; I use mine daily :)
You should put the link for the work bench as well it's a very nice one?????
I bought the workbench on eBay many years ago. I do not wknow who I bought it from...
Awesome find! I want the Stewmac vice too, but have been put off by the expensive shipping.
I got mine from Dictum in Germany. No import tax to the UK. Cost me £117 delivered. Regards, Victor...
Here you go; www.dictum.com/en/tools/woodworking-metalworking/workshop-accessories-toolkits/accessories-and-clamping-devices/705755/patternmaker-s-vice It says Pattermakers Vice but it will say Guitar Repair Vice on the box you receive :)
I'm not personally into tattoos, but the one on your left forearm is really cool!
Many thanks for the video and I've bought one from AliExpress.
Thank you, Sir, for that video. It saves me quite a bit of money. About € 100.
It's a great vice! I use mine a lot :)
HA! Brilliant labeling on someone's part! Subbed.
Thanks for subbing buddy. I subbed you a while back :)
Cheers!
