Fixing a Fostex R8 that would not play and spool correctly; but a problem remains

  • Today I am fixing another Fostex R8 where the plastic capstan wheel was slipping, and the spooling motor wheels did the same. This is a common problem with these decks.
Fortunately, John from www.tascamninj... makes aluminium replacements. Replaced the belt also. Now, the deck plays and spools perfectly.
But unfortunately, a problem remains: the arm on which the right tension roller is mounted, has got a fair amount of play, causing the roller to guide the tape in a skewed position. It is not a show stopper, but it is certainly not ideal for the tape path.
My website with a lot of other information: www.reeltoreel...

    Hello Sir,
I wanted to thank you for your work of archival on your website which helped me to find documentation on a calibration tape I found which is the AGFA Bezugsband 9,5 DIN 45513.
I didn't have any papers in the box as you did!
I was really surprised to see someone having this old of a tape with the exact same sitckers I have too :)
I was wondering wether I could use this today as I don't have any 3.5ips calibration tape but I have no idea what the reference magnetic flux is nor the equalization but I assume this would be IEC (CCIR) since it was made in germany?
    Cheers from France,
    Martin

      Hello Martin,
Glad to be of service! The AGFA tape is 250 nWb/m reference fluxivity and it definitely is IEC.
I have a large collection of (old) calibration tapes.
